Turn your world upside

down and take another

look to see how things

change.

Worst Day Ever?

By Chanie Gorkin

Brooklyn NY

(16 years old)

This world is a pretty evil place.

Even if

Some goodness does shine through once in a while

Satisfaction and happiness don’t last.

And it’s not true that

it’s all in the mind and heart

Because

True happiness can be attained

Only if one’s surroundings are good.

It’s not true that good exists

I’m sure you can agree that

The reality

Creates

My attitude

it’s all beyond my control.

And you’ll never in a million years hear me say

Today was a very good day.

Now read it the other way, from bottom to top,

And see how I really feel about my day.

Crea on 2015

From Wednesday, June 24 through Sunday, June 28, 17 youth attended the Creation Festivalnear Mt. Union, PA. Among these youth were some who have grown up at Slate Hill, some who werenew to Slate Hill, and some with no previous church experience who came along as friends. Each onewas significantly impacted by the experience! Six adults assisted with this group in either full or part-time capacity. Thanks to Carreasa Jenkins, Rich Musselman, Maria Malay, Ben Simcox, Jen Mussel-man, and Joy Fasick for being a part of the action as well as others who worked behind-the-scenes tomake the trip possible. Below is a first-hand account from one of our youth, Hope Onelangsy.

This was my second time going to Creation, and trust me, I was not expecting this much mudand rain. My whole goal at Creation was to strengthen my relationship with God and make newfriends, and I’m happy to say that both of those goals have been achieved. The last time I went, I wasjust excited for the bands, and sure, I was this time too, but this year was different; it’s crazy to thinkthat my best memory of Creation was hearing the speakers. Their experiences with God opened mymind and heart up to the possibilities that our Lord opens us up to.

There was one guy, Bob Lentz, he talked about forgiveness, I believe. His story was that in hisfamily, there was a shooting. A young father, his one daughter, and his wife were all shot several timeswhile trying to feed ducks. The mother and the other daughter survived, but tragically, the father andeleven year old daughter died. I remember that I was mad at the shooter for breaking a family, but Bobthen said, “The father’s last words were I forgive you.” I was confused as to why he would forgivesuch a man, but I understand that you can’t live life with that weight on your shoulders. Jesus died forour sins, everybody’s sins, so we have to forgive those that do wrong even if it’s not in the best opin-ion.

Joy Fasick, our group leader, helped make Creation even more enjoyable. From her side jokesto her morning devotionals, I appreciated it all. Our first devotional on Thursday was about prayer lists.Trust me, I was reluctant to make one, but I did and it has given me such relief and more love for Godthan ever. These past few months have helped me and strengthened myself and my relationships. Crea-tion was definitely a blessing because it made me realize that even if everything seems like it’s goingwrong, it happens because God is playing it out that way. It’ll all be better in God’s hands, and if youtake that away, then your life will be so plain and hopeless sometimes.

To sum it all up, Creation was a muddy, bug-y, happy, an amazing religious experience. Myfaith for God has expanded greatly, even if I am only a fourteen year old teen girl. I’m thankful that mybaptism and Creation were in the same week because that only made me realize that God can do manythings if you let Him; either way, He will always be there.

Hope Onelangsy

Why Such A Big Computer?

Bible translation is very difficult without computers and the associated technology. Translations

that used to take thirty years or more now take twelve years or less. Computers require mainte-

nance. This is why IT Services are so important. A case in point is Heidi’s experience.

Heidi’s computer would overheat and shut down, and the fan was really loud. She brought it to our

department for help. Her Dell Precision had one of the largest screens Dell put on it’s notebook

computers. We all wondered why she needed such a big computer.

I opened her computer and removed the dust ball collecting between the heat sink and the micro-

processor fan. Unfortunately that did not solve the problem. I then replaced the mother board, a

much more ambitious project.

When Heidi came back to pick up her computer, we asked her why she needed such a big screen.

She told us about her work with translators in Nigeria. Heidi is assisting translation teams in pub-

lishing the Scriptures in their language from start to finish. She is working on “camera ready” final

drafts of New Testament and full Bibles to prepare them for printing. Every detail needs to be care-

fully checked, including footnotes, to make sure it all lines up properly on the page. For this reason,

Heidi needs a large screen so she can see two open pages at the same time and still be able to

see every detail of the layout and text.

Heidi is very grateful for the innovations in technology and special translation software that enables

her to do her work. She normally serves in third-world countries, where the battery in her notebook

computer protects it from power fluctuations and outages. Unfortunately, she had to come back to

the US to care for a chronically ill family member. Meanwhile, the portability of her notebook com-

puter enables her to work from home, the office, or even the hospital. And it also provides much-

needed communication with the Nigerian translators she works with through email, Skype, file

transfer, etc. Heidi finds it extremely encouraging that she is able to continue serving translation

teams in Nigeria even while caring for a family member on the other side of the world.

