    EXT. CLUMP OF TREES - DAY

    UNDER TITLES AND THEME SONG

    JACK COLBY (Lee Van Cleef) sits smoking a cigarette on arock in a clump of trees out in the countryside. His horsegrazes nearby.

    Jack rises and looks into the distance. BEN MILLER (ShebWooley) rides up from the distance and dismounts.

    They rise and head for their horses as JIM PIERCE (Robert J.Wilke) rides up.

    The three ride off. As a CHURCH BELL rings,

    TITLES AND THEME SONG END

    EXT. CHURCH - DAY

    PARISHIONERS mount the steps of the church as Jack, Ben, andJim ride past into town.

    In a wagon a COUPLE look at each other significantly.

    EXT. SIDE STREET - DAY

    Jack, Ben, and Jim ride into the quiet main street. An OLDSPANISH WOMAN sees them and crosses herself.

    They ride past the fire brigade. A FIREMAN polishing hisengine drops his cloth and runs inside.

    They ride past Ramirez Saloon.

    EXT. RAMIREZ SALOON - DAY

    A small crowd on the saloon porch corner watch the threeride past. One of them is JOE BARTENDER (Lucien Prival).

    JOE BARTENDER

    Did you see what I saw?

    DRINKERCome on, Joe, open it up. We'regonna have a big day today.

    They enter the saloon.

    EXT. MAIN STREET - DAY

    The three ride up to a building with the sign "MARSHAL".They halt and look at it. Jim wants to ride on.

    JIM(to Ben)

    You in a hurry?

    BENYeah. I sure am.

    JIMYou're a fool. C'mon.

    They wheel and ride on.

    INT. JUSTICE OF THE PEACE - DAY

    The three gunmen are seen through the window behind JUDGEPERCY METTRICK (Otto Kruger), riding past.

    JUDGE PERCY METTRICKAll right, all right, let's begin.

    The judge is addressing a SMALL CROWD. In the middle are 50-yr old MARSHAL WILL KANE (Gary Cooper) and his pretty youngbride AMY FOWLER (Grace Kelly), dressed in their wedding best.

    JUDGE PERCY METTRICKNow will the bride and groomkindly step forward.

    (they approach)Will Kane and Amy Fowler, youappear before me in my capacityas Justice of the Peace of this

    township, to be joined togetherin the bonds of holy matrimony...

    INT. BARBER SHOP - DAY

    The BARBER (William 'Bill' Phillips) shaves a CUSTOMER.Through the window we see the three gunmen ride past.

    CUSTOMERMan, it sure is hot.

    BARBER

    Hot. You call this hot?

    The barber looks up through the window, goes to the door,and peers out.

    BARBER (CONT'D)Well I'll be--

    CUSTOMERWhat's the matter?

    BARBERThought I saw Ben Miller.

    CUSTOMEROh, he's down in Texas somewhere.

    BARBERI know. Look like Pierce and Colbytoo. No, it couldn't be, though.

    He returns to shaving his customer.

    EXT. HADLEYVILLE STATION - DAY

    Jack, Ben, and Jim ride up to the station.

    The station comprises a STATION HOUSE, and a WAITING ROOM,with a WATER TANK a little way off, and a STABLE across thetracks.

    EXT. TICKET OFFICE - DAY

    The STATION MASTER (Ted Stanhope) reads a TELEGRAM while thetelegraph chatters.

    STATION MASTER(re telegram)

    My goodness gracious.

    He looks up, and his eyes grow wide with concern as the threegunmen walk up to the ticket office after stabling theirhorses.

    JIM

    Noon train on time?

    STATION MASTERYes sir. That is, I- I think so,sir. Don't know a reason why itshouldn't be, Mister Pierce. Howare you, Mister Miller? MisterPierce? Mister Colby?

    INT. JUSTICE OF THE PEACE - DAY

    The wedding ceremony continues.

    JUDGE PERCY METTRICKDo you, Will Kane, take Amy to beyour lawful wedded wife, to haveand to hold from this day forwarduntil death do you part?

    WILL KANEI do.

    JUDGE PERCY METTRICKDo you, Amy, take Will to be yourlawful wedded husband, to have

    AMY FOWLERI do.

    (they pause. he holdsher)

    It seems to me like people oughtto be alone when they get married.

    AMY KANEI know.

    WILL KANEI'm gonna try, Amy. I'll do my best.

    AMY KANEI will too.

    They kiss, for real this time.

    General ribbing ensues.

    STATION MASTERAnd that ain't all. Ben Miller isdown at the depot now with JimPierce and Jack Colby. They askedabout the noon train.

    WILL KANEThe noon train?

    Will looks up at the clock.

    CU CLOCK: 10:40 am. [09:38]

    MAYOR HENDERSONWill, you get out of this town.Get out of this town this veryminute.

    MARTIN HOWE

    C'mon. Let's get 'em going.

    They usher Will and Amy out. General hubbub.

    MAYOR HENDERSONNever mind that now. Don't stoptill you get to Clarksburg.

    EXT. MARSHAL'S OFFICE - DAY

    As they pour out the door onto the stoop, Amy turns to Martin.

    AMY KANEBut what is it, Mr. Howe?

    MARTIN HOWEDon't you worry, ma'am. Just getout of town and everything willbe all right.

    Martin helps Amy up onto the waiting buggy.

    MAYOR HENDERSONWe'll take care of everything.
