These guidelines comply with the current Federal Law as

published in “2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design”

publication, pg. 71.

216.1 General. Signs shall be provided in accordance with 216

and shall comply with 703.

EXCEPTIONS: 1. Building directories, menus, seat and row

designations in assembly areas, occupant names, building

addresses, and company names and logos shall not be required

to comply with 216.

703.5 Visual Characters. Visual characters shall comply with

703.5.

EXCEPTION: Where visual characters comply with 703.2 and

are accompanied by braille complying with 703.3, they shall not

be required to comply with 703.5.2 through 703.5.9.

703.5.6 Height From Finish Floor or Ground. Visual characters

shall be 40 inches (1015 mm) minimum above the finish floor or

ground.

mounted 57" above finished floor to the center of the sign. This is

an interpretation of the Accessibility Guidelines.

enclosed stairs serving five or more stories shall comply with 7.2.2.5.4.1 (A)

through (M). (A) The stairs shall be provided with special signage within the

enclosure at each floor landing. (B) The signage shall indicate the floor level.

(C) The signage shall indicate the terminus of the top and bottom of the stair

enclosure. (D) The signage shall indicate the identification of the stair

enclosure. (E) The signage shall indicate the floor level of, and the direction to,

exit discharge. (F) The signage shall be located inside the enclosure

approximately 60 in. (1525 mm) above the floor landing in a position that is

visible when the door is in the open or closed position. (G) The signage shall

comply with 7.10.8.1 and 7.10.8.2 of this Code. (H) The floor level

designation shall also be tactile in accordance with ICC/ANSI A117.1,

American National Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and

Facilities. (I) The signage shall be painted or stenciled on the wall or on a

separate sign securely attached to the wall. (J) The stairway identification

letter shall be located at the top of the sign in minimum 1 in. (25mm) high

lettering and shall be in accordance with 7.10.8.2. (K) Signage that reads NO

ROOF ACCESS and is located under the stairway identification letter shall

designate stairways that do not provide roof access. Lettering shall be a

minimum of 1 in. (25mm) high and shall be in accordance with 7.10.8.2 (L)

The floor level number shall be located in the middle of the sign in minimum 5

in. (125 mm) high numbers and shall be in accordance with 7.10.8.2.

Mezzanine levels shall have the letter “M” or other appropriate identification

letter preceding the floor number, while basement levels shall have the letter

“B” or the appropriate identification letter preceding the floor level number.

(M) Identification of the lower and upper terminus of the stairway shall be

located at the bottom of the sign in minimum 1 in. (25 mm) high letters or

numbers and shall be in accordance with 7.10.8.2.

7.2.2.5.4.2 Wherever an enclosed stair requires travel in an upward direction

to reach the level of exit discharge, special signs with directional indicators

showing the direction to the level of exit discharge shall be provided at each

floor level landing from which upward direction of travel is required, unless

otherwise provided in 7.2.2.5.4.2 (A) and 7.2.2.5.4.2 (B), and the following

also shall apply: (1) Such signage shall comply with 7.10.8.1 and 7.10.8.2. (2)

Such signage shall be visible when the door leaf is in the open or closed

position. (A) The requirement of 7.2.2.5.4.2 shall not apply where signs

required by 7.2.2.5.4.1 are provided. (B) The requirement of 7.2.2.5.4.2 shall

not apply to stairs extending not more than one story below the level of exit

discharge where the exit discharge is clearly obvious.

mm) minimum, centered on the tactile characters, is provided

beyond the arc of any door swing between the closed position and

45 degree open position.

EXCEPTION: Signs with tactile characters shall be permitted on

the push side of doors with closers and without hold-open devices.

Takeform Standard: Signs that have a permanent room identifier

shall be mounted 60" above finished floor to the top of the sign.

mm) and not more than 80 inches (2030 mm) above the

finish floor or ground shall protrude 4 inches (100 mm)

maximum horizontally into the circulation path.

307.3 Post-Mounted Objects.

Free-standing objects mounted on posts or pylons shall

overhang circulation paths 12 inches (305 mm) maximum

when located 27 inches (685 mm) minimum and 80

inches (2030 mm) maximum above the finish floor or

ground. Where a sign or other obstruction is mounted

between posts or pylons and the clear distance between

the posts or pylons is greater than 12 inches (305 mm),

the lowest edge of such sign or obstruction shall be 27

inches (685 mm) maximum or 80 inches (2030 mm)

minimum above the finish floor or ground.

307.4 Vertical Clearance.

Vertical clearance shall be 80 inches (2030 mm) high

minimum. Guardrails or other barriers shall be provided

where the vertical clearance is less than 80 inches (2030

mm) high.

located 27 inches (685 mm) maximum above the finish

Maximum Occupancy Signs:

1004.3 Posting of occupant load. Every room or space that is an

assembly occupancy shall have the occupant load of the room or

space posted in a conspicuous place, near the main exit or exit

access doorway from the room or space. Posted signs shall be of

an approved legible permanent design and shall be maintained by

the owner or authorized agent.

Takeform Standard:

Every room or space that is an area of assembly shall have the

occupant load of the room or space centered above the door, 2”

off the door trim, near the main access doorway. Signs shall have

1-inch block letters and numbers on a contrasting background so

as to be readily visible. A sign with changeable numbers is not

permitted. This is an interpretation of the International Building

Code.