As many of you know, I am currentlyworking toward a Master’s in Coun-seling on the Marriage, Couple, andFamily Counseling (MCFC) Track atMessiah College. The church boardhas chosen to provide funding to-wards my graduate credits. SinceYOU are part of that equation, I useHilltop articles like this to keep you

informed of my progress.

In May I finished my Career Counseling Across theLifespan class. The course provided a great opportunityto explore the benefits of meaningful work and the waysthat counselors can assist people in finding work andmaximizing those benefits. Like so many of my classes,it left me thankful for the great plan of our Creator!

After a short week’s break, I jumped into COUN 511 –Multicultural Counseling. Thanks to the busyness thatcomes with Hilltop Fun Fest and Creation, juggling thedemands of life in a way that allowed time for this classwas a tremendous challenge! (And the reason I haven’twritten an update for a few months.) I am thankful thatmy current course plan doesn’t involve any more classesat this time of year.

Multicultural Counseling focused on the many ways inwhich we are ALL “multicultural” beings, the experienc-es of oppression and discrimination that many peopleface every day, and specific counseling implications for awide variety of cultural groups. It also included a projectfor which I selected African American teenage girls inurban settings as my focus. The immersion componentof this project was deeply impactful and I submitted myproject grateful for all I had learned and yet keenly awareof the knowledge and understanding that I still lack.

As you read this article, I am NOT a student!! Messiah’scounseling program offers only two courses during thelate summer term and I’ve already taken both. The sixweek break is by far the longest I’ve had in my two yearsof sometimes very-intensive study and I am thrilled tohave it. I’m looking forward to cleaning my office, painting our deck, and spending a great deal of time withmy family!

Slate Hill Impressions ofthe World Conference - 2015

It was a unique experience, bringing more than 7500 people from 80 countries around the world to-gether to worship and celebrate our Anabaptist faith in Harrisburg. Here are a few comments fromsome of the members of our congregation who attended.

Ben Fredrick -- I was so looking forward to hearing '606' being sung by 7500+ and I was not disap-pointed! The music throughout the week from the different regions was simply incredible. As werethe speakers who brought their own contextualized perspectives on Christianity. And the fellowshipwith strangers who readily became friends and colleagues.

Sam Zercher -- There were a bunch of fun youth activities, and Bruxy Cavey, who preached the lastevening, was amazing.

Henry Zercher -- I enjoyed playing soccer with people from all around the world in the AnabaptistWorld Cup and listening to Bruxy Cavey.

Isaiah Zercher -- The gaga was fun, and Bruxy Cavey was funny.

Dave Weaver-Zercher -- Attending PA 2015 was a huge highlight of my summer. Singing with Ana-baptists from around the world, hosting a Tanzanian church leader, listening to wise speakers, see-ing old friends, watching our kids gain a sense that they belong to this body of believers: all of it wasamazing.

Valerie Weaver-Zercher -- It was great fun to meet Mennonites from many different nations and cul-tures. I especially enjoyed getting to know some who volunteered with us in the dining room.

Richard Mininger -- One of the highlights for me was meeting people in the food line or at the ta-bles. It was fun getting to know people from Canada, Holland, India, Japan, and several countries inAfrica. I received tempting invitations to come visit churches in Africa.

Nancy Nisly -- What an experience Mennonite World Conference was! I met a past friend/co-worker from the Philippines - half a world away! I met a long term friend of 35 years from Cana-da!!! The singing was awesome! In taking the workshop, "Is Jesus the Only Way," I again honorGod, as I know no one can truly make the claims to be Jesus except the One with the nail prints inHis hands! I gained a greater understanding of what it means "to love" from the stories of our Afri-can brothers.

Page 12: Hilltop News · 2015. 8. 7. · MUSSELMAN, Cindy 08/27 MALAY, Benji 08/30 WILLIAMSON, Connie 08/31 2015 Hilltop Fun Fest Check out some of the 2015 Hilltop Fun Fest photos displayed

12

Paul Nisly -- Four packed, wonderful days--how does one say anything meaningful in a fewwords? Seeing and meeting Mennonites from six continents and over 50 countries enlarged myview of the church--and the singing, WOW! What a rich blend of songs from many countries, voicesjoined in worship of our Lord Jesus.

The sermons on various aspects of the theme "Walking with God" were thoughtful; perhaps mostmoving was (Congolese pastor) Nzuzi Mukawa's sermon "Walking in Conflict and Reconciliation,"which powerfully focused on the story of Abigail, Nabal, and David. Through her intervention Abigailsaved her family from death and David from violent bloodshed. How can we be agents of reconcilia-tion in our troubled world?

Ellie Fasick – Wow! I liked driving the little carts. (These were in the children’s area.)

Joy Fasick – I loved seeing the diversity in our family! You could look around any room and seepeople from many nations talking with each other, smiling together, hugging, and enjoying being partof the family of God. And the MUSIC!!! Absolutely fabulous!

