CASE STUDY:
High Pressure, High Temperature Drilling Operation A FTSE Top 10 UK-based global oil and gas company about to start the most challenging High Pressure, High Temperature Drilling Operation it had ever attempted.
To be successful, the task required outstanding performance, with drilling crews, senior rig and onshore management primed to deliver to an exceptional level in new and potentially critical situations.
Task To provide classroom-based human factors and non-technical skills training at a large High-Fidelity Well Control simulator to complement the additional technical expertise that had been brought in to assist the project
To provide human performance training that would stimulate a comprehensive team response to the drilling operation, backed up by integral checking procedures and driven by a keen awareness of all critical issues and factors within that task.
CTP was chosen for its outstanding record in providing human factors awareness training and specifically for its experience within the oil and gas industry.
Action Taken Pre Operative Training Two weeks embedded with crews and management to deliver real-life, technical, simulation-based Well Control scenarios, working in accelerated real time, to allow teams to gain experience of ‘situations’ first hand.
Providing constructive Human Factors feedback whilst facilitating the exercise de-brief.
Mid-Task Mentoring Multiple visits to continue the training in situ on the rig in the Middle East during the live drilling phase.
To provide ongoing mentoring and coaching for the rig crews and all personnel.

Results Excellent engagement and participation from the crews and management ensured
§ the drilling programme ran well, with tangible and measurable changes to behavioural competencies on board the rig
§ a heightened awareness of the importance of human factors aspects of Well Control, resulting in smoother, more efficient operating procedures
§ individuals and teams were empowered to deliver to exceptional standards, developing critical decision-making tools, based on situation and desired outcomes
