Dong Quai: Uterine Tonic and Fertility Herb.

Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) is one of the most powerful females tonic and fertility herbs. Used since at least the first century, dong quai tonifies and strengthens the uterus by regulating hormonal control, improving uterine tone, and improving the timing of the menstrual cycle. In Asia dong quai is to womens healthas ginseng is to mens health.

In traditional Chinese medicine Dong Quai is referred to as a blood tonic as ithas a general effect on circulation. This could be helpful for women experiencing pale menstrual flow, absent periods, and weakness after periods (in TCM this is called blood deficient). It has also been shown to improve red blood cell counts. Dong quai is traditionally used for situations of stagnation (PCOS, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and fibroids) as it increases the blood flow to the reproductive system reducing congestion and pain.

Dong Quai may be helpful for:

Menstrual irregularitiesDelayed or absent menstruationShort periods with crampingStrengthening a weakened uterus

If you experience cramping and PMS during your period.Women who have stopped taking birth control pills and need to encourage a regular cycleLight or slow starting menstruationStagnant conditions

How Dong Quai Works

Dong quai is an herb used in TCM to help increase circulation to the reproductive system and nourish the blood.Dong Quai works by promoting blood flow to the pelvis where it will stimulate an absent or scanty period. It also nourishes the blood (it is in nearly all Chinese herbal blood-building formulas) and helps iron deficiency and anemia. One of

the best uses is it helps women who are not menstruating to invite there menstruation back. The increased circulation also helps to strengthen and balance the uterus. In rat studies it has been show to help build the uterus lining.

Dong Quai also has a relaxing effect on both the uterus and the nervous system. This can be helpful in situations such as PMS and cramping during your period. Its relaxing effects are just as powerful as well known herbs lavender, chamomile, or valerian root.

How to Use Dong Quai

We find that Dong Quai is best taken as the dried powdered root in capsules. The daily suggested use of Dong Quai is 3120mg per day, split into 3 separate doses

of 1,040mg. Dong Quai is best taken with food, during meals.

Safety & Side Effects

While Dong Quai is considered safe for most people, there are some instances this herb should not be used. Not to be used during pregnancy due to the stimulating effect of dong quai.Do not use during menstruation as it may increase the menstrual flow. Increased progesterone levels: Vitex has been shown to stimulate the formation of the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum is responsible for the secretion of progesterone. In a study of 45 women, 86% responded positively with normalized or significantly improved progesterone levels.

Reduces advancement of mild endometriosis: Vitex is used in Germany by gynecologists to treat mild endometriosis and prevent it from advancing.

May help prevent miscarriage: Vitex has a beneficial impact on progesterone levels. If miscarriages are due to low progesterone, vitex may help to normalize orincrease progesterone levels. Vitex may be considered safe to use during pregnancy, but make sure to consult with a healthcare practitioner when using this herb during pregnancy. Also make sure to read our Use During Pregnancy section below.

Relieves PMS: Clinical research has shown that vitex may be very beneficial forPMS symptoms, especially depression, headaches, rashes, acne, allergies and sensitivity of the breasts. In one study improvement of PMS by the first month was experienced by 32% of the women. By the third month 84% of the women experiencedimprovement of their PMS.

Lack of menstruation (amenorrhea): In a study of 15 women with amenorrhea, 65% had resumed a menstrual cycle by the sixth month of use. Progesterone levels also increased.

Irregular menstruation: Vitex has been shown to help balance both an absent menstrual cycle as well as aid a menstrual cycle that is heavy or too frequent.

Uterine cysts: Vitex has been found to be helpful at reducing cysts that are growing within the smooth muscle layer of the uterus.

Stabilization of menstruation after stopping birth-control pills: After discontinuing estrogen-containing birth control pills, vitex taken for several months has been shown to help stabilize the cycle and induce ovulation more quickly.

Helps stimulate milk production in new mothers: For over 2,000 years vitex has been used to help stimulate mothers milk. Begin using vitex right after birth andcontinue for 10 days or more as needed.

Acne: Several studies have shown an improvement in the skin with the use of vitex. Along with appropriate diet changes vitex may help acne.

Vitex can help basically any issues that one experiences that disappear once pregnancy begins and returns after breastfeeding ends.

How to Use Vitex

For optimal results vitex should be taken long-term. Clinical research shows that vitex may start working within 10 days, but full benefits may not be experienced until 6 months or longer. For PMS results are normally seen by the second menstrual cycle. But for lasting changes it may need to be taken for up to a year o

r more depending on how long the imbalance has been present.

Vitex is making fundamental changes in the delicate chemical chemistry of the body, this is why it takes some time to have an effect. Since vitex is a harmonizing and nourishing herb, it works behind the scenes to restore balance in a gentle way. Unlike a refined synthetic drug which forces the body to change, vitex works to nourish and support the system bringing about long term balance.

