THE GRIFFITH COMMUNITY IS A PROPOSED LIVING COMMUNITY IN GRIFFITH, INDIANA. IT FEATURES A LARGE TOWNHOUSE WITH RETAIL ON THE GROUND FLOOR, A SPACIOUS COMMUNITY CENTER FOR EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, AND A TRANSIT STOP FOR A PROPOSED LIGHT RAIL INSTALLATION.
THE TOWNHOUSE HAS THREE TIERS OF LIVING ACCOMADATIONS INCLUDING A TWO-BEDROOM, ONE-BEDROOM, AND STUDIO APARTMENT. THE DESIGN HAS A SLOPED FACADE THAT ALLOWS FOR BOTH DAYLIGHT THROUGH THE TINTED GLASS AND A UNIQUE VIEW OF THE SMALL TOWN. THE TOWNHOUSE, LIKE THE OTHER COMPO-NENTS, IS MADE OF A RIGID STEEL FRAME SYSTEM SUPPLEMENTED BY STRONG CONCRETE A-BEAMS AND A PROMINENT CORTEN STEEL CLADDING.
ALTHOUGH LIKE THE TOWNHOUSE IN STRUCTURAL CONCEPT, THE COMMUNITY CENTER SPORTS A TWISTED BOX PLAN THAT ALLOWS FOR THE EXTENSION OF GLAZED AREAS FOR VIEW AND LIGHT. THE ROOF IS INSPIRED FROM TYPICAL SAW-TOOTH WAREHOUSE ROOFING, BUT USES THE SOUTH FACE AS A DAYLIGHTING/SUNLIGHTING POTENTIAL. THE PROGRAM’S STRONGEST FEATURE IS THE INDOOR GARDEN WALKWAY THAT ESSENTIALLY CREATED A WEAVING PATH TOWARD THE TRANSIT STOP.
THE TRANSIT STOP IS WHERE THE STRUCTURAL IDEA REALLY COMES ALIVE BY TAKING THE RIGID STEEL FRAME AND CREATING AN ARTISTIC IDEA FROM THE UTILITARIAN FUNCTION. THE STEEL BARS ENCLOSES THE AREA WITHOUT DIMINISHING ANY VIEWS AND THE GLASS ROOF PROTECTS FROM RAIN AND SNOW WHILE ALLOWING SUNLIGHT TO PENETRATE THROUGH THE TOP.

PERFORATED METAL : polaritySPRING 2012
THE PERFORATED METAL PROJECT IS A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS THAT TRANSLATED INTO AN ARCHITECTURAL FORM. THESE MATERIAL STUDIES WERE SPECIFIC FOR EACH STUDENT, MINE WAS METAL. THIS PROJECT WAS ALSO WHEN I BECAME INTERESTED IN PHENOMENON AND EXPERIERENCE. METAL HAS AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF EFFECTS FROM LIGHT AND SHADOW, MATTE AND REFLECTIVE, RIGID TO MALIABLE.
MY FIRST TWO TESTS DEALT WITH HOW METAL COULD CAST SHADOWS AND HOW SHADOWS CAN INFLUENCE METAL SURFACES. IN THE FIRST ONE THE LIGHT CASTED CREATED SERIES OF GRASS LIKE SHADOWS AS WELL AS PROVIDE A TACTILE SURFACE. THE SECOND TEST WAS A METAL SHEET PUNDED WITH A HAMMER, THE FOLDS AND CREASES AS WELL AS THE SHADOWS THE FOLDS CAST CREATE THE ILLUSION OF CLOTH.
THE STUDIES TRANSLATED INTO A PERFORATED METAL ENCLOSURE THAT EVOLVED INTO A LARGE SCALE ARCHITECTURE EXPLORATION. THE BUILDING WAS A THEATER AND ENTERTAINMENT CENTER LOCATED IN INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA. THE FIRST FLOOR FEATURED THE LOBBY, A MEDIUM SIZED THEATER, AND ALL OF THE BACK OF HOUSE ACCOMODATIONS. THE SECOND FLOOR IS A MULTI-PURPOSE AREA FOR BOTH DINNERS AND DANCES.
THE PERFORATED CLOUD CREATES A DRAMATIC PLAY OF LIGHT AND SHADOW. THE CLOUD WAS CREATED WITH AN UNDULATING FORM TO CREATE GRAVITY WELLS THAT SERVES AS BOTH STRUCTURE AND LARGE DAYLIGHT-ING AND NIGHTLIGHTING LUMINAIRES. THE CLOUD IS A COMPREHENSIVE TRIANGULATED MESH WITH PERFORATED HOLES.

