DETAILED ITINERARY

ADDIS ABABA

Day 1 ‐ Arrive in Addis Ababa. Transfer to Saro‐Maria Hotel, an attractive four star hotel in the center of Addis.

Today we will have full day sightseeing tour of the capital which includes the Ethnological Museum in the former

palace of King Hailesillassie, the National (Archaeological) Museum, the superb Holy Trinity Cathedral, the various

historical monuments of Addis Ababa; and Merkato largest opeŶ‐air market in Africa.

AWASH

Day 2 – Mid day drive to Awash park. In the park we see the elegant Beisa Oryx grazing on the

savannah plains. Also Soemmering’s gazelle, Dikdiks, greater and lesser Kudu and Waterbuck can

be observed. The park is well known for its 460 bird species from which 6 are endemic. Also the

–especially after rain time – impressive waterfalls and gorge of the Awash river in the park are

worth a visit. In Awash NP you sleep in the Awash falls lodge which is built in local style and

Day 3 Drive through the Rift valley system and along the way visit the beautiful Afar

people and their villages, Camel Caravan along the way to Semera. Semera is an

overgrown Afar ’ s people settlement, and also served as the administrative capital

AFDERA

Day 4 ‐ Drive to Afdera, visit the salt lake and the salines and excursion to the working

area at the salines. Lake Afdera, a highly saline body of water and lies at an altitude

of 103 meters below sea level and listed as the lowest lying in the world. Here you

will visit the salt extraction of the Afar people from the lake.

ERTA ALE

Day 5‐ Drive to Erta’ale here where we arrange the camel to ascend our logistics and for

those who wish to ride, Local militia and guide apart from those who already with us.

Late afternoon start walking to Erta ‘eale and climb to Erta Ale volcano and stay

overnight on the top of the mountain. Erta Ale is 613 meters tall, with a lava lake at the

ERTAALE‐ HAMMED ELA

Day 6‐ Half a day visit of the Erta Ale Lava Lake throughout the day witnessing

different Lava activities from varies intrusions. Get acquainted with the smoke and the

changing environment around the rim of the Lava Lake. Afternoon drive to Hamed Ela

and explore the different sites of Dallol region that includes the geysers and fissures of

the Potash, Salt and Sulfur solutions coming out continuously and actively. Also the

salt Deposit and doom is among the attraction with its age dating Camel caravan from

Dallol to Mekele

DALLOL

Day 7‐ After breakfast visit the salty Lake and visit the salt workers and the merchant,

then head to Dallol/Denakil Depression, which straddles the Eritrean border to the

east of the Tigraian Highlands and is officially listed as the hottest and active place on

the earth surface with an average temperature of 40 ‐ 45 degrees Celsius. Most of

this vast and unpopulated region lies below sea level at 116 Meters.




GERHALTA

Day 8‐ Drive to Gerhalta through the town of Berhale. Ascend to the Tigrian highland with

the camel caravan and stop for photo over the depression.

Day 9 ‐ Early in the morning visit Abreha Atsbeha church in Wukro and continue driving to Axum

Day 10 ‐ Full day in Axum, a holy city of Ethiopia, dating back over 2000 years and the

cradle of Ethiopian civilization with the Axumite Kingdom, tour of Axum that includes:

Axum stele or obelisks; the largest single pieces of stone standing anywhere on the

world (World Heritage Site by UNESCO), castles of former monarchs, the Axum Museum

and Mariam tsion Church, built on the site of Ethiopia's first church AD, and palace of

Sheba and the Gundit stelae field, King Ezana’s inscriptions and the tombs of Kings Kaleb

and Gebre Meskel.

Day 12 ‐ Early in the Morning trek to Chenek, we start our walk from Sankaber through

the path that leads us to the river. Our destination tonight is Chenek, which is situated at

an altitude of 3600 meters, and located at the Southern point of the Mesheha Wenz River.

GONDAR

Day 13 ‐ Early Morning drive to Gondar ‐ Gondar was the first capital city of the Ethiopian

empire, which began in 1632 with the reign of King Fasilledes. In Gondar there are dozens

of castles built by various emperors over the course of 236 years.

Gondar visit includes the palaces, residences and open air baths of King Fasilledes; (World

Heritage Site by UNESCO), the monasteries of Qusquom, the church of Debre Berhan

Sellassie (Light of the Trinity) with its 16th century paintings and frescoes, which is

located at the summit of a hill and surrounded by fortified walls.

BAHIRDAR

Day 14‐ Drive to Bahirdar through the farmland of Gojjam region. After check in the hotel we

drive to Bezawit Hill to have a panoramic view of the town of Bahir Dar, visit the place of

emperor Haile Silassie and the colorful market of Bahirdar

BAHIRDAR‐ LAKE TANA

Day 15 ‐ In the morning drive 32 km southwest of Bahir Dar to the small town of Tiss Abay to visit

the Blue Nile Falls. We will walk some distances to the Falls and visit some of the villages around

there. In the afternoon we will have a boat excursion in Ethiopia’s largest water body, Lake Tana

(3,600 sq km) to visit the monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret and Azwa Mariam which are found on

the largest peninsula of the lake.

These monasteries are known for the colorful frescoes of religious scenes, different ancient types

of crosses, paintings, murals and an impressive display of illuminated Bibles written in Ge’ez,

Ethiopia’s oldest language.

LALIBELA

Day 16 ‐ Drive to Lalibella to tour the famous eleven rock‐ hewn churches of 12th

century. The city contains 11 monolithic churches that were built in the 12th century

and are carved out of the pink granite rock; they have been classified as a UNESCO

World Heritage Site. Each church (Bet) has a unique architectural style; all are superbly

carved and most of them are decorated with well‐preserved paintings.

LALIBELA

Day 17 ‐ Full day in Lalibella to tour the eleven rock‐ hewn churches of 12th century.

The city contains 11 monolithic churches that were built in the 12th century and are

carved out of the pink granite rock; they have been classified as a UNESCO World

Heritage Site. We spend the rest of the day visiting fascinating churches within the town

and countryside; some are made from the rock and dating back to around the twelfth

century. We visit the first group and second of monolithic churches.