Vitex use & Dosage

Page 4: Herbs for Uterus

Vitex is generally suggested to be taken once a day in the morning on an empty stomach (half an hour before breakfast). If vitex is being used as part of a herbal blend containing other herbs, use as directed on the bottle. Vitex should beused all month long without a break.Capsules: 900-1,000mg a dayTincture: 60-90 drops a day

Which is the best vitex to take?Vitex comes in many forms, loose herbs, capsules, tea, tincture and powder. We find that capsules and tincture offer the most consistent results since it is easier to control the dosage. Many of the compounds needed from vitex are easily extracted in alcohol (tincture) versus water (tea). Vitex is very strong tasting, almost bitter, so I would not suggest making a tea unless you blend other herbswith it, that is one reason capsules are so convenient.

Does Vitex Work for Everyone?Vitex generally works for most adult women in their childbearing years (from age 18-perimenopause), but there are some cases where it may have no effect.Women who have less than ideal lifestyle habits will probably not experience the full effects of vitex. For those who have low energy reserves, weak immune systems, eat mostly processed foods, have been on antibiotics or steroids for a while  changes in diet and lifestyle are necessary prior to beginning the use of vitex. Without making these changes in addition to using vitex, you may not experience results.

Perimenopause is the time leading up to menopause. Perimenopause typically begins at the age of 40. As perimenopause progresses toward menopause, it is normal for menstrual cycles to become irregular and for hormone levels to fluctuate. Asovarian reserve diminishes and egg health declines, FSH levels may rise. For some women vitex may be helpful in maintaining regular cycles and lowering higher FSH levels, but vitex cannot reverse the aging process. It may or man not be effective for women in perimenopause, each woman is different. Vitex cannot bring back the menstrual cycle in women who have gone through menopause.

Safety & Side EffectsVitex has been used for over 2,000 years with no significant side-effects reported. Some minor and infrequent side-effects (1-2% of users may experience) have been nausea, gastrointestinal upset, skin reactions, and headache. Women with a h

istory of depression taking vitex for menstrual irregularity may experience an exacerbation of depressive symptoms.Even though it has been shown to have no interference with oral contraceptive vitex should not be used in conjunction with prescribed progesterone containing medication such as birth control pills in case it may interfere with their activity. Some women do experience a shift in their cycle when they first begin using vitex. The length of the menstrual cycle may shorten or lengthen temporarily beforeit finally stabilizes. This is just the body balancing itself out and is completely normal.

Safety ratingsGerman Commission E has approved the use of vitex for menstrual cycle irregularit

ies, premenstrual disturbances, and mastodynia. The Botanical Safety Handbook had categorized vitex as a class 1 herb. Class 1 herbs are herbs that can be safely consumed when used appropriately.

Vitex use During PregnancyIt is believed that vitexs ability to increase progesterone levels has explainedthe positive results seen by herbalists and midwives who used it to help prevent recurrent miscarriages in women. No studies on humans have been done yet supporting this, only traditional use. There have been reproductive toxicology studies with female rats where they were given up to 80 times the concentrated used cli

nically in humans, showing no difference in offspring compared with the rats given none.German research shows vitex can be taken safely through the end of the third month of pregnancy and may help prevent miscarriage. Vitex is still considered safe to take after the third month, but it is thought that it may stimulate lactation too early, so for this reason it is suggested to not continue after the thirdmonth of pregnancy. Also, during the third month of pregnancy is the time the placenta takes over progesterone production on its own, so vitex most likely wont be needed anyways. If you are deciding to use vitex during pregnancy, we suggest you consult with an herbalist or midwife for guidance and supervision.

SummaryVitex is a fantastic herb for fertility, helping with a range of issues such asPMS, low progesterone, lack of ovulation, irregular menstrual cycles, lack of amenstrual cycle, acne and so much more. Vitex offers many benefits but requirespatience and consistency of use. It should be used all month long and taken as one dose in the morning on an empty stomach.

White Peony: Fertility Herb Ally

White Peony is an herb that is a great ally to other fertility herbs. It works best when combined with other herbs for fertility. Sometimes Western herbalists cannot resist using a Traditional Chinese Medicine herb because it works so wonderfully. White Peony, also known as Chinese Peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is one ofthose. Peony also blends well with western herbs. Traditionally this herb has been used for painful menstruation, known as dysmennorhea, endometriosis, uterinefibroids and PCOS.

A constituent in Peony called paeoniflorin has exhibited smooth muscle relaxantability, analgesic qualities, as welll as anti-spasmodic activity.Peony is a beautiful plant, it is prized in many gardens. There are many different species of peony. Paoenia lactiflora itself has many different varieties of colored flowers. The flowers of the peony have a heavenly scent. Peony is one ofthe worlds most loved flowers. For medicinal purposes the root of this plant isused. It is dried to be boiled down to make a strong tea known as a decoction. The root can also be used to make an alcohol extraction known as a tincture or liquid extract.