SUNFLOWER STATION : autonomySUMMER 2012
THE SUNFLOWER STATION IS A LARGE AUTONOMOUS STATION LOCATED ON MCGALLIARD ROAD IN MUNCIE, INDIANA. THE CONCEPT WAS TAKEN FROM THE IDEA OF THE MULTI-TOOL, A MULTIPLE FUNCTIONALITY BUILDING THAT ALLOWS THE BUILDING TO REACH A SUSTAINABLE IDEAS. THE BUILDING SERVES AS A SHOWROOM AND RESEARCH FACILITY FOR CUSTOMIZABLE MULTI-TOOL FABRICATORS.
THE CONCEPT WAS A BOTH A DIRECT AND INDIRECT TRANSLATION OF THE TOOL, THE PIVOT POINTS SERVE AS THE STATIONARY CORES OF THE BUILDING. THE FAR NORTH CORE SERVING AS THE LOBBY, THE SECOND AS THE STAIRWELL, AND THE THE THIRD AS THE GALLERY SPACE. EACH POINT ESCALATING IN HEIGHT FROM ONE TO THIRD STORIES.
THE BUILDING IMPLIMENTS MANY SYSTEMS INTO THE STRCUTURE BESIDES THE BASIC ACTIVE SYSTEMS. A SHADING SYSTEM ROTATES AROUND THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING THAT ALLOWS SUN TO ENTER IN THE WINTER AND SHADES THE INTERIOR DURING THE SUMMER. ON THE ROOVES OF THE PIVOT POINTS ARE PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULES THAT ALLOW SUN ACCUMULATION FOR ENERGY. HOWEVER, DURING RAINFALL, THE PV SYSTEM OPENS UP INTO A LARGE PETAL STRUCTURE THAT ALLOWS FOR MASSIVE RAIN COLLECTION.
THE SITE WAS DESIGNED TO MIMIC THE BUILDING WITH THE SHADING SYSTEM. THE SUNFLOWERS ARE PHOTOTROPIC, OR FOLLOW THE SUN’S MOVEMENT. AS THE SHADING SYSTEM DYNAMICALLY MOVES AROUND THE BUILDING, THE SUNFLOWERS WILL ALSO FOLLOW THE SUN. WITHIN THE LARGE MAZE OF SUNFLOWERS, THERE EXISTS SEVERAL COLLECTION PODS FOR RAIN AND SUN BUT ALSO FUNCTION AS COMMUNAL PLACES FOR PEOPLE TO GATHER.

INTERIOR SHOT OF HALLWAYTHE HALLWAYS ARE STRONGLY VIEW ORIENTED AND ALLOWS FOR AN EXPLORATORY WALK, THE CURVATURE HIDING THE DESTINATION FROM VIEW. THE PHOTOTROPIC SHADING SYSTEM BLOCKS LIGHT FROM BEING TOO HARSH INSIDE.
INTERIOR SHOT OF THE GALLERYTHE GALLERY FEATURES A LARGE THREE STORY GLAZED AREA THAT SERVES AS AN EXTENSION TO THE HALLWAY. THE WALL ALLOWS FOR THE SAME EXPLORATORY SEARCH, HIDING THE ENTIRE EXHIBIT AND ENCOURAGING EXPLORING THE SPACE.
CONCRETE COLUMN AND BEAM SYSTEM
CELESTIAL COMPASS : parametric phenomenonSUMMER 2012
THIS PROJECT WAS A WAYFINDING EXPERIMENT IN PARAMETRICS AND PHENOMENON. THE SITE IS LOCATED ON WHITE RIVER BOULEVARD IN MUNCIE, INDIANA AND SITS ON THE RIVER. THE SITE IS RELATIVELY FLAT AND THEN STEEP TOWARD THE RIVER. INSPIRATION WAS DRAWN FROM THE RIVER AND HOW IT WANDERS AS WELL AS NAVIGATION.
THE PROJECT IS BROKEN DOWN INTO THREE PARTS, THE CLOUD, THE LANDMARKS (BUILDINGS), AND THE CENTER; EACH ONE CORRESPONDING TO A METHOD OF NAVIGATION. THE IDEA IS TO IMMITATE OLD NAVIGA-TIONAL CHARTS AND CELESTIAL NAVIGATION. THE CLOUD HAS A SERIES OF PERFORATED HOLES THAT SIGNIFY THE CELESTIAL COLLECTIONS RELEVANT TO INDIANA. AS THE SUN POURS THROUGH THE HOLES, IT RESEMBLES STARS AND AS IT RAINS, THE RAIN RESEMBLES THREE-DIMENSIONAL MARKERS OR BEACONS. THE BUILDINGS ARE OF STRONG CONTRAST TO THE LANDSCAPE TO CREATE LANDMARKS, OR PLACES WHERE PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO REORIENT THEMSELVES IN THE UNDULATING AND CURVILNEAR PATHS. THE CENTER ACTS AS A CONSTANT PLACE HOLDER SIMILAR TO THE SUN, THE BASE IS ALSO ELEVATED TO ALLOW A SLIGHT BIRD’S VIEW OF THE PATHS.
THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE IS TO SERVE AS A WAYFINDING EXPERIENCE, A PLACE THAT IT IS OKAY TO GET LOST IN. THE FEATURES ARE DRAMATIC VERSIONS OF NAVIGATIONAL TOOLS, FEATURE ONE BEING THE SUN DIAL AND CHART AND THE SECOND BEING A LARGE COMPASS.

