RECENT CLUB ACTIVITIES . . .

Bombala Machinery & Engine display – Saturday 12th November

Only 2 cars from the BHMC left Merimbula for the bi-annual Bombala Machinery & Engine display day on a cloudy, overcast morning. Brian & Jenni Wills had a spot of trouble at the top of Brown Mountain when a coil failed in the electrical system on their “Statesmen”. We are pleased to hear that all has been fixed now. Henry & Janelle Petterson travelled via Mount Darragh in their “new” 1955 FJ ute, meeting many “Cobras” (and other varieties, including a red Nissan sports car who thought he would be booked for sure by a closely follow-ing police car, which luckily was travelling to an accident further down the mountain!!!). All were taking part in the “Surf to Summit” rally with Cooma Car Club. Arriving in Bombala to a glorious weathered day to find that the Machinery & Engine show is becoming bigger and better each time .The crowd of people was well up on previous occasions with food and market stalls to delight. A new museum is being built beside the existing “Lavender House” – to be opened in about 2 weeks time. Highlights of the day were:- a small steam-operated tricycle-car and the huge Crossley engine which was the original engine used in Bombala to generate their electricity. The Bombala engine club has purchased the En-gine and intend to have it running at the next Engine show in 2 yrs time. 10 cars came up from the Pambula Historic Car club. A wonderful day in all. (Thanks to Henry & Janelle Petterson for this article.)

Registration Inspection Day at Anthony’s – Sunday 13th November

There were around 15 cars turned up for the end of year Registration Inspection Day at Anthony Dack ’s Car and Head Centre. Anthony and his assistants were pleased to see that all Members followed the requested inspection procedures and all cars were checked in a very short time. No major faults were found which was good to see that Members are taking on the responsibility of keeping their cars in sound roadworthy condition.

Midweek Run – “On the Perch” and more – Thursday 17th November

Trevor Page and his shiny red Commodore met Gary and myself with our Bellett in Bega to visit "On the Perch" Bird Sanctuary at Tathra. The driveway entry had sculptures and a lovely dam then leading to the car park and sculpture garden. We only visited the Gift Shop and Café area. I recommend the Club visit another day with more members, it looks lovely. We then continued on to Kianinny Picnic area a beautiful picturesque location where we enjoyed lunch, solved world problems and watched the “Shag on a Rock!” It was a very enjoyable day. (Thanks to Monnica Smith for this article)

Picnic at Members Shed – Ron & Carolyn Cole’s – Sunday 27 November 2016.

It was a great roll up with top weather. Ron and Carolyn have a lovely house with a magnificent view overlooking the

Cobargo district. The extensive gardens around the house are the pride and joy of Carolyn and Ron.

Ron has a number of sheds which we looked through with a few stories along the way. The large shed adjacent to the

house housed 3 – P5 Mk.1 Rover Sedans and an MGTC at the time of our visit along with a comprehensively

equipped mechanical machine shop and other property equipment.

Ron & Carolyn supplied meat for a BBQ which was well catered for with members bringing salad & sweets to share.

Will Mead’s fine cooking skills were appreciated by all. Just before leaving on a further shed inspection, Bob & Sharon

turned up late to clean up leftover BBQ meats and salads which we are sure they enjoyed.

We travelled down the hill in Ron’s truck to another couple of large sheds housing large hay rolls and extensive farm-

ing equipment. There was also an excellent vege garden with healthy looking produce.

The drive in with large shed and Members cars parked on

the right.

Update on Progress of Classic Vehicle Scheme

(Information circulated to ACMC members by Terry Thompson for advice to clubs).

Historic Conditional Registration (HCRS) (or HCS) & Classic Vehicle Scheme (CVS). (Now includ-ing modified vehicles under 3.5 tonnes GVM).

We are almost there with the introduction of the CVS for modified vehicles. ACMC is in regular contact with the RMS and have been informed that they are awaiting the sign-off by one Director before Terry Thompson will be called in to sign the official paperwork prior to the scheme commencing.