Combined with Licorice Rt. for Dysmenorrhea TreatmentMost clinical trials have found that when Peony is combined with Licorice Rt. (Glycyrrhiza glabra), it performs better, especially for relaxing muscles, reducin

g painful menstruation, as well as lowering serum and free testosterone levels in women with PCOS. An open study of 100 women with uterine fibroids showed thatpeony reduced the size of fibroids, as well as reduced symptoms associated withtheir condition.Several other studies showed that peony, when combined with licorice in equal parts, greatly reduced painful menstruation by preventing prostaglandin production. The conclusion of this finding shows that this blends action plays a key rolein reducing primary dysmenorrhea, but also is very helpful in treating the underlying causes of secondary dysmenorrhea. In the 1970s, studies showed a link to why women experience painful menstrual cra

mps. Scientists discovered that women with menstrual cramps had high levels of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2). Prostaglandin F2 alpha is made by the uterus to stop progesterone production when there has been no implantation at the end of the menstrual cycle. Women with Dysmennorhea have been shown to produce 7 times more prostaglandin F2 alpha than women who do not. When the prostaglandin F2 alphais released into the blood stream in high levels it causes the uterus to spasm. This also creates a state of inflammation because PGF2 is a known inflammatory chemical in the body. Uterine cramping and inflammation is the cause of the pain. Scientists still do not know why the body produces more PGF2 in women with painful menstrual cramps. It is wonderful to know that a combination of peony and licorice may inhibit prostaglandin production, thus treating dysmennorhea.Famous western herbalist Susun Weed finds that Dong Quai combines well with peony, astragalus and licorice for dysmenorrhea. She notes that there are less sideeffects, such as stomach upset when Dong Quai is combined with these other herbs.

Combined With Dong Quai for Iron Deficient Anemia TreatmentPeony has been combined with Dong Quai by TCM practitioners for treatment of iron deficient anemia. According to TCM, blood deficiency is characterized by fatigue, depression, dizziness, constipation and pale complexion. Traditionally a decoction of peony and Dong Quai is given twice a week, for a month, to increase hematocrit levels.

Key Fertility Uses of Peony

You will find that peony is an ally to many other medicinal herbs. It is almostalways used in combination with other herbs for fertility.Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation). Has analgesic, spasmolytic actions; relaxing smooth muscles. Combines well with Licorice Rt for this.Moves the blood in the pelvic area, good for uterine stagnation including conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, & PCOS.Combines well with Dong Quai for treating anemia and endometriosis pain.Great to use for a vaginal steam bath for vulvar varicosities.

Traditional Suggested Usage -Dried herb decoction of root: 3-6g dried root decocted in 3 cups water. 1-3 times a day. -Liquid extract: 3-5mL, 1-2 times a day.

Combines well in equal parts with Licorice Rt. and Dong Quai.

*Do NOT use into pregnancy. Do not use if using blood thinning medications, if you have a history of bleeding problems, or if you have a history of heavy menstrual bleeding.

Yarrow: Ancient Fertility Herb in Your Backyard

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is one of my most loved herbal allies! It is one of the most versatile healing plants, ever. I could no longer hold back in sharing some fertility benefits this herb has. Yarrow grows virtually everywhere in North America. Any person interested in natural remedies should have this plant in their yard, or cupboard, in the form of loose dried plant parts, liquid extract

Page 7: Herbs for Uterus

, or oil. Because it grows pretty much everywhere, it is relatively inexpensiveand easy to obtain. Yarrow prefers to grow in well drained dry soils, usually in open meadows, as it prefers sun light. Because this herb is easy to find, it is a fertility aid that you can harvest yourself for personal use. Yarrow is a gentle, yet very effective plant. Because it is so versatile, gentle and effective, it combines well with other herbs for fertility.

Our ancestors have been using Yarrow for thousands of years. Fossilized Yarrow pollen has been found in burial caves dating back 60,000 years ago. Yarrow has arich history with humans for use in traditional healing, though it lacks scientific research. Despite a lack of scientific research, Yarrow has proven itself effective time-and-time again.

Balancing Act: An Herb of OppositesYarrow is cooling and warmingIt promotes circulation, yet is extremely astringent, stopping excessive blood flowDrying and moistening; promotes sweating and detoxification, but strengthens andtightens tissuesNormalizes opposing conditionsStimulates uterus to bring on menstruation, yet curbs heavy menstrual flow; effectively aiding in regulation of menstrual flow

Pain Relief for Painful Menstruation (Dysmennorhea)Yarrow has been used traditionally for painful menstrual cramps. It is antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory in action. This means it aids the muscles of the uterus to work efficiently without spasm and/or cramping up. Uterine cramping and inflammation is the cause of the pain associated with menstrual cramps. Yarrow relieves inflammation and congestion of the uterus, which aids in pain reduction, as well as proper circulation to the reproductive organs.

