The Mission

Our mission includes, “(the) interpretation of the history of Northeastern Wisconsin and its people.” Our challenge is how to keep the message of the mission fresh and relevant.

The Project The Children’s Interactive Learning Center will bring fun to the forefront. Designed as a small fort, it complements the adjoining historical Fort Howard interpretive area. Construction features half log exterior, twin towers, slides, climbing wall, an open air activity space, a climbing hill, water fountain, picnic space, and hands-on activities involving costumes, musical instruments, mechanical motion, and measurement. Heritage Hill will develop historical educational programs utilizing the Center that link to Park educational programs. The Center features a variety of kinetic experiences for children ranging from general play to STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) educational features, all designed with a historical context. The Center is highly ADA compatible throughout, providing engaging activities for a broad range of ages and abilities.

THANK YOU FOR GETTING INVOLVED

Volunteer Thank You

Thank you to all our many volunteers who helped us this season. From restoration to visitor services to education, as a non-profit, we rely on our volunteers. When you visit the Park you will pass through our beautifully tended front garden. The Amanda Cobb Garden was donated in memory of this dedicated founder. You also have probably seen a lovely lady tending to this substantial front garden. Judith Michaels has logged over 150 volunteer hours, just this season! Next time you visit and see her in the garden, please thank her! We appreciate her generous gift of time and talent more than words can say!

Annual History Keepers Named

The 6th annual History Keepers were named at the Cotton Club Soirée. This tradition honors those who have gone above and beyond to support and promote Heritage Hill. While Heritage Hill is blessed by a number of qualifying supporters, this year’s award holds a special place for the Restoration/Maintenance staff.

This year’s History Keeper Award was given to John and Sue Daniels. Heritage Hill is privileged to be stewarded by two individuals whose dedication extends from hands on, in the trenches volunteer work to targeted financial support. John and Sue have spent significant volunteer hours and dollars pouring their hearts into Heritage Hill. It has been said that volunteers are often the best place for an organization to seek donors because they invest with their hands and hearts. We honor and thank John and Sue from the bottom of our hearts.

Tiffany Polzin - Featured Volunteer

Tiffany Polzin is one of Heritage Hill’s many valued volunteers. Tiffany started volunteering at Heritage Hill at the age of 10 with her older sister. She is starting her senior year at Denmark High School this fall, and continues to volunteer at Heritage Hill and a variety of other organizations. Tiffany strives to provide guests at Heritage Hill with a positive and inspiring experience. She was nominated for and won the WPS Volunteer in Education Award by her forensics coach and musical theater director. She received a monetary gift, which she generously decided to share with Heritage Hill. We are forever grateful for Tiffany’s donation and volunteer time. She is a true example of someone who shares time, talent, and treasures!

The Cotton Club Soirée

On June 22, Cotton Club Soirée guests were wined and dined and entertained for the 35th season. A delicious meal by the Hyatt was followed by awards and then entertainment by the infamous Will Rogers. Parker Drew's nostalgic first person rendition gave us a look back at Roger’s colorful lifestyle and the iconic times of the early 20th century. Rogers regaled the audience with familiar quotes such as, “I don’t make jokes about the government, I just report the facts.” And, “Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.” Thank you to Mr. Parker Drew for bringing Will to life! And to our donors for making everything we do possible.

Please Support YOUR Park

The lazy days of summer are fading as we look forward to the fresh crispness of fall. That back-to-school feeling overtakes us all as we get excited about what a new season will bring. We share that excitement at Heritage Hill as we strive to embrace the new vision of Historic Preservation, Education and Fun.

Firmly gripping our responsibility to the past, we look to enfold new elements with relevance and fun that keep history alive and vital for our guests and students. From an Educational Playground to new hands-on activities at the Belgian Farm and the Blacksmith Shop, we are invested in what is important to you, your family and northeast Wisconsin.

We need your support to continue to bring fresh programs to students, to preserve 200 year old structures that hold our history, and to maintain one of the unique treasures in the state park system.

Heritage Hill is supported primarily from private donations. This is your history and your park. Please come and enjoy the Park this fall and share your love of Heritage Hill with us through your donation. Look for our annual appeal mailer in October or contribute online at http://heritagehillgb.org/foundation/donate-or-purchase-tickets/.

Sincerely,

Barbara Miller, Executive Director, Heritage Hill Foundation

Platform Grain Scale

Please "weigh" in on the new interactive activity in the Log Barn at the Belgian Farm. This scale would likely have been used to weigh quantities of goods up to 300 pounds! It's similar to the scale you use at the doctor's office.

Visit Heritage Hill to test out our new grain scale by stepping on the platform to weigh yourself or whoever you are with!

Blow Some Hot Air

One of the most loved buildings at Heritage Hill is the DeWitt Blacksmith Shop. Seeing sparks fly, hearing the blacksmith hammering and bending the metal are experiences many visitors love. You can be one step closer to being a blacksmith. Heritage Hill’s wonderful Restoration team has installed an extended handle on the bellows so you can help the blacksmith do his work. Children, like Bryce in the picture, and adults alike learn the importance of fire and heat to the blacksmith’s job while adding oxygen to the forge. Visit us at our Spirit of Christmas Past event to help the blacksmith make his creations!

SPECULOOSSpeculoos [speky’lo:s] is arguably the most popular cookie in native Belgium. Order a hot drink just about anywhere and chances are you’ll get a speculoos on the side. The crunchy treat gets its distinctive taste from a blend of spices that varies from baker to baker; most recipies combine eight spices that include cinnamon, cloves, pepper and cardamom.

Come check out more holiday traditions at our Spirit of Christmas Past event in December. Show this newsletter and receive 1 free kids admission with an adult admission.
