Heretaunga College

Year 13 Subject

Information Guide

Selection for 2017 Academic Year

INTRODUCTION Heretaunga College has implemented a pathway approach to choose your subjects at the senior level. The pathway symbols are derived from the new Ministry of Education Vocational Pathways. The six vocational pathways are:

Creative Industries Includes vocations such as artist, graphic designer, screen printer, actor, art director, technical manager, stage/set designer, creative director.

Primary Industries Sector Includes vocations such as dairy farmer, forestry contractor, horticultural worker, vet nurse.

Service Industries Sector Includes vocations such as chef, travel agent, hairdresser, retailer, fitness trainer.

Social and Community Services Sector Includes vocations such as doctor, nurse, fire fighter, police officer.

Manufacturing and Technology Sector Includes vocations such as welder, automotive engineer, boat builder, electrician, graphic designer.

Construction and Infrastructure Sector Includes vocations such as plumber / gasfitter, civil engineer, architect.

UNDERSTANDING NCEA QUALIFICATIONS

Credits will be gained by external examinations and/or internal assessments in either achievement or unit standards.

Results will show credits and grades for separate skills and knowledge. The National Certificate in Educational Achievement is awarded at three levels:

Level 1 Requires 80 credits, including ten (10 each in literacy and numeracy). English and Mathematics courses allow this requirement to be met in most cases. These credits are also available through other subjects. Each student needs to check where they expect their numeracy and literacy credits to come from.

Level 2 Requires 80 credits, of which 60 must be at Level 2 or above on the qualifications framework. Students cannot be awarded NCEA Level 2 without fulfilling the Level 1 requirements for numeracy and literacy (10 credits in each).

Level 3 Requires 80 credits, of which 60 must be at Level 3 or above on the qualifications framework (the other 20 must be at Level 2 or above). Students cannot be awarded NCEA Level 3 without fulfilling the Level 1 requirements for numeracy and literacy (10 credits in each).

Recognising High Achievement Certificates can be ‘endorsed’ to reflect high achievement in a significant number of standards. Course endorsements will show that students have performed well in an individual course. Certificate Endorsement If a student gains 50 credits at Excellence, their NCEA will be endorsed with Excellence. Likewise, if a student gains 50 credits at Merit (or Merit and Excellence), their NCEA will be endorsed with Merit. The Record of Achievement shows endorsement awards. Credits earned can count towards an endorsement over more than one year and more than one level. However, they must be gained at the level of the certificate or above. For example, Level 2 credits will count towards endorsement of a Level 1 NCEA, but Level 1 credits will not count towards endorsement of a Level 2 NCEA. Only one certificate endorsement can be awarded for each student in a calendar year. Course Endorsement Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course. Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve: 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and at least 3 of these credits are from externally assessed standards and at least 3 credits are from internally assessed standards. Note, the external requirement does not apply to Physical Education – this subject is fully internal.

A course endorsement is not a qualification. Course endorsements are only available in courses that have achievement standards. A course endorsement can be gained independently of a qualification. For example, a student may achieve a Merit endorsement for their Level 2 Mathematics course regardless of whether they achieve NCEA Level 2.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

University Entrance Requirements from 2014

University Entrance (UE) will be the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand

university. To be awarded UE you will need:

NCEA Level 3 plus

Three subjects – at Level 3 or above, made up of 14 credits each, in three approved

subjects plus

Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, 5 credits in reading AND 5 credits in writing

from specific standards plus

Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above from specific achievement standards, or

three specific numeracy unit standards

Once you have met the requirements for University Entrance it will appear on your Record of

Achievement. This does not guarantee entry to the degree or subjects of your choice

– in many cases, a higher level of achievement will be required. Many degrees at

polytechnics, institutes of technology and private training enterprises also require this entry

standard.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SUBJECTS

Step 1: Consider your:

Possible learning or career pathways

Step 2: With the above principles in mind, read all the subject descriptions on your option choice sheets. You also need to refer to the specific requirements for Year 11 students.

Step 3: Highlight or mark all possible subject choices as you read about them. Make sure you satisfy any pre-requisites.

Step 4: Discuss these pre-selections with your parents/guardians.

Step 5: Seek advice if necessary from:

Careers co-ordinator Deans

Academic Dean Subject teachers

Heads of Department

Step 6: After careful thought and discussion, complete your subject selection sheet.

ABILITY INTERESTS PATHWAYS

DIRECTION SUBJECT

CHOICE

How good are you at this subject?

Add to your ability your interests – what do you enjoy doing?

You may not know what work you would like to do – don’t worry.

Go through the possible subjects listed on your handout.

How easily do you understand it?

Reasons for enjoyment might be because of the work, the teacher, or because you seem good at it.

If you do know, or if you have ideas about what you might do, you can find out what subjects might be needed.

Highlight or mark alongside each possibility, and investigate those subjects thoroughly.

Your test marks and your work will help you estimate your ability.

+ You gain more satisfaction and probably reach a higher standard in your work if you are interested in it.

+ Staff are most willing to help you think this through.

=

Be careful not to under-rate your ability.

Tick your choices on the 7 line timetable sheet and return it to the office.

In 2017, all senior students will take 7 subject courses and one compulsory academic

mentoring course.

PURPOSE: This course is designed to train students in a range of acting skills and techniques. It helps

prepare students to student Theatre, Acting or the Performing Arts at tertiary level. It is designed to improve

performance confidence and skills. It also has a devising (group performance creation) aspect as this is often

part of creating theatre or film as a professional actor.

VOCATIONAL PATHWAY: Creative Industries, Service Industries

audition can be negotiated with HOD Performing Arts.

• A demonstrated reliability and willingness to work in groups.

• Students must be able to attend out of school rehearsals.

COURSE OUTLINE: This course focuses on developing a wide range of acting and performance skills from ancient theatre to modern approaches. It has a strongly practical aspect and the year is organised into three main projects - a short self-directed scripted piece, a group created devised performance and a public performance of a script.