When using Yarrow to relieve menstrual cramps it is best to prepare in advance of the pain. A low dose in the form of a tea, or liquid extract everyday leadingup to menstruation may be best. Dosage may be increased during menstruation if n

eeded.

Reduce Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Yarrow is one of the best herbs to stop heavy bleeding due to uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or for women who have heavier than normal menstrual periods. It is important to address the cause of heavy menstrual bleeding, in addition to using Yarrow to stop heavy bleeding acutely.

Yarrow has been used to stop internal bleeding caused by uterine fibroids, endometriosis and ruptured ovarian cysts as well. This plant has been used traditionally by midwives to stop hemorrhage during miscarriage, or after childbirth. Yarrows ability to stop heavy blood flow is well documented and simply amazing!

Heavy Bleeding Infusion (Tea)Combine 2 parts dried Yarrow (astringent, reduces bleeding) 2 part Shepherds purse (astringent, reduces heavy uterine bleeding, prevents hemorrhage) 1 part dried Nettle leaf (high in iron, astringent, prevents hemorrhaging) 1 part Hibiscus flower (high in Vit. C, nice flavor addition) -Place a small handful of the mixture into a quart glass mason jar. Fill with just boiled water, cap tightly. Steep for 30-40 minutes. Drink 3-4 cups a day.

Yarrow is one of the ingredients in Slow Flow, a product we carry in our Natural Fertility Shop. Slow Flow is an herbal and nutrient specific blend to aid in heavy menstrual bleeding. Slow Flow is formulated for use only during heavy bleeding times.

Eliminate Pelvic CongestionMany women suffer from fertility issues where there is pelvic congestion, also referred to as stagnation. Conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, uterine fibroidsand ovarian cysts are all considered congestive states. Yarrow works to increase circulation to the reproductive organs and tissues. It also aids in pain reduction associated with endometriosis, uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts.

If you suffer from one of these stagnant fertility conditions, you may want to consider doing a daily hot or cold compress using a Yarrow infusion. A Yarrow compress may also be helpful when there is pain present, such as menstrual cramps. An oil from fresh Yarrow can be made and applied directly to the abdomen, or a massage oil blend using Yarrow essential oil can be used as well.

Yarrow Compress1. Place 1/8 cup of dried Yarrow flowers, stems and leaves into a large tea ball or bag. Place in a large stainless steel or Pyrex bowl. You could also use a large stainless steel stock pot. Cover with boiling water and let steep for 15-30minutes. Let the liquid cool to your liking. Remove 1 cup of the tea to drink if you would like.

2. Place a cotton rag or old clean cloth in the tea after it has reached desired temperature.

3. Wring it out so that it still holds quite a bit of liquid, but is not dripping. Be sure you do not use a cloth that you care about too much, the tea may stain it.

4. Place an old towel or blanket on the floor or underneath where you are goingto lie down.

5. Fold wet cloth so that it can be applied to the lower abdomen. Lie down in acomfortable position on your back. Place the cloth on your bare abdomen. Let it

sit there for 7-15 minutes. You may put the cloth back in the liquid and repeatstep 3-5 several times. You can also put plastic on top of the cloth and put a hot water bottle, or other hot pack on top of that to keep it warm.

Note: Some women with endometriosis report that using hot compress cause their condition to be painful, so it may be best to do a warm-to-cool compress instead.

Stimulate Menstrual FlowYarrow is a traditional tonic to stimulate the uterus to bring on menses. This works well for a boggy, weak uterus. Yarrow aids in toning the muscles of the uterus, as well as increasing muscular activity of the uterus which serves to initiate menstrual flow. The stimulation of the muscles of the uterus aid in the shedding of the endometrium, stimulating regular menstrual cycles in the absence of

pregnancy. This is a wonderful herb for women with absent periods, also known as Amennohrea. If you have not had a period for a long time, or if your period islate and you know you are not pregnant, Yarrow may aid in bringing on menses. *Do NOT use Yarrow if you think you may be pregnant.

Traditional Suggested Dosage of YarrowDaily Usage

Infusion (tea): 1 tsp. of dried leaves and/or flowers per cup of water. Steep in almost boiling water for 10 minutes. Drink 3 cups daily.

Page 9: Herbs for Uterus

Liquid extract (tincture): 20 drops, 3 times a day.

Because Yarrow is a uterine stimulant, it is important not to use this herb after ovulation if you think you may be pregnant. This herb is best used in preparation for pregnancy, or after pregnancy and breastfeeding to tone the uterus. Mayalso be used to heal stagnant fertility conditions and promote regular menses.

