Official Language English is the official medium of instruction at HIMalthough the language of the region is French. Faculty All lecturers are well qualified and experienced in boththe field they are teaching and in delivering educationto international students. All lecturers participate

frequently in staff development programmes. Many ofthe HIM lecturers have worked for numerous years in ourinstitution. Study Mentor In year one, students have the option to request a studymentor, usually a third year or BBA student, to helpovercome any initial study difficulties. 

English Foundation Programmes For students whose level of English is below the indicatedentry requirement, we recommend the partially sponsoredSEG English Preparatory Programme offered in the SEGlanguage centre in Leysin. Duration is 4 to 16 weeks. Pleaserefer to the price-list for details. Teaching Material HIM uses up-to-date teaching materials to ensure that thecontent of every programme is "State-of-the-Art". Transfer Agreements HIM has transfer agreements with Cornell University,University of South Carolina, University of Nevada, FloridaInternational University and Johnson & Wales, amongothers.

Internships Years 1 and 2 of the main programme and the post-graduate programmes include a 4 - 6 month paidinternship either in Switzerland or overseas. Internshipsoffer a unique opportunity to enhance both the acquiredpractical and language skills as students will normally dotheir internship either in the French or German speakingpart of Switzerland. These skills are highly sought after inthe hospitality industry. Internship Office The HIM Internship Office assists students in findingemployment in a hotel or restaurant in Switzerland. TheHIM Internship Officer will visit the students on internship

and is always available for any assistance required duringthe placement. 

Salary By law, Swiss employers are required to remuneratestudents at prevailing industry trainee rates. Gross salaryper month: CHF 2075.- to CHF 2450.-. Deductions forfood, accommodation, tax and insurance are about CHF1000.-. Internship Overseas Students have the opportunity to complete their internshipoverseas. The Internship Office offers assistance in theseplacements.

Programme Focus The programme develops hospitality and managementskills. Hospitality skills are taught in a traditional, yetdynamic Swiss manner providing you with expertisein food and beverage service, front office operations,housekeeping and rooms division. As HIM graduatesare prepared for top-end management positions, theprogramme does not include food production (kitchen) or

housekeeping practical sessions. However these subjectsare addressed in theoretical classes, which include manydemonstrations. 

Management skills are developed using an Americanmethod which provides expertise in hospitality manage-ment know-how and an in-depth knowledge of the keymanagement subjects of Human Resource Management,Finance and Marketing which are essential for futureindustry leaders. Programme Structure Years 1 and 2 include a 5 month academic term followedby 4 - 6 month paid internship (page 7). This combinationallows both the theoretical and practical aspects ofhospitality management to be developed.

Hotel Europe & Hotel Miramonte HIM is housed in two former hotels, the "Europe" and"Miramonte", both of which have been fully renovated andequipped to provide state-of-the-art learning facilities. The central location of "Hotel Europe" and "HotelMiramonte" makes student life very convenient. The main

train station, the post office, shopping centres, coffeeshops, restaurants and pubs or the famous "Quai desFleurs" are all within five minutes walking distance of theschool. The HIM Academic Center is located in the building nextto HIM, "Hotel Europe". The LRC, Learning Resource 

Centre as well as the GCC, Graduate Career Centre can bereached within a two minute walking distance. Accommodation Students have the choice of the following accommodationoptions: a) Double or Single Superior Deluxe Rooms Accommodation in "Hotel Europe" or "Hotel Miramonte" incomfortable, refurbished rooms with bath or shower anda spectacular lake view. Rooms are equipped with TV,VCR, Hifi System, wireless internet access and telephonefor incoming calls.

Meals Full board is provided throughout the week at "HotelEurope" and/or "Hotel Miramonte". Three meals are served from Monday to Friday, brunch anddinner on weekends. GCC, Graduate Career Centre GCC has an office within two minutes walking distancefrom HIM and is open during normal office hours. TheGCC staff members visit HIM at the beginning of eachintake to make a presentation about services provided. Recruitment Events GCC arranges a number of recruitment events at HIM.Large hotel chains and recruitment agencies from manydifferent parts of the world visit HIM to present theirorganisation and recruit for available positions. Interviewsessions are arranged after the event and a signedcontract is often the final outcome for the student.

• Provisional Acceptance Letter

This letter is sent out immediately after receiving your enrolment.

• Confirmation Letter/InvoiceAfter we have received your deposit payment of CHF 3.000.- -insurance, CHF 3.300.- - we will send you the confirmation letter.

Residence Permit/Visitor TaxHIM will apply for your residence permit as soon as you arrive in Switzerland. All costs to the authoritiesare included. Foreign nationals staying in Switzerland for more than one week have to pay a daily taxto the local authorities. HIM covers this tax.

VATAll expenses for VAT (Value Added Tax) are covered in your fees.

2) Pre-Departure Assistance, Introduction Week-end

Pre-Departure Orientation SessionIn many countries, HIM or its local representatives organise Pre-Departure orientation sessions about2 weeks before leaving for Switzerland.

Welcome DeskDuring arrival weekend, HIM has a Welcome Desk in Geneva Airport to provide HIM students with anyhelp they may require on arrival in Switzerland. HIM organises transportation from Geneva Airport toMontreux, at an additional charge of CHF 175.- one way.

10 Introduction Workshops10 Check-in Workshops are organised on Saturday and Sunday of the arrival weekend to help studentsto get important information about their stay in Switzerland.

3) Academics

TuitionTuition by qualified and experienced lecturers. The number of lessons depend on selected program and year of study (please refer to brochure for details).

Books & Teaching MaterialExcellent, modern, up-to-date books, as well as all required teaching materials are included in the fees.