Ben Fasick – Wow. Just wow. Conference was great! Brother Frank (Albrecht) was cool.

Matt Fasick – My favorite part was playing games (Giant Dutch Blitz, Human Hungry Hippos, Gaga, etc.) with people from all over the world.

Linda Mininger — I had the privilege of eating lunch on Sunday with Isabel Florez and Luz ElenaFrancos from Colombia. They were very appreciative of the scarves made for the Mennonite WorldConference attendees and given out by MCC. They mentioned how colorful and practical that thescarves are. Also, they really liked the artful skill that made such variety. Both said they would wearthem in Colombia, even to church. They are very appreciative of the women who all worked togetherto make these lovely scarves. They also commented on a good use of resources.And….It was a delightful week for me personally. It was a wonderful opportunity to host three persons fromGermany in our home. I think what struck me the most about Mennonite World Conference was howpersons from all over the world came together to be unified in our love for God, love for others, anddesire to serve. The Mennonite Church USA and Lancaster Mennonite Conference seem to be socaught up in what divides us that we have lost sight of what unites us. I saw that last week and felthopeful for the future of the Mennonite Church worldwide.

Eliezer Gwamaka — Although I spent just one evening at the Mennonite World Conference, it wasprecious and memorable. I had the opportunity to meet people from different countries around theworld, including my own (Tanzania). I visited the Global Village at the conference where I learnedmore about the Mennonite church in different parts of the world. The sermon and the praise andworship music provided an opportunity to admire the love we share as God’s people even though wecome from many different places and speak different languages. I am glad the Mennonite WorldConference took place during my stay here in central Pennsylvania.

Connect Engage Relate is our theme for 2015. We encour-age everyone to stay alert to the opportunities God pro-vides and to initiate loving interactions with the people intheir lives. We know that Jesus called us to spread the

Good News of salvation – and building relationships is afirst step in answering that call. Focus on listening – with one

ear to the person’s story and one ear to God’s leading.

Below you will find lists especially for adults and especially for youth. However, many items on these lists work well for all ages, so check them all out. Each week during

August we encourage you to choose one idea from these lists. It could be a different idea eachweek or you may repeat ideas. Or go “off the list” and follow the other ideas that God gives you!Remember to commemorate the opportunities God provides by placing a stone during the offeringtime. This is a way to give thanks for God’s provision and presence in each interaction.

Adults:

Invite a friend to come along to the church picnic at Lower Allen Park on August 15.

When eating out, strike up a conversation with your server. If you need a starter question, con-sider these:

“What do you like most about your job?”

“What local attraction do you most often recommend to tourists? Why?”

“What is the strangest special order anyone has ever placed?”

“Is there something I can pray for for you?”

Invite someone you don’t usually have over to come for dinner or dessert.

If you have children, call a friend to schedule a playdate or picnic at a local park.

Sign-up to work at the chicken barbecue on September 12. You’ll meet many new neighbors!

Invite someone to join you for the Wednesday Walking Club.

Go to a local fire carnival or other community event and look for opportunities to connect withthe people you meet.

Something else that God lays on your heart!

Sharing Joy and Fun at

Life Time Adult Day Care

On July 17th, four persons from Slate Hill plus Ulli Klemm's boss

helped staff carnival games at the Life Time Adult Day Care on the

Carlisle Pike. Life Time caters to those with intellectual disabilities and

senior citizens who can't be left alone during the day. Ulli has visited

this day care, with guitar in hand, monthly for the past year and a half

and has always had a blast. A few of the clients from this day care at-

tended the March 2015 Spring Fling at Slate Hill, and came back with

raving reviews. Thus, Slate Hill was invited to help with a few carnival

games.

While an article in a previous Hill Top did not draw volunteers to pro-

vide the clients of this center with some fun, some last minute email

appeals did the trick. Rachel Zimmerman offered to do face painting

and two sons of newer Slate Hiller, Eni Aroko, Shami (age 15) and

Lameck (age 13), joined Ulli in staffing carnival games. Ulli's boss,

Shawn, ran the put-put golf game.

According to Peggy Lego, Program Supervisor from Life Time Adult

Day Care, "Everyone had a fantastic time! Thank you so much to

everyone who came along to help."

If you are ever interested in joining Ulli when he leads residents in folk

and spiritual songs, let Ulli Klemm know. Lifetime Adult Day Care is

located on the first floor in the building at 3 Crossgate Drive, Mechan-

icsburg PA 17050. This is a building that sits off the Carlisle Pike in

Mechanicsburg behind Denny's and T-Mobile just west of where the

exit from and to 581 intersects with the Carlisle Pike. Crossgate is a

small street which takes you to the back of a two-story building where

Life Time rents space on the first floor.

You may contact Ulli Klemm at [email protected] or (724) 464-

8748 to learn more about this opportunity or to assist at any time.