Fertility Herbal Tonic: Red Raspberry Leaf

Red Raspberry (Rubus idaeus, spp) is one of the most well known and most loved f

ruits in the world, but in the herbal and midwifery world its leaves are also adearly treasured herbal remedy for women of childbearing age. Raspberry Leaf ismost popular as a tonic for pregnancy and labor, but is it also excellent as a nutritive and tonic in preparation for pregnancy. It is also one of the main herbs that is considered safe in most cases to use during pregnancy in preparation for labor. But, why wait until you are pregnant to reap the benefits of this wonderful leaf?

Raspberry leaves are high in Carotenoids, citric acid, tannins, vitamin A, B complex, C, and E. They also have an easily assimilated form of iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and silica.

Raspberry leafs main medicinal actions include: astringent, tonic, parturient, re

frigerant and anti-emitic. Below is a break-down to help you understand what these medicinal actions mean in relationship to this plant.

Astringent: Astringent herbs cause contraction and shrinkage of internal and external body tissues. They also help to prevent hemmorage or excessive bleeding. Red Raspberry leaves help prevent hemmorage after miscarriage or childbirth. Thetannins contribute to healthy digestive function, this herb is wonderful for alleviating diarrhea.

Tonic: Its constituent fragrine is an alkaloid that helps to tone the muscles of the pelvic region, including the uterus. This is a wonderful action for improving uterine health where there is uterine weakness present. This may help prevent miscarriage when used in preparation for pregnancy.

Parturient: Promotes labor. A recent study showed that 63% of midwives in the United States use this herb to stimulate labor. Although it is used quite commonly by midwives to stimulate labor it is used more often to prepare the womans uterus for the hard work of labor.

Refrigerant: Cools the body down, may slightly reduce fever. Note: this action only takes place if there is an actual fever present.

Anti-emitic: May reduce morning sickness by easing nausea, may prevent vomiting.

Raspberry leaf works to encourage the uterus to let go and function without tension.- Susun S. Weed, Author of Wise Woman Herbal For The Childbearing Year.

Red Raspberry for Fertility IssuesThis herb may be helpful for the following conditions where there is menstrual bleeding issues or uterine weakness present. It would be best to use this plant to help heal and prepare for pregnancy, but should be avoided after ovulation ifyou are actively trying to conceive.

Recurrent Miscarriage: If you have experienced miscarriage due to uterine weakness.

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: The astringent properties of this herb help to stop heavy bleeding. It is also high in iron which may help prevent anemia due to heavy menstrual bleeding.

Poor Egg Quality/Nutritional Deficiency: This herb is very nutritive and may help to boost overall nutrition.

General Preparation for Pregnancy: If you are thinking of trying to get pregnant this herb may be a great ally for preparing your uterus and boosting overall nutritional intake. It is also safe for men to use as well as it does not containany hormone like substances.

Uterine Trauma: If you have had surgery to remove fibroids, endometrial tissues, cysts or have had uterine prolapse, previous uterine hemmorage or a Cesarean section this herb may help your recovery and healing of the uterus. The toning effect of Red Raspberry leaf helps the uterus to recover more quickly.

Traditional Usage of Red Raspberry LeafThis herb is best taken as an infusion (herbal tea). Drink 1 cup, 1-3 times a day. Pour 1 cup of dried red raspberry leaf into a quart mason jar, fill with freshly boiled water, cover and let steep for at least 15-30 minutes. For a stronger infusion, steep for 3-4 hours. You can purchase loose red raspberry leaf here

Red Raspberry leaf is also sold as a tincture (liquid drops) and tablets, please

follow manufacturer recommended dosage for the product purchased.

It has been shown extremely safe to consume everyday in preparation for pregnancy as well as throughout pregnancy to prepare for labor and birth.

Slight Caution: The following information is based on my personal experiences as a practitioner. In a couple of clients I have worked with, with a history of recurrent miscarriage due to an irritable or weak uterus, I suggest that it may be bet to use red raspberry for pregnancy preparation (3-6 months prior to trying toconceive) and avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy. The effect of this herb on the uterus appears to be too much for some women. It is fine to startdrinking it again in the 2nd trimester, once pregnancy is established.

Simple At Home Infusion Preparations

Red Raspberry leaves have a mild flavor as opposed to other herbal teas and combine well with other herbs.

Fertility Herb: Motherwort

Midwives and herbalists revere Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) as a sacred plantfor female health, on both a physical and emotional level. Motherwort is in theLamiacea family, which is the mint family. The name Leonurus cardiaca has giventhis plant its other common names Lions ear, Lions tail, and Lion heart. The wordcardiaca, indicates its use as a traditional heart remedy.

Herbalists use the flowering tops, leaves and stalk as medicine for a variety of female reproductive ailments. In many ways Motherwort is one of the greatest he

aling herbs for women. Women are emotional by nature, they endure many ups and downs while striving to figure out the responsibility and gift of being able to bring another life into this world, but also nurture the lives of others. Motherwort supports this process, prepares the uterus for childbirth while calming anxiety and stress, and supporting the heart. This herb is very effective when taken for a few months, doing its job, and then allowing the woman to move on without it.

