Zain and Anoki

1 “I am sure I will win,” shouted Zain as he pulled his toy box from under his bed. He looked through it and took out a blue balloon with green polka dots all over. “I will blow it into a big balloon, and it will go higher in the sky.”

2 Anoki looked at the little blue balloon. “Mine will go higher in the sky. It’s special,” said Anoki. He tugged at the string of his big foil balloon, and it swooped down. Zain blew up his balloon. It was as big as Anoki’s.

3 The two friends went out to the backyard. It was breezy. They let go of their balloons. Up and up went the balloons. The boys looked on. Then, the breeze stopped. Zain’s balloon floated away. Anoki’s went higher and higher in the sky.

4 Zain was sad. “Don’t be sad, my friend,” said Anoki. “Mine was filled with a special gas. It had to go higher. We both win.” Zain understood and smiled.

Balloon Animals

1 Making balloon animals is an art. If you can blow up, tie, and twist a balloon, you can shape it into any animal. You can make a poodle, a frog, or even a unicorn.

2 Use long balloons to shape into animals. These can be easily twisted and folded into different shapes. First, blow up a balloon and tie off its end. Next, twist the balloon a few times to divide it into parts. Then, twist and fold different parts of the balloon to shape it into an animal. The trick is to learn and practice how to make a good twist and the correct fold.

5Why are long balloons used to make

animals?

Long balloons are more beautiful.

Filling them with air is easier.

Twisting long balloons is easier

It is easier to tie them together.

6What do you need to practice most to

make great balloon animals?

Blowing up balloons

Making good twists and folds

Making different ties

Holding the balloon correctly

7What is the second step in making a

balloon animal?

twist the balloon a few times

blow up a balloon

twist and fold different parts

shape it into an animal

8What type of animals can you make

from balloons?

Any type of animal

Only poodles, frogs, and unicorns

Animals with long tails

Only animals with different colors

The Venus Flytrap

1 The Venus flytrap is an amazing plant. They are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They catch and digest insects. Sometimes, they may even catch frogs if they are really hungry. After catching its prey, it takes up to 10 days for it to digest. After the 10 days, it will reopen its trap to catch something else. The trap part of the plant has six trigger hairs that it uses to sense and capture insects. Whenan insect gets close to the hairs, the trap will close. After about 6 catches, the trap turns brown and falls off.

2 People are so interested in these plants that they have taken them away from their natural habitat. They are now considered endangered plants.

The Old Tractor that Could

1 The rain fell hard at the farm. The farm animals huddled in the barn to stay dry, except the pigs. They were rolling around in the mud and squealing about how much fun it was. The old tractor sat parked beside the red barn. He, too, just watched the pigs as they went from one puddle to another.

2 From a distance, the tractor heard a loud cry for help. “Help! Help!” cried the smallest pig. The tractor looked up and could see the little pig in a big hole filled with water. She couldn’t get out. Her snout barely stuck out of the water. The old tractor started its old engine and headed to the puddle as quickly as he could. He drove into the big puddle.

3 The old tractor told the little pig to grab on. She turned and was able to grab onto the front of the tractor and pull herself up. “Thank you,” the little pig said almost out of breath.

4 “No problem,” the old tractor replied. He smiled and was happy he could still be useful. The other animals in the barn cheered for the tractor. The little pig came over and gave him a big hug. It was a good day.

Glitter Pens and Shiny Rocks

1 The day before was Molly’s birthday. Sobia had given her a set of glitter

pens. Molly could not be happier. She brought it to school to show her friends.

2 Michelle exclaimed, “They are so beautiful!”

3 “I have an idea,” Sobia announced. “Let’s all color with the glitter pens.”

4 “Can I color, too?” Joe asked politely.

5 “No!” Molly snapped. “Only I will color. You can watch.”

6 Nobody stayed to watch her color. Molly didn’t understand. These are my

glitter pens. I can’t have everyone using them, she thought.

7 During lunch, Molly sat alone. She was not in a good mood. Sobia even saw

her wipe away a little tear from her face.

8 At recess, Joe was showing his collection of rocks to everyone. Molly liked

the shiny orange one.

9 “Here, Molly, see how smooth it is!” Joe said, holding out the rock in his hand.

10 Molly took the shiny pebble in her hand and admired it.

11 “I have an idea,” said Molly. “Why don’t we draw on and color Joe’s rocks?”

12 “We love your idea!” Sobia, Michelle, and Joe spoke together.

13 Molly was happy to share her glitter pens with her friends.

Double-jointed

What is double-jointedness

1 Some people can move and stretch more than normal. This is called being double-jointed. The double-jointedness is because the ends of bones are unusual at the joints. Most people don’t have any health problems because of this. One out of four people are double-jointed.

Unusual Moves

2 Some people can bend their thumbs back to their wrists. Some can bend their knee joints back. Some can even put their legs behind the head. They can really stretch. It may look weird and cool at the same time. Being double-jointed can help an athlete. For example, it can help a gymnast, or a baseball player stretch and bend better. It can also help musicians like violinists.

Move with Care

3 Do not try to test if you are double-jointed. A doctor can do a test to find out. If you are double-jointed, you need to take good care of your joints and muscles.

The Case of the Missing Pencil

1 The perfect pencil was pink with blue stripes. It had a silky feather that stuck out of the end of it. The soft feather tickled her nose when she wrote. Kelly had won the pencil at the school carnival, and she loved it more than anything. She took it to school and showed her friends. Kelly used it every day on every assignment. Then one day, it went missing.

2 Kelly was upset. She could not believe what had happened. How could someone steal her special pencil? In an instant, she became a detective on the prowl. She was determined to find the thief. She scanned the silent classroom with her squinty eyes and her hands on her hips. She glanced from one student to another but did not see her pencil. Tears started to form in her eyes. Finally, from the back of the room, a boy held up her perfect pencil. She darted over to him as fast as she could to get her pencil. Kelly would not let her pencil out of her sight from then on.

Their hearts were beating like a drum. Ben tried to run but stepped on a branch instead. Ryland jumped at the sound and let out a little scream.

A Berry Important Question

1 Do you know that a strawberry is not a berry? More surprising is that a banana is a berry.

2 A fruit grows from a flower. Inside the flower, there are special parts that make seeds. To be called a berry, a fruit should grow from a flower with only one such special part. It also must have a soft peel, a soft flesh, and two or more seeds. That is what makes the banana a berry. It grows from a flower with only one special part, has a soft peel, a soft pulp, and contains many seeds. Its seeds are so small that people do not notice them.

3 Strawberries are a type of fruit, but they are not berries. They grow from flowers that have many special parts instead of just one. Each flower grows many fruits that are joined together.
