DID YOU KNOW?1 SHEPHERDS BUSH MARKET started
in 1914. Following severe bomb damage in the Second World War, the traders cleared the rubble themselves, avoiding the threat of closure.
2 THE DIMCO BUILDINGS are the original coal-powered electricity generating station built for London Underground in 1898.
3 THE BBC TELEVISION CENTRE started in 1950, is built on part of the White City Exhibition site which opened in 1908 with the Franco-British Exhibition.
4 THE BBC MEDIA VILLAGE is on the site of the former White City Stadium, which hosted the 1908 Olympics. It held 150,000 people.
5 DORANDO CLOSE commemorates Dorando Pietri, the marathon runner, who so narrowly missed winning in 1908. Although first to finish, he was disqualified for being helped over the line.
6 THE STONE DECORATION (animals, birds and plants) on either side of the doors in Frithville Gardens are unusual examples of their kind.
7 THE FIRST CUSTOM-BUILT FILM STUDIO in the UK was erected in Lime Grove in 1915. It became the home of British feature films and newsreels. Gaumont Terrace and Gainsborough Court are a reminder of the film companies.
8 HAMMERSMITH PUBLIC BATHS AND WASH HOUSE, 1905, was an important communal place for women to meet and launder the clothes of their large families before washing machines became widespread.
