Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has come a long way in the 56 years since its raising in 1962. A truly glorious past motivates the close knit Himveer's family both individually and as a team.

We salute our comrades-in-arms who have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty at the altar of motherland for upholding the Nation’s honour and security. Their sacrifice will continue to inspire us. We also hold our brethren who suffered grave injuries in the call of duty, in highest esteem.

This compendium on ‘Heroes of ITBP’ dedicated to martyrs and brave hearts of the Force has been compiled for the first time by the PR Cell, Dte Genl. I hope that our present and future generations would be highly motivated after going through the descriptions of bravery, courage and exemplary grit of the Force personnel in the line of duty.

Jai Hind.

Head Constable Kul Prasad of the 2nd Bn demonstrated outstanding courage as well as leadership of an exceptional order, in a critical situation, bringing into sharp focus, on the ground, the inescapable multiple role of the Force and the importance of its individual specialization for the terrain in which it functions and was awarded the 'Police Medal for Gallantry'.

At 1800 hrs on 6 Feb 1992, Shri V. P. S. Tyagi, CC made the ill fated decision to break up his pay party into units for tactical move in order to trudge the heavily snowed treacherous route infested with a series of avalanche points at the ITBP Transit camp in the Malari axis in Garhawal Hills just 200 mtr short of Bhapkund.

He placed himself in the middle of them to supervise the movement of troops better. While on their way, a suddenly triggered avalanche loomed before their eyes hitting them straight, hard and flat. Satish cries for help pulled Tyagi out of the safety of the boulder. Shri V. P. S. Tyagi manged to catch hold of Satish's hands. In the mean time, a second wave of devastating avalanche came on. The wide eyed party sheltered behind the boulder, saw Sukhdev rushing towards Sh Tyagi in an act of help and rescue. But there was no one left for rescue. Both lay buried under a dazzling , cold, cruel white sheet of lifeless snow. Sh V. P. S.
