Traveling in December & JanuaryWe understand many of our families travel long distances for winter
break. Please notify the school office in advance if your child will be missing school before or after the winter break due to your travel plans. These absences will be excused if the office is notified in advance and Ms. Becker gives approval. If you would like to gather work, teachers
must have 2-3 days notice. If you will be gone more than a week, teachers will not be able to gather work for the entire time. Some work
may need to be made up upon your return.
Our winter break this year is over two weeks long, so we would hope most travel can take place during that time. Winter break will run from
Saturday, December 21 – Tuesday, January 7th. Classes will resume on Wednesday, January 8th.

Parent Teacher ConferencesThank you to all our parents who attended parent teacher
conferences on November 6th & 7th. We had great attendance with over 95% of our parents attending. We are committed to visiting with all our parents three times a year so some staff are in the process of
rescheduling some conferences.A HUGE thanks to all our Hillcrest families who provided items for the
Thursday luncheon.
Hillcrest FamiliesLet’s See You Getting Your Move On!!!
Taking It Home — Keep Kids Moving Outside of ClassLet’s work together to promote a lifestyle of health and physical fitness! Physical activity provides a number of benefits, including increasing self-confidence and reducing anxiety in children. Then there is the added bonus doing it together provides, it can help strengthen the family bond. What is your family doing to stay active? I want to feature our Hillcrest families on a bulletin board. Please send me pictures of your family participating in a physical activity together.
It doesn’t have to be sports—just keep your family moving! Here are just a few ideas:Play tag, swim, toss a ball, jump rope, hula-hoop, dance to music or even play a dancing video game. Walk the dog, ride bikes, or play at the park.Celebrate special occasions—like birthdays or anniversaries—with something active, such as taking a hike or throwing a frisbee.
Winter Parties – Thursday, December 19th
Classroom winter parties are scheduled for the Thursday before break. Our winter parties are a lunch of pizza provided by our Family Engagement group. We ask parents to bring in drinks, veggies, and a
dessert. The party sign up sheets will come home on Monday, December 16th
in Monday Mail folders.

HAWK OF THE DAY INFORMATIONTo those families new to Hillcrest being a “HAWK of the Day” has been a Hillcrest tradition for many years. Below is a brief explanation of what is involved when your student is the “Hillcrest HAWK of the Day”. A letter will also be sent home with your student a few days before they are the Hillcrest Hawk so be sure to note that special date.
You may come at 8:35 a.m. on the day you are HAWK to set up your display in the display cases located directly inside the east doors on the west wall hallway. Some teachers have elected to do their HAWK displays in their classrooms and they will communicatewith you directly about set up procedures. These teachers are McAdoo and Marsh.
THE DISPLAY CASES WILL BE LOCKED this year. Our focus is on student made products, culture and the curriculum standard: speaking and presentations. Each student is asked to bring:
● One student made art product from home or school● One student written product (poem, letter, research
paper, etc.) from home or school● Two cultural items from home (i.e. – traditional dress,
photo of holiday celebrations, favorite team memorabilia, instrument) * The goal is to highlight family customs, culture, holiday celebrations, traditions)
● Two personal items from home (i.e. – toy, game, trading cards, doll or figurine)
Presentations will be approximately 15 minutes. Parents, you are invited to join your child for lunch. Adult lunches are now $3.70 and may be paid in the lunchroom when you go through the lunch line.
