Accreditation status of the Higher Certificate in Graphic Web Design:

The Higher Certificate in Grapchic Web Design is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), qualification ID 96731.

Admission requirements for the Higher Certificate in Graphic Web Design:

• NSC or equivalent with a minimum 30-39% or better in the language of learning (English) • Minimum of 30-39% or better in four (4) 20 credit bearing subjects (excluding LO)

International student requirements:

International students must ensure that:• they have an equivalent qualification;• the equivalent qualification is recognised by SAQA; and that• they have a valid study VISA issued in the name of Prestige Academy that covers the duration of their

studies.

NOTE: After successful completion of the Higher Certificate in, the student may articulate to the Advanced Certificate or Degree.

The Student initially applies with Prestige Academy to study towards a specific qualification. Prestige Academy is currently in the process of a business transfer to become part of STADIO. This will result in the Student obtaining a STADIO qualification when the programme has been completed successfully.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAMMEThis one-year higher certificate will equip students with web design skills and techniques essential to develop interactive websites and animation. This programme includes graphic design, because the output will be consumed through a visual medium. It goes further than the purely visual. It stretches to incorporate every aspect of a web experience. The programme includes responsive website design, logo design, user interface design, HTML mark-up, design for ease-of-use (usability), selecting content imagery; frame by frame animation; just to name a few.

MODULE DESCRIPTION

XHTML & CSS

The student will develop fundamental, conceptual and applied competence in this particular context. At the completion of this module, the student will have knowledge and understanding of basic HTML and CSS coding and its application to basic website design. Students will be able to plan the structure and apply correct tools for designing a web design in software such as Dreamweaver. XHTML is a language used to describe data and display content of the website. It is combination of HTML and XML. XHTML can work in many different kinds of browsers like Explorer, Firefox, as well as on mobile phones. Students will also develop understanding of working with CSS, and the relationship between XHTML and CSS.

*In the event of changes in the IT industry, newer and more appropriate software becoming available, alternative software programmes will be considered.

Interactive Creation

Section A: In this section of the module the students will explore animation and audio capabilities in building interactive content that can be shared over the internet. Practical application is emphasized. They will create dynamic motion graphics, including aesthetics of design, motion and sound. By constructing user interactive projects, students will be challenged to combine logical reasoning (basic programming), critical thinking and artistic creativity.

Section B: This section of the module the students will acquire knowledge to create mono and audio sounds, repairing sounds, manipulate sounds and add effects on it. Working with Video clips and add Background Sounds to it.

YEAR 1

Website Design

This module will equip students with the necessary knowledge and a basic understanding of using a professional visual editor for creating and managing Web sites and pages. The student will be able to create and edit cross-platform, cross-browser pages. It also sets a foundation for advanced design and layout tools, as well as making it easy to use Dynamic HTML features such as animated layers and behaviours. Browser-targeting checks your work for potential problems on all popular platforms and browsers.

Applied Design

Section A: This section of the module is designed for those who have little or no experience in vector illustration. Students will acquire knowledge to create vector illustrations, logos and basic web layout, including a wide range of techniques to create professional designs. In this way they will develop the necessary confidence in using computers for vector illustrations and essential techniques for creating and manipulating illustrations and layouts.

Section B: This section of the module is designed to develop essential skills in digital imaging using computer manipulation software. The module provides students with image editing experience and provides the students with knowledge of the different software functions, as well as a range of imaging and editing tools. These tools are specifically used for creating, manipulating and editing images for web as well as print purposes.

Introduction to Entrepreneurship

This module introduces the student to the entrepreneurial world. Students will explore entrepreneurship and the small busi-ness environment in a South African context. They will gain an understanding of the key characteristics needed to succeed as a South African entrepreneur and the importance of strong entrepreneurial leaders and entrepreneurial teams. This module will assist students to use creativity to generate business ideas and how to assess these ideas for feasibility and viability. Finally, students will learn how to take a feasible and viable business idea and compile a basic business plan for their idea.

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a concept associated with career-orientated and vocational training. At this institution, experiential learning specifically refers to job shadowing at a company or organisation. It is of short duration and does not involve any actual work. This is reserved for all higher certificate programmes (NQF 5) that are only offered over a one-year period.