HOUSE OF WORKMANSHIP : twisted shipFALL 2013
LOCATED IN FORT WAYNE, INDIANA; THIS PROJECT IS TO SERVE AS THE BASE FOR A SECRET GUILD OF CRAFTS-MEN. THESE CRAFTSMEN SPECIALIZE IN CONSTRUCTING BOATS. THE SITE WAS ORIGINALLY A TRAIN STATION, THE LONG SLAB ALLOWED FOR A PERFECT LINEAR PROCESSION OF THE BOAT BUILDING.
THE DESIGN IS TO FACILITATE THE NEED FOR PRIVACY BUT ALSO INSTILL A LAYER OF CURIOSITY. THE EXTERIOR SKIN IS CONSTRUCTED OF LONG WOODEN PANELS PLACED IN AN ALGORITHMIC SEQUENCE TO GIVE A DISTORTED VIEW OF THE INSIDE. THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING HAS A LARGE WORK SPACE ON THE BOTTOM FLOOR AS WELL AS VARIOUS EDUCATIONAL ROOMS AND ABOVE IS A LARGE TWISTED BOX THAT SIMULATES A BOAT FORM IN METAPHOR. THIS UNIQUE BOX IS SEEN FROM THE OUTSIDE IN PARTS AND SHELTERS THE BEDROOMS AND LIVING SPACES.
THE STRUCTURE OF THE ENTIRE BUILDING IS FORMED THROUGH LARGE CONCRETE FRAMES THAT HAVE STEEL CONNECTING INTO EACH ONE. AFTER THE STEEL HAS BEEN PLACED, A PREFABRICATED FRAME IS ATTACHED TO THE FRAME AND WOODEN AND GLASS INSERTED BASED ON THIS PROJECT-SPECIFIC STANDARDS ARE INSERTED. EACH WOODEN PANEL IS INSULATED AND EASILY ATTACHED TO THE FRAME TO SPEED UP CONSTRUCTION TIME OF THE FACADES.

IN LESS THAN 50 YEARS FROM NOW, THE GLOBAL WATER LEVEL WILL HAVE RISEN ABOUT TEN FEET. BECAUSE OF THIS RISE, THE WATER HAVE BECOME MORE TOXIC AND RESOURCES MUCH MORE SCARCE. IN ORDER TO PREVENT FURTHER UNBALANCE AND DESTRUCTION, A LARGE ORGANIZATION IS PUTTING AN EFFORT OUT TO PROTECT ALL AQUATIC LIFE FROM OVER HARVESTING AND PROMOTING AQUATIC REHABILITATION.
THIS FACILITY IS LOCATED IN LOWER MANHATTAN IN NEW YORK CITY. THIS AREA HAS BEEN FLOODED AND SERVES AS A PROTECTIVE LOCATION FOR THE BASE OF OPERATIONS. THIS FACILITY IS LINKED UP WITH AN ALREADY ESTABLISHED LOCATION ON THE WEST COAST IN SAN JUAN, WASHINGTON. THIS OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE COUNTRY ALLOWS FOR OPERATIONS TO BE DONE IN THE ARCTIC SEA WITHOUT THE NEED TO RIP THROUGH ICE OR GO THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL.
THE HORIZONTAL CONDITION IS THE RESULT OF A DYNAMIC CURVE NETWORK DECIPHERED WITH THE MOVEMENT REQUIREMENTS OF FOUR DISTINCT SHIPS. THOSE PATHS ARE DETERMINERS OF PARCELS AND PROGRAM SIZES IN WHICH ARE ELEVATED FOR EDUCATION, AQUARIUM, AND MAINTENANCE FOR SHIPS.
THE TOWER WAS CREATED THROUGH A DYNAMIC SIMULATION OF PUSHING A FORM THROUGH THE HORIZON-TAL CONDITON AND LIKE A TIGHT FABRIC, RIPPED AND SETTLED AROUND THE CORE. THE CORE IS USED FOR VEGETATION FOR THE LIVING QUARTERS, A LIGHT WELL, A RESUPPLYING SHAFT FOR SHIPS UNDERNEATH, AND A CLIMBING WALL TO TRAIN OPERATIVE FOR CLIMBING WHALING SHIPS.

