I had the pleasure ofinterviewing David to find outthe narrative behind thisconstruction flagship that hasbrought so much meaningfulcraftsmanship and appeal toour city.
David: The maintenance of ahistoric home is not really thatmuch different than themaintenance in a newer home inmy opinion. Maintenance on ahistoric home is easily taken careof by simply being observant andproactive.
If you see something, then saysomething before it gets out ofhand. If an issue does pop up,the best advice we have in mostcases is to fix it, don’t just patchit. You will spend more time andmoney patching the same thingmultiple times rather than fixingor replacing it once. The majorityof the time it will only get worse,could cause more problems toother things, and the cost torepair can increase significantly.
If you notice a nail in your tire,you don’t wait to fix it until you'reriding on the wheel. And itdoesn’t matter if the tire is on aModel T or a new car off theshowroom floor. Over the past22 years in business and workingin the historic districts, we haveaddressed virtually everyconceivable issue multiple timesthat could pop up. Sometimes Ifeel like an ER doctor. So we havea hands on knowledge base andan eye for things to look forwhen issues arise and we canhelp by identifying the realproblem.

Darian: I and many others love agood historic home, however,some may feel a bit uneasy aboutthe maintenance needed topreserve one. What advice wouldyou give to them and how can youall help?

David: I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of so manyfascinating residential and commercial projects that it’sjust too tough to pick one because everything we do isso unique. I enjoy and appreciate all forms ofarchitecture and I treat each one as if it were my own.That’s just my nature. It was really exciting andchallenging to do the five story Kingman building whenthe Bricktown canal was being built at the same timeindeed. Further on the commercial side, the YucatanTaco Stand and Bourbon Street restaurants inBricktown were fun projects along with the BricktownCandy Company. We enjoyed doing offices for the Cole& Reed CPA Firm just north across the street of theCivic Center that’s now changed their name to RSM.
There are so many absolutely stunning homes we’vedone I wouldn’t even know where to start.I will say though, if you press me, one distinct projectthat stands out at the moment was the private ridingstables we recently completed as it was so differentfrom our norm, yet just as intriguing and detailed asany other project we’ve ever done. I use the wordstable loosely, as it’s a completely adorned equestrianhome with everything one would find in their ownhome.

Everyone that’s hadthe privilege to visit the stables wants to live in thestables… In fact, singer Miranda Lambert took a privatetour and commented that she would like to buildsomething just like it for her horses.

Darian: What is your best tip forhomeowners who want to remodel theirhome?
David: I’d say the main thing homeownersshould do is just be flexible and openminded about options they may not haverealized initially. There are always differentways to design areas. Being flexible is key togetting the best final results in myexperience.
Darian: What kind of projects would be themost impactful in your opinion?
David: I think the kitchen and the masterbedroom and bath are the two mostimportant areas to address. If you can sneakin more storage as well that’s always abonus. Homeowners have to eat and sleepfirst before anything else, so in my mindthose two areas are top priority.