Hethir and I were discussing Motherwort the other day for some herbal blends welike. We talked about how easy it is to grow in your own garden. Because it is i

n the mint family, it is hearty and spreads in the garden easily; this can be either burdensome or a blessing, depending on how much you would like to grow. The Motherwort I have grown, loved to spread its little seeds all around each autumn, creating new baby plants. I have seen herbalists let these seedlings grow until strong enough to transplant and make an entire garden of just Motherwort plants. If you are interested in making your own medicinal extracts or vinegar of this plant, growing your own Motherwort patch is a great idea! It loves full sun and shade. It can grow quite tall, over 6ft or more. This plant is so delightful to grow on your own, that I urge you to try growing it this next spring!

Motherwort is commonly used to treatAmenorrhea (absent period/menstrual cycle)Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation)Depression, anxiety, stress associated with the menstrual cycle, or in lifeUterine FibroidsOvarian CystsEndometriosisPMS

Uterine TonicMotherwort has been found to mildly stimulate the uterus, while also aiding theuterus to work efficiently in the case of bringing on menses for women with absent menstrual cycles, as well as those with painful periods. This herb contains the alkaloid leonurine, which has a relaxing effect on smooth muscle.

Painful MenstruationIt is a powerful herb that brings quick relief to women who have painful periods with symptoms like anxiety, rapid heart beat, hot flash, headache, dizziness, stress, and difficulty sleeping. This herb is very effective at reducing uterinemuscle spasm, cramping and improving uterine tone.

Traditionally Motherwort was used topically as an infused oil or as a poultice (fresh herb macerated as a pack) placed on the abdomen. This is usually done with some type of liquid, it could be alcohol, vinegar, witch hazel or hot water. The pack was placed on the abdomen to relieve menstrual cramping.

Heart Health for Long Term Fertility Health

Motherwort is nourishing to the heart, stimulating new capillary growth. A healthy heart enables our entire body, including the reproductive system to receive healthy, oxygenated blood. In a study of 105 patients, 94.5% of them showed an improvement in blood viscosity and reduction in fibrinogen content (clotting). This is important for proper blood flow. Hypertension is a risk factor for uterinecancer, Motherwort is extremely helpful in supporting proper heart and uterine health, which may help to prevent uterine cancer.

Because one of the main symptoms of hyperthyroidism is heart palpitations, manyherbalists suggest Motherwort for treating hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism maylead to infertility if not taken care of.

Triple Goddess Blend for Ovarian Cysts

Famous western herbalist Susun S. Weed, swears by a wonderful blend of 3 herbs she calls the Triple Goddess, for reducing ovarian cyst. This tincture blend is a Traditional Chinese Medicine blend. Equal parts of tincture made form fresh flowering tops of Maidenwort (Stellaria media), Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) andCronewort also known as Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). She suggests 1-2 dropperfuls, 3 times a day to dissolve ovarian cysts.

Nicholas Culpepper 1616-1654 said, there is no better herb to drive away melancholy vapours from the heart, to strengthen it and make the mind cheerful. Culpepper is famous among herbalists as a wonderful botanist, herbalist and herbal educat

or. He wrote many herbal books including Complete Herbal.

Traditional Suggested Useage of MotherwortMotherwort has a very bitter taste and is most often tinctured into a liquid extract. It also is nice taken as a vinegar. Some brave people who love bitters dolike to place a bit of this herb in an infusion.

Those who dare to drink this as an infusion: 1-2 tsp. of dried herb to 1 cup ofwater. Cover with boiling water, steep for 10-15 minutes. Drink 3 cups a day.

Dosage of liquid extract: 5-25 drops a day, 3 times a day.

Dosage of liquid extract for painful periods and PMS: 10-25 drops every 5 minutes and then every 2 hours, for next few days, or until pain has subsided. This method should only need to be used this way for up to 4 months in a row.

If you are trying to conceive, it may be best to only use this herb as needed. If you suspect pregnancy, avoid this herb. *Do not use this herb into pregnancy because it has a uterine tonic and effect, stimulating mild uterine contractions. It is best used in preparation and healing prior to pregnancy. Motherwort is best not used during heavy menstrual bleeding, unless advised by a qualified herbalist or naturopathic doctor.

Maca, Wonder Herb For Fertility

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root-like cruciferous vegetable from the Andes of Peru. It grows in some of the harshest farmlands in the world, where the soil isrich in volcanic minerals, experiencing freezing temperatures, fierce winds andintense sunlight. Maca is the only plant known in the world that can grow and thrive at such a high altitude and in such harsh weather. For more than two millennia, native Peruvians have used maca root as food and medicine to promote fertility, endurance, energy, vitality, and sexual virility.