PERCEPTION OF MATTER : form through phenomenonSPRING 2014 : CURRENTLY BEING DESIGNED
ARCHITECTURE IS A MEDIAN. A MEDIAN FOR EXPERIENCE, PHENOMENON, HUMANITIES, AND ART. ARCHITEC-TURE BECOMES SOMETHING ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY VISUAL. THIS THESIS IS THE EXPLORATION OF ARCHITEC-TURAL DESIGN PROCESS WHERE THE VISUAL ARTIFACT IS UNKNOWN TO THE ARCHITECT BUT IS CRAFTED THROUGH THE UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE SPACES ARE EXPERIENCED. THE QUESTION COMES DOWN TO WHY DO THIS?
ARCHITECTURE TENDS TO BE A ONE-OFF APPROACH. THE BUILDING IS FOCUSED ON TIMELESSNESS AND EFFICIENT INSTEAD OF BEING MEMORABLE AND BEHAVIORAL. BEING MEMORABLE INVOKES AN UNDERSTAND-ING OF SENSORY PERCEPTION. THE SENSES ARE THE BEST WAY TO MAKE THINGS MEMORABLE, WHEN MORE SENSES ARE ACTIVATED, THE SPACE IS THROWN INTO MEMORY. IN ORDER TO DO THIS, THE SPACE NEEDS TO BE BEHAVIORAL.
BEHAVIORAL SPACE IS FORMED THROUGH THE EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES OF EITHER ECOLOGICAL OR HUMANISITC APPROACHES. THE WIND, RAIN, AND SUN BECOME VECTORIZED FORCES THAT LITERALLY DEFORM THE ARTIFACT INTO A MORE RESPONSIVE ITEM. THIS NEW GENERATED FORM NOW HAS OPPOTUNITIES FOR EXPERIENTIAL IDEALS AND ECOLOGICAL EFFICIENCY JUST BY BEING DRIVEN BY A NEW METHOD OF DESIGN.
THE FINAL PRODUCT SHOULD BE ABLE TO NOT ONLY PRESENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR PHENOMENAL AND SENSORY EXPERIENCE, BUT ALSO BE ABLE TO INCORPORATE ECOLOGICAL EFFICIENCES WITH RELATIVE EASE.

THESE OBJECTS ARE THE EXPLORATION OF MATERIAL AND BEHAVIORAL STUDIES DEALING WITH SHAPABLE OBJECTS LIKE ICE, CONCRETE, PLASTER, AND PLASTIC WOOD. THESE OBJECTS ARE THE INITIAL STUDIES OF A LARGER PROJECT THAT WILL BE CONTRUCTED LATER IN THE SEMESTER.
THE LARGER OBJECT IN QUESTION IS A ROUGHLY 22.5 CUBIC FOOT WALL SYSTEM THAT ALLOWS LIGHT TO PENETRATE THROUGH CERTAIN AREAS OF THE WALL. AT THIS POINT, THE WALL WILL BE MODELED IN MAYA USING CLOTH DYNAMICS AND EXPORTED INTO RHINO TO CONTOUR THE OBJECT AND SPLIT IT INTO MILL SHEETS. IT WILL THEN BE PLACED IN MASTERCAM X5 AND THEN OUTPUTTED ON THE CNC MILL FROM FOAM. THE FOAM WILL THEN BE CONSTRUCTED AND GLUED TOGETHER AND THEN PLASTER OR CONCRETE WILL BE POURED ONTO THE WALL SYSTEM AND SANDED AND POLISHED. A FINAL INFILTRATING COAT WILL GO ON AND THEN BE POLISHED AGAIN.
