Awana Missions Project 2011:

Project Care Package – We love our missionaries!

My little children, let us not love in word,

neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

- 1 John 3:18

Launched on 9 Jul 2011, the Project Care Package  initiative aims to encourage our missionary families

in Sri Lanka on a personal level through notecards and  a care package, and to teach Clubbers to show the love  of Christ through acts of kindness.

Each Club has been assigned a missionary family for whom a care package would be prepared. We are greatly encouraged by the support shown by the Leaders and

Clubbers in making this project a successful one.

Come 15 Oct 2011, all three Clubs (Cubbies, Sparks and Truth & Training) will present their care packages and funds

for other missionaries to representatives of the Calvary Missions Committee at a Handover Ceremony.

“U ncle Vijendran” has become a familiar name to the children at Awana Cubbies.

“We want to tell Uncle Vijendran that we love him!” exclaimed six-year-old Cubbie Jeremy Kiang. Four-year-old Cubbie Diane Lin was so excited she even prepared a special card for Uncle Vijendran and his family.

The Cubbies learnt more about Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, where Uncle Vijendran is serving together with his wife, Puspa, and their seven-year-old daughter, Unis. They were shown pictures of the children there, their culture and way of life. They were also told of the hardships faced by the people during the civil war and the devastation caused by the tsunami that hit Sri Lanka in 2004. The Cubbies were also taught what it means to care for God’s servants through the missionary care package. Both Cubbies and Leaders contributed in small and big ways. May God bless all cheerful givers!

their part for the Awana Missions Project 2011.

The clubbers were required to make a coin box using recycled materials and save money in the box for missionary Thamba and his family. Every Saturday, clubbers would bring in their contributions and we would chart them against our “money thermometer,” watching joyfully as it rises week by week.

Another heart-warming project is to get each clubber to decorate cards of encouragement for the missionary

C oin boxes, cards, gift boxes and Leaders’ pledges...What

have these to do with missions work?

Well, these are just some of the ways the Sparks Club encourages both clubbers and leaders in doing

family. These cards will also be sent as gifts to the family.

Through this missions Project, the Sparks Club has learnt to care and share for a missionary in Sri Lanka; give back what God has blessed us; work as a team for the Lord; and pray for mission fields all over the world. May God bless every cheerful giver.

All glory to God!

T he T&T Club has been praying for our missionary, Mr Jeyamoorthy,

and his family as they serve God in the tea plantation hills of Hatton.

Pictures of Mr Jeyamoorthy and his family with their ministry profile and prayer requests are displayed on our Club room door and notice board. Almost every week, the Leaders and

Clubbers learn about the challenges of doing missions work and that God is at work in every situation.

Coming up on 24 Sep 2011, the Clubbers and Leaders will form small groups to write personal notecards and pray for the missionary family. We look forward to this term as we conclude our fund collection and purchase the care package items to be sent with love from our T&T Club!

Clubbers would pray for the gospel work in Hatton.

The Clubbers have also been reminded to be thankful for all that they have and to share their blessings with others. They are encouraged to save in their own little ways — such as give up buying a delicious ice-cream or a can of soft drink and contributing to the care package fund instead.

At Handbook time each week, a special collection box is passed around. And whenever enough money has been collected to buy an item of clothing, the Clubbers and Leaders would help to shade the silhouette drawing of the family on the notice board.

Council Time Nuggets Coming up this term...

This term, the Cubbies will learn more about the missionary story – Ringu. Born in India, Ringu lived in an environment steeped in idolatory and black magic. Ringu’s life took a turn after he met missionary Grubbs Sahib from America, who came to live in the village. He accepted Christ as his Saviour after great odds, and became a boy who was a good testimony to the people around him. Then there’s Salvador of Spain who overcame his drug habits and accepted the Lord with help from the missionaries.

The Cubbies will also sing songs on the love of God and missions, such as “This Little Light of Mine,” “Good News, Good News,” “S-A-L-V-A-T-I-O-N,” and “This is My Father’s World.”

~ aunty Priscilla (Cubbies Director)

The Sparks will be learning more about Missions work from the testimony of Pastor Peter Tan, who first became a missionary before dedicating himself to the Lord's service as a pastor. Sparks Leaders, Lawrence and Angeline Lim, will also be presenting a slideshow on their missions trip to Thailand last year to highlight the ministries in the mountain areas, where much help and prayers are needed.

Another testimony, “A New Heart and a New Mind,” tells of missionary Ravi Zacharias’ struggle in accepting Jesus and how a Christian friend's witness led him to serving God full-time. The term will end with a drama by the Leaders on "Salvation" and a Sparks Prayer Day, where the Sparkies will pray with their Leaders for others and themselves.

A Sparks Thanksgiving Day is scheduled to take place right after Awana Awards Day on 19 Nov. 2011, where the Sparkies will celebrate another year of God's blessings. There will be food a plenty and hugs to our Primary 3 Sparkies who will be progressing to Truth & Training in 2012.

Continuing with our focus on missions, we’ll wrap up the term with the conclusion of our missionary story, “Run, Ma, Run” — a true story on the life of Mary Slessor, who spent most of her life living amongst the native tribes of Nigeria, sharing God’s love in word and in deed. We’ll hear about the challenges Mary had to overcome and how her testimony was a light for Christ in a dark world. From saving babies who were to be sacrificed by witchdoctors to helping cannibals in the African jungles give up their violent ways of life, Mary impacted those around her with the gospel of Christ.

We’ll then resume with our practical series on “Witnessing for Christ” to equip T&T Clubbers with “how-to’s” in sharing the gospel wherever they go. Our team of T&T Leaders who went to Jaffna, Sri Lanka on a missions trip in Aug. 2011 will also be sharing their exciting experiences. An afternoon will also be spent writing notecards to our missionary family and praying for them within our Handbook groups.

~ uncle Seb (T&T Leader) and aunty Jasmina (T&T Director)

Can you remember the books of the Bible?

Four friends acted as Roman soldiers in the story of After that, they Go Eat Pop Corn. Later, they went for Tea. Then they received an SMS: “Please Help James, Peter, and John Jump over the River.”