Stories of macas fertility supporting effects have been passed down through history in a story that took place in the 1500s. Soon after the Spanish Conquest in South America occurred the Spanish began to experience poor health and infertility

in themselves as well as in their livestock. This was due to the high altitudeof the Andes. The native Peruvians recommended that they feed their livestock and themselves maca. The results were so dramatic that many of the first written records ever kept for the Andean region were passages about maca. There are alsohistorical notes recording that the Conquistadors began demanding to be paid inmaca instead of gold.

How Maca Works

Maca root is an adaptogenic herb that has been shown in studies to improve ferti

lity in both men and women.Containing 31 different minerals and 60 different phytonutrients, maca is a nourishing food for the endocrine system, aiding both the pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands (all involved in hormonal balance.) Maca has the ability to affectkey hormones in both women and men without containing hormones itself.

Maca has been scientifically researched for the use of increasing fertility since 1961 and has been shown to contain specific compounds called glucosinolates which directly can affect fertility for both men and women. These alkaloids are responsible for macas ability to support hormonal balance.

Benefits of maca:Supports hormonal balanceIncreases energy, stamina, and mental claritySupports the thyroidSupports normal sexual function

AdaptogenicMaca also has adaptogenic properties which means it helps to strengthen the body so it is able to better resist disease and stress, support the adrenal glands and balances the bodys functions. In order for an herb to be considered an adaptogen it must be non-toxic or harmless to any organ of the body and must be able to be ingested for long periods of time safely. Maca is classified as an adaptogen.

Endocrine system tonicOne of macas main actions is to stimulate and nourish the hypothalamus which regulates the pituitary gland, acting as a tonic for the hormone system. When the pituitary gland functions optimally, the entire endocrine system becomes balanced, because the pituitary gland controls the hormone output of the other three glands.

Promotes Hormonal BalanceIn women, maca works by controlling estrogen in the body. Estrogen levels that are high or low at the wrong time can keep a woman from becoming pregnant or keep her from carrying to term. Excess estrogen levels also cause progesterone levels to become too low. Taking maca may help to increase the progesterone levels wh

ich are essential to carrying a healthy pregnancy.

Estrogen in men produces erectile dysfunction or lack of libido, low sperm count, and lowered production of seminal fluid. Studies have shown that men who use maca may experience an increased libido and an increase in sperm health.

In one study with rats and maca, it was found that animals given maca powder showed multiple egg follicle maturation in females (important for ovulation) and the males had significantly higher sperm production and motility rates.

Supports normal sexual functionIn a human study of 9 men who were given gelatinized maca for 4 months at 1,500  3,000 mg a day experienced an increase in libido, sperm count, mobillity of sper

m, increased DHEA levels, decreased anxiety and stress, lowered blood pressure, balanced iron levels and an increase in adrenal androgens.

How to Use MacaWhen purchasing maca you want to make sure the product you are using has only maca root in it, not leaves or stem. Maca is available in powder, capsules or tincture. It is also available in varying strengths.

Maca powder: Maca powder comes in two forms. Plain maca powder that is just powdered maca root or gelatinized maca. Gelatinization is a completely vegetarian pr

Page 15: Herbs for Uterus

ocess that removes the starch from maca to improve assimilation and increases the concentration.

We find that gelatinized maca is easier to digest than the plain powder and is also more cost effective since it is more concentrated. The studies mentioned above used gelatinized maca. Gelatinization does not refer to gelatin, and no animalderived ingredients are incorporated into this process.

Maca powder can be added to juice, smoothies, yogurt or baked goods. It has a nice malty flavor which goes well with foods. I like to add it to all of my smoothies.

Maca capsules: Maca capsules are a convenient way to get maca daily. Many people will find using the maca capsules to be easier since they can be taken at any time with some water.

Maca tincture: A tincture of maca root is a liquid extract of the medicinal properties of maca. Maca tincture can be taken with water, in juice or added to smoothies.

DosageGeneral suggested usage is 500-3000 mg a day. To obtain desired results, maca needs to be taken regularly. It can be taken in one dose or throughout the day.

Safety & Side EffectsMaca is a beneficial herb that has been used for thousands of years and consumed everyday as a food and medicine by the Peruvians. Based on its long history ofuse as a food it appears to be very safe. Toxicity studies (conducted at Product Safety Labs of East Brunswick, N.J.) showed absolutely no toxicity and no adverse pharmacological effects. In a small amount of women, some using plain maca root (not gelatinized) experienced stomach upset. Some women experience spotting or a change in their menstrual cycle when they first begin using maca. This is normal and a sign that the body is beginning to balance the hormonal system.

