It covers topics including: the formation, evolution and stereotypes of "China"; the characteristics and connotation of ancient Chinese civilization; the position and role of Chinese civilization in the global landscape,etc. Course Goals: On successful completion of this subject, students will gain general picture of Chinese history, will have the knowledge of Chinese Civilization and understand more on Chinese classical products. Required Texts: Patricia Buckley Ebrey, The Cambridge Illustrated History of China, Cambridge University Press,2010 Endymion Wilkinson, Chinese History: A New Manual, Harvard University Asia Center, 2013 Prerequisites: Chinese reading capacity; Interests in Chinese history Instructor’s Academic Background: Zhiqiang Duan is the associate professor of the National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University. His research field is the history of culture and thought in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Course Description: The course introduce the history of Chinese civilization.
