NZQA FEES (Due Friday 26 August 2016)

Senior student NZQA fees of $76.70 are due to the school by Friday 26th August. These fees are collected by the school on behalf of NZQA to make it easier for you to pay them. Any fees remaining unpaid after the 26th will need to be paid directly to NZQA and may incur a late fee. There is a financial assistance form available at the office if you have a community services card. This reduces

the fee to $20 per student or $30 per family.

SENIOR COURSE SELECTION

PATHWAY DAY TUESDAY 6 SEPTEMBER AND

PARENT EVENING WEDNESDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 2016 @ 6PM

In week 7 of term 3 we have two very important events in the senior school calendar happening. Firstly our senior

school timetable will be suspended on Tuesday 6 September for our current year 10, 11 and 12 students to participate

in our annual Pathway Day. This is a day where students are mentored in NCEA requirements specific to the year

level, and then have an opportunity to speak with teachers, HODs and Deans about courses available to them in

2017.

The College also invites parents/caregivers of ALL current year 10, 11 and 12 students to our Senior Course Selection

Evening. This is an event in which parents/caregivers can discuss 2017 senior subject choices with teachers, Deans,

Heads of Department and Senior Management of Heretaunga College.

We encourage all parents/caregivers to attend and bring along their child to discuss their subject options for next year.

Building upon what we have offered in 2016, a raft of new and exciting contextualised courses will be available for

your child to choose from. The evening begins at 6pm and takes place in the school Spine and Morgan Wing.

It is also an opportunity to learn about the process for subject selection, in particular how to complete subject selection

via the KAMAR parent portal link. This year it is expected that all students complete their subject selection Tuesday

13 September which is in week 8 of this term.

SENIOR SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS

The school examinations take place in week 8 of this term (Monday 12 September – Friday 16 September). A letter to

parents will be sent in the near future. We encourage all parents to support their young people in preparing effectively

for these exams. School exams are a compulsory aspect of all senior students’ education. If your child is unavailable

for these exams they will be expected to liaise with Ms Lucas, and will be provided with another opportunity to

participate in the exams outside the allocated schedule.

YEAR 10 NCEA INFORMATION EVENING

All parents/caregivers of students in year 10 are encouraged to attend an information evening on Thursday 18th August, starting at 6.30pm. Where possible students, should attend alongside their family. A separate invitation has been emailed home as well as a paper copy provided for each student. This evening is a very important opportunity to have your questions about NCEA answered as well as the chance to learn about the timetable structure for senior students at Heretaunga College. Please check your emails or ask your son/daughter for the invitation for further details.

MCAT – LEVEL 1 ALGEBRA EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT

The year 11 MCAT will take place on Tuesday 13 September 2016. This will be the first external assessment for the students doing the Algebra course. The students will require their NSN number and a blue pen, no calculators are allowed in this assessment. Students wishing to do MATAL 202 next year will have to pass this assessment and they should look out for extra tutorials that we will run closer to the time.

YEAR 12 COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Some of our Year 12 students have been participating in community projects. The photos below show our students

painting an alleyway in Upper Hutt.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE Special Olympics Indoor Soccer Team

(a parent’s account)

On 22 June the team played the game of their lives and won 7/6 in the final of the Indoor Special Olympics Soccer. They played and won against Naenae College who also played well.

As a parent I am so proud of our team not only because of their win, but also because of their superb sportsmanship in all their games. They have represented their school well and I believe that they should be acknowledged and congratulated for their efforts by the school, staff and students. The staff in the Learning Resource Centre are to be congratulated and acknowledged for their hard work, dedication and ongoing support that they have shown during this competition. The photo shows the cup that they won and the gold medals that were presented to each team member. Well done Heretaunga! Thank you Helen Montgomery (Mother of Laura Montgomery 13DH)

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – MATIU/SOMES ISLAND

Our volunteer group, the Eastbourne Forest Rangers, provides guiding services on Matiu/Somes Island.

Over recent years we have had the pleasure of guiding many Wellington school groups on their educational visits to the island including parties from Heretaunga College.

We now need more volunteer guides who enjoy working with young people, and who are available on week days.

Do you know of retirees or people within our community who may be interested in becoming a Matiu/Somes volunteer guide?

The expected time commitment is flexible and by negotiation. Full training is provided.

Please email or call Gerald Rawson, Secretary, Eastbourne Forest Rangers Incorporated on [email protected] or 027 242 9211.

LIBRARY NEWS

Have you checked out the online library catalogue yet?

Google Heretaunga College and open the school website. At the top right of the screen between “Virtual school tour”

and “Portal” there’s a button for the library. Click on that and the library catalogue will open. On the home page you’ll

see information about the library, links to websites, new books, book trailers or other YouTube clips and a link to our

Ebook platform. The carousel of books at the top left can be viewed in gallery view also. As a guest you can see what

books we hold in the library plus we have some selected websites catalogued. They are websites relating to topics

studied at school and are verified as being authoritative.

Students can login at the top right using their school logins. They can then see what books they have out, renew them,

reserve books and write reviews.

If you look at the quick lists and click on EPIC databases, you’ll see all the databases that are funded by the Ministry

of Education. Students will need to know the login username and password for access, which they will have to get

from us. Databases give access to newspaper and magazine articles and online reference books including The

Encyclopaedia Britannica. We encourage students to use these databases as they are considered as being print

sources. If you want to know more about the catalogue or library in general, feel free to ring the school extension 875

or call in after school. If any student wants help using the catalogue or the databases, encourage them to see me or

email me. [email protected]

STUDYLINK

Thinking about further study?

Students planning to continue study after they leave school have a lot of decisions to make. StudyLink’s website is a great place to visit to get you thinking about what it will cost to live and study. StudyLink can

help you work out if study is right for you and how you'll support yourself. How much money you may need to support

yourself could surprise you.

There are some really important decisions to make. A little effort, planning and commitment now can turn into exciting

jobs, higher wages and only having to pay back what you really needed to borrow to get there.

Once you’ve made the decision to study it’s a good idea to sign up to receive emails from StudyLink. This way you

won’t miss out on important information, like when to apply and documents you need to send.

Let's figure out what things you'll need for your tertiary education, and how you might pay for them.

Signing In/Out of College

Students are reminded to sign in with Ms Lucas (on

Mondays) or Mrs Thomas (Tues-Fri) if you are late to

school.

All students should have a note explaining their

lateness or parents should ring the College absence

line (939 9370 Ext 814).

When signing out to attend appointments students are

required to present a note to the office.

If a student is unwell they are required to come to the

student office where office staff will call a parent.

Uniform

A reminder to parents that a note MUST be provided if

there is an issue regarding uniform.

As the weather gets colder please note that only plain

black jackets are to be worn (NO hoodies or

sweatshirts). Plain black beanies can be worn term 2

and 3. Please name your students uniform. We can

return lost items quicker if they are named.

Panadol

We do NOT supply students with Panadol. If your

son/daughter requires pain relief whilst at school they

must bring it from home. The Student Office will store

this for your son/daughter in a locked medical box.