All clubs should take note that RMS has made it plain that once the CVS is in operation the RMS will offer a “period of grace” before the RMS inspectors come down on vehicle owners who have incorrect vehicles on the HCRS scheme.

With the introduction of the CVS there will no longer be any excuse for clubs, registrars and owners to fudge the orig-inality rules of the Historic Vehicle Scheme. There is no longer any need to argue over the interpretation of the rules. Any modifications or any doubt about interpretation should immediately mean that the vehicle should be registered under the CVS. A significant percentage of vehicles now on H-plates will have to move quickly to the new scheme.

Penalties and Fines:

The penalty for owners who exploit the HCRS by registering modified cars will be cancellation of the rego plus the club concerned will come under question for its right to be on the approved list.

The fine / offence for not using the Log Book correctly, is to be a $440 fine and the loss of 4 points.

There have been reports of the new forms for the CVS already being available at some RMS offices. We have also had reports of owners who by-pass the Registrars to successfully renew their H-plate registrations by presenting a pink slip and the 1259 form at RMS. Some RMS staff may not be fully conversant with the requirements but this will not save any owner who has not correctly registered the vehicle. The club stamp must be affixed to the 1259 form and two stamps will be required when registering on the CVS.

Roadshows:

We will quickly schedule a series of meetings around the state as soon as the commencement date is firm. All clubs

will be advised of dates, times and venues as soon as they are known. All our clubs should send several delegates

or individual members to these meetings for a full briefing on the new schemes and their operation.

Five Hells Angels walked into a bar, ordered their drinks and sug-

gested the lone drinker at the end of the bar should pay. When he

refused they punched him up and threw him out of the pub.

“He wasn’t much of a fighter” said one of the bikies to the barman.

“He is not much of a driver either” said the barman, “He has just

had an accident and driven his truck over five motorbikes.”

MEMBER’S VEHICLE FOR THE MONTH

This month’s article covers the historic vehicle owned by recent new club members Neil and Kerri Wood. They de-cided that an iconic American vehicle was what they would like to own and set about realizing their dream. Neil ’s story follows.

After deciding to purchase a Mustang I found 7 right hand drive models on the internet in April 2016 and a trip to Sydney to look at them had me thinking about buying this 1968 coupe. I thought about it for a week and rang the owner’s son to negotiate a price but found it had just been sold to a chap in Tas-mania. Luckily for me the sale ended up fall-ing through, as the chap had four other cars on the go and his wife put her foot down.

So we had the car engineered for the RHD conversion (old one thrown out) and then I drove it home.

This car is a matching numbers car built on 14 December 1967, a 1968 model at San Jose, California plant R. The car spent the next 28 years in America (I’m still trying to trace its history). The car was imported into Australia in 1996 by a chap in Kogarah, Sydney who converted it to RHD, fitted large disc brakes off an XB model Ford, brake booster and power steering and electronic ignition. I think the motor would also have been overhauled, suspension updated and also repainted. The interior is all original upholstery except for new seat belts and steering wheel.

The family from whom I bought the car purchased the car in 2000 but unfortunately the father died in 2002. In 2003 the son had the heads removed and stainless steel valves and valve seats fitted so that the car could run on ordi-nary unleaded petrol. The family held onto the car for 16 years because it had meant so much to their dad. Car was always garaged at Oatley, Sydney and rarely taken out doing only approx. 200kms a year in that time, mainly only coming out for registration checks until they decided to sell the car in 2016.

So far I have done a lot of repairs on the car. Firstly the differential was removed and completely rebuilt, new wheel bearings, seals, universal joints, brake and radia-tor hoses, fan belts, carburetor completely overhauled, new shock absorbers and still going. Now the fuel tank sender needs replacing and the automatic gearbox has developed a bad oil leak through the kick down lever seal. It will be sent up to a Narooma auto specialist for a complete rebuild. I’m slowly getting there where hopeful-ly it can be a reliable drive to enjoy. (thanks to Neil for this article)