Academic GuidanceThe Program Leaders or Academic Dean guide students through the academic term and are avail able to solve any academic problems that may occur.

Study Advisor1st and 2nd year students with initial dif ficulties in certain sub jects can request a study advisor, who is normally a student of the same nationality. A maximumof 10 hours per semester is covered by HIM, additional hours are charged at CHF 10.- per hour.

Prog ess Reports, Record of Achievement2 progress reports per semester are given directly to students. Parents/agents may request to receive a copy by fax for a pre-paid cost of CHF 40.-/report.TheRecord of Achievement is issued at the end of the semester and sent to the student on internship.

InternetStudents have free access to the internet in either the Internet Cafe, the internet computer room or by using the wireless internet access with the airportmodem.

LibraryStudents have free access to the Library. An experienced librarian is available to of fer assistance.

Graduation & Final QualificationAt the end of the chosen academic programme, graduates, relatives and friends are invited to participate in the Award Ceremony.

4) Internship Services

The HIM Internship Of fice assists students inthe 1st year of the Main Program and the PGDProgram to find an internship in Switzerland.

CV Interview/Job Interviews/WorkContractDuring the CV Interview, the Internship Of ficerwill discuss with each student individually her/his Curriculum Vitae and update it in the HIMdatabase. As soon as a hotel/restaurant con-firms interest, a job interview will be arranged.Students will be provided with details regardingthe location of the interview and requested prep-aration. The work contract is then signed directlybetween the employer and the student.

Assistance during InternshipThe HIM Internship Of fice remains available tooffer any assistance or help requested duringthe internship.

Internship Visits

An HIM Internship Of ficer normally visits thestudents during the internship.

Assistance for 2nd/3rd year students2nd year students are encouraged to find theirown internship as part of their academic skillsdevelopment. However, the Internship Of ficeremains available if help is requested.

Internship ReportThe Internship Of fice establishes, together withthe employer, an Internship report at the endof the employment.

MealsAll meals are included 7 days/week: 3 meals from Monday - Friday, Brunch and Dinner on weekends.Students can choose either of the 3 HIM food outlets.

 “Lakeside” Caf eteriaThe International Buffet Cafeteria in “Europe” serves a range of Western and, on occasions, Asianfood. A salad buf fet is also available.

French Restaurant - “One5” The French Training Restaurant in “Europe” serves traditional French food from an “A la Carte” Menu.

8) Insurance and SocialAssistance

InsuranceStudents are covered during the academicterm against illness and accident. Details of the insurance conditions are stated in theStudent Handbook. Students keep this sameinsurance during their internship and benefitfrom a discounted monthly premium of app.CHF 110.-/month.

Social AssistanceOur student counsellor is available for any per-sonal or medical assistance required. For serious

situations, she will arrange a doctor’s visit.

STEP 1: ENROLMENT FORM Fill in the enrolment form and send it together with the followingdocuments to our local representative or to HIM:

1) Transcript of your previous education;

2) TOEFL, IELTS or HIM English placement test results;3) Work references if available;4) 3 passport size pictures;5) Copy of valid passport.

STEP 3: CONFIRMATION deposit payment. This document is needed to apply for the Visa.

Important: The balance of your school fees must reach theSchool’s accounts no later than 6 weeks before arrival. HIM isusually fully booked and does not guarantee the course placeany longer if the payments are not received on time. Single,have been received.

STEP 4: VISA APPLICATION For many countries outside Europe, it is necessary for thestudent to make an application for an entry visa to Switzerland.This procedure may take up to 8 weeks. Please check with thelocal Swiss Embassy.

STEP 2: PROVISIONAL ACCEPTANCE If your application is successful and the requested course is stillavailable, we will send the Provisional Acceptance within 1 week.

If you receive the Provisional Acceptance 6 weeks or less priorto the commencement date, full fees should be transferred im-mediately. If the deposit is not paid on time, the course place

Bank charges are not covered by HIM.Cancellations will be accepted only up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the course by registered mail. Students may make one transfer of theirdeposit or fees paid to another commencement date provided that a minimum of 8 weeks notice is given by registered mail. No refunds shallbe given if students choose to cancel their enrolments afterwards. For cancellations less than 8 weeks before course commencement, norefund will be made under any circumstances. We recommend that you take out our insurance to cover cancellation or early termination dueto medical reasons or accident (max. coverage: CHF 10.000.-). The current cost of this insurance is CHF 300.- per term and must be paid atthe same time as your deposit. If a student’s visa is refused by the Swiss Immigration, HIM will refund the full amount received in CHF butdeduct an administrative charge of CHF 250.-. Refunds will be made 6 weeks after the commencement date concerned. The deposit is notrefunded in any case (only if visa is refused).Students doing the 2 1/2 year programme have the option to take up the AH&LA Diploma for an additional cost of CHF 600.-.The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree is awarded by Northwood University which is accredited by the Higher Learning Com-mission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, one of the regional accrediting agencies for higher education in the UnitedNorthwood University’s BBA program at its campus in Switzerland, and this degree is formal recognition by HIM of the standards achievedby BBA graduates.Fees are reviewed yearly but can be subject to change at any time.The sponsored fees for the English foundation programme applies only for students who apply for a 1 to 4 year programme at HIM and only if fees for the foundation programme are paid together with the fees for the 1st year of study. No refund will be given should a student changeher/his mind and not continue with the main programme. Should a student not reach the required level at entry date, she/he will continuethe English programme at the sponsored price.(Usual price: CHF 900.-, SEG sponsoring CHF 500.- per week = CHF 400.- per week chargedto students.)Each term includes 2 or 3 weeks holiday normally at the end of term or during Christmas.
