Dear parents and caregivers, The BIG STAND I continue to be impressed with our students attitude towards bullying and anti-social behaviour. They have made their position extremely clear to the school and wider community through our annual Big Stand assemblies and activities which this year included special guest speaker, NZ R&B artist Pieter T. The purpose of this initiative is simply to start a conversation and to get people talking and thinking about the impact bullying has on people. Shortly following the Big Stand week, I was made aware of a student who had witnessed a bullying incident on a bus. Courageously, she stood up for the victim and reported the incident. I'm sure, there will be many others who will follow her example and congratulate her for living the values of our school. Interestingly enough, our Big Stand model has won a prestigious Auckland City for Peace Award. The award is being presented by the New Zealand Peace Foundation, and will be publicly announced at the ceremony on the 21st of September. I would like to acknowledge the student committee and facilitators Donna Agnew and Johanna Milne for their leadership in this area. Reunion Our 40th reunion was successfully held a few weeks ago and it was a pleasure to host over 300 alumni. Many of them have pledged to support the school in a variety of ways which was extremely pleasing to hear. We continue to shape our developmental plans for the school’s future which will include some significant modernisation of our buildings. Our alumni support will be critical in those plans which we hope will create a learning environment that far exceeds initial expectations. My thanks to my associate, Ian Morrison and his wonderfully hard working team that made this event possible. End of term As you will read in this newsletter, our students continue to achieve amazingly well in a very wide and diverse curriculum we offer. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the school production of 'Footloose' but continue to hear positive and affirming comments of an outstandingly professional production. Our Head of Performing and Expressive Arts, Jilly Dryden and her team are instrumental to this success. When given opportunities such as these our students shine! As a school we continue to strive for NCEA excellence and much of our work centres on supporting students achieve this target. Our achievement results and value added data to date are encouraging. We are anticipating further improvements at the end of the year. I expect our senior students to remain focused on their NCEA preparations especially over the holiday break and not to lose focus on what is important. As we approach the end of another term, I would like to wish all our families a restful holiday break and look forward to seeing you all again in Term 4. Regards Iva L Ropati Principal Howick College

Congratulations to all the cast and
crew on a wonderful production of this
classic from the 80’s. Taking on the

Blair Annison-Chisholm, and they
were supported by a cast of talented
actors, singers and dancers from all
year levels.
Also making their debut on the stage
were special guests Mr Morrison and Mr Thomson.

director), Mr Harada (choreography), Mr Young (vocals), Mrs Szopa and Mr Douglas (production managers) Anya

40th Jubilee
On Saturday 6 Sept, Howick College celebrated our 40
th Jubilee with a reunion for former students and
staff. The day involved tours of the school and formal group photos in the afternoon, and an evening Mix and Mingle that was held in the school library.
Over 300 alumni attended the evening event – most came from Auckland but some travelled from further afield in NZ, Australia and even a couple from the USA. It was a very successful event with lots of people catching up and re-connecting with old friends. For many students from the 70’s, it was their first time back and they were amazed at how the school has grown and changed.
The food for the evening was provided and served by our hospitality department and students; and they also opened our café for Devonshire teas in the afternoon, which proved very popular with our visiting alumni and their families.
We would like to thank all those people who helped out in organising and preparing for our big day; the Jubilee committee, Mrs Roberts and Mrs Copestake in food and hospitality, Mrs King and her library team, Mr Douglas and Mr Cheng for tech support, property manager Mr Pearce and his team, photographer Mr Harman, student hosts and Mrs Wright, and bar manager for the night, Mr Tim Noyce.
We would also like to acknowledge and thank the following for their support: Basalt Howick, South Auckland Taxi, Howick Lions, and Howick and Pakuranga Times.
Photos can be viewed on the school website or FaceBook: Howick College Alumni.

Big Stand 2014
This year’s Big Stand campaign looked at the impact of cliques and
labels with an inspiring presentation delivered to the whole school in
assemblies. The aim was to make all aware of how others are af-
fected by being excluded and given a label. Special guest R&B musi-
cian Pieter T shared his high school experiences of trying to fit in.
The Big Stand team left their peers with a message to think of how
everyone is different and encouraged them to make a stand and to
take time to look past the labels and include others.
White Bait TV, producers of The 4.30 Show were also on hand to film
the assemblies and interview the Big Stand - we hope this coverage
will inspire other schools and students to take their own stand and
help create an inclusive and supportive community.
International Students
It has been another busy term in the International Department with a large group
from the Saijo area in Japan, and the largest number of students arriving at the
beginning of Term 3. We also learnt recently that Howick is one of three high
schools in New Zealand selected to take a group of students sponsored by the
Thai government for a four week experience in New Zealand. They arrived at
the end of term.
NCEA exams begin in Term 4 and we wish all our International Students who
are sitting these exams good luck. For those who are not entered into NCEA,
Term 4 is still an important term for making sure you are gaining the most out of
your Kiwi education and experience.
This term we farewell our administrator, Mrs Helen Manoylovic and wish her and her family, all the best for their new
adventure in Melbourne. Mrs Louise Goodall is taking over as International Student Administrator, and we welcome
our new Homestay Manager Mrs Valerie Thomas.
We are still short of good homestays for groups and to have on our database in reserve. Please send an email to:
[email protected] if you are interested in being a homestay parent, either long or short term. Native
English speakers are preferred, although sometimes we do get requests for other languages.
Thirty-one students enjoyed some time on
the snowfields on the annual Howick College
Snow Trip to Mt Ruapehu this term. The
group spent day one on Turoa and day two
at Whakapapa.
Thanks to Mr James and Mrs Gibson for
organising these trips.

Music Tour
The Howick College Jazz Band and Orchestra completed a
successful tour of schools in Matamata. Over two days, they played
at four schools and entertained the children with their talent. Also
on the itinerary was a stop at the Skyline Luge in Rotorua.
Thanks to Mr O’Ryan and Mr Arthur for organising this fun
performing opportunity for our students.

Board of Trustees This term has been a busy one throughout the school and I would like to
say well done to all the students and staff on their continued effort and
achievements.
There has been a change on the Board with Stephen Waters resigning
from the position of Chairperson. On behalf of the Board and school
community, I thank him for his work and support of the school during his
time as a trustee.
As the new Chair, I encourage those interested in offering their support to
the college to put themselves forward to fill the casual vacancy position on
the Board as a parent representative. Please forward your details to:
Peter Jones, Board of Trustees, Howick College PO Box 38142 Howick.
Another change took place with the retirement of Executive Secretary Mrs
Pincham and the Board welcomes Mrs Heaton-Brown to both the school,
and the Board of Trustees.
Congratulations to the performers and support crew for their successful
production of Footloose, which showcased the wealth of talent and skill we
have at Howick College both on and off the stage.
A second big event took place this term with the celebration of the school’s
40th Jubilee and it was wonderful to see so many former students and staff
gathering to catch up and revisit their school. A successful event like this
takes a lot of work from a lot of people and big thanks go to Ian Morrison
and the Jubilee committee for their months of organising. Thanks also to
those who helped the committee with the preparations.
To all our school community, enjoy the holidays and to our senior students;
we wish you all the best for your final push towards achieving your NCEA;
use your break time to continue to aim high.
Regards,
Peter Jones - Board of Trustee Chair