Maca Use During PregnancyAs a safety precaution most manufacturers state that their supplements should no

t be used during pregnancy. There have been no studies on the use of maca during pregnancy. Acute toxicity studies and cytotoxicity evaluations have demonstrated absence of any evidence of potential toxicity of maca. The Peruvians have been consuming maca as a food for thousands of years. Since there have been no studies on the use of maca during pregnancy we can not state that it is proven safe to use during pregnancy. Please do your own research and make a personal decision on the use of maca during your pregnancy.

Summary

As you can see from all the actions maca can have on the body, it is a wonderful fertility superfood and tonic. Maca can complement any fertility program and should be used on a daily basis for best results. It can also be used in conjuncti

on with other fertility herbs and supplements.

Black Cohosh Benefits the Menstrual Cycle, Pain and Uterine Health

Black cohosh (formerly known as Cimicifuga racemosa, now Actaea racemosa) is the

Page 16: Herbs for Uterus

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/herbs-for-uterus 16/21

most popular herb for perimenopausal complaints. Black cohosh also has lesser-known, yet wonderful benefits as an herb for women in their childbearing years. It has been widely used for hundreds of years for pain related to the menstrual cycle.

Traditional Use of Black CohoshBlack cohosh is indigenous to North America, specifically the east coast US, from the very southern part of Ontario, Canada, to Georgia and as far west as Missouri down to Arkansas. This herb was widely used by eastern Native American tribes including the Cherokee, Iroquois, Penobscot and MicMac. These tribes #1 use of Black cohosh was for the relief of pain. In 1749 von Linne describes it as an herb for female debility and pain relief, as well as a cardiac (heart) tonic anduterine tonic. It appears in botanical literature as early as 1680. Black cohosh was used extensively by the Eclectics for womens muscular pains, uterine pain, tender uterus, irregular pains, and dysmenorrhea. This herb was also widely usedas a mild sedative.

Black cohosh is quite a lovely plant. This plant has long, white delicate flowering tops, with strong roots. I have successfully grown Black cohosh in Portland, OR. Though it is indigenous to the eastern sates, it is not an invasive plant and may be cultivated elsewhere. I was always so excited when it flowered, it has creates beautiful contrast in the garden. Its long white flowering tops stand out. It goes by other common names, Black bugband, Black snakeroot and fairy candle.

Medicinal Benefits of Black CohoshBlack cohosh is not a nutritive herb to be used long-term. This plant has specific medicinal action. Many herbalists find that taking it long-term is not advised. Because of its popularity for menopausal complaints, many women feel that itis fine to consume long-term, this is not the case. Black cohosh should only beused for up to 6 months. This suggested length of time of use would be the samefor women who are choosing to use it for any sort of fertility related ailment. It is best to only choose this herb after careful evaluation and consideration. It would probably be a good idea to seek the advice of a skilled herbalist before choosing to self-medicated with this plant.

Uses for Fertility

Ammenorhea (absent period): Black cohosh has been used for hundreds of years tohelp bring on a menstrual period. Aids in tone, regular function and shedding of the uterine lining.

Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation): This plant is very anti-inflammatory and wonderful at reducing spasm in both the smooth muscles, but also the skeletal muscles associated with menstrual cramping pain that radiates to the lower back anddown the thighs. It is best used a few days prior to the onset of menstruation, and through menstruation if necessary. It combines well with other herbs for pain like Crampbark or Blackhaw.

Relief of uterine contractions associated with threatened miscarriage: While this herb is not recommended for regular use in pregnancy, it has been used success

fully in some cases to prevent pre-term uterine contractions in a threatened miscarriage. It is always used in combination with other herbs to help prevent miscarriage and should never be self-prescribed for miscarriage. The success of using Black Cohosh is dosage dependant, only a skilled midwife or herbalist would be able to determine the best amount to use and it what combination with other herbs.

Uterine irritability: For women with a uterus that feels inflamed or irritatedthroughout the month, Black cohosh may be an effective option in relaxing the uterus, reducing inflammation of the uterus.

Page 17: Herbs for Uterus

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/herbs-for-uterus 17/21

Uterine and ovarian nueralgia (nerve pain): Excellent for relieving pain, shooting, pinched or inflammatory conditions causing nerve pain.

Congested pelvic conditions: Because it is an excellent anti-inflammatory herb and heart tonic, it promotes healthy blood flow to the pelvic area. Aids in healing of uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis.

Premenstrual migraine headache: Has been shown to greatly reduce migraine headache, best used at least 3 days prior to menstruation to help prevent migraine, but may also be used acutely to treat migraine.

Ovarian pain: Whether it be ovarian cyst pain or mittelschmertz (ovulation pain), this plant has proven to be effective at reducing ovarian pains.

Weak pelvic floor muscles, uterine prolapse: According to Susun S. Weed in her book Down There Sexual and Reproductive Health, Black cohosh tincture taken at 1dropperful a day for 3 months, will aid in toning pelvic floor muscles. This helps to reverse organ prolapse, in addition to Kegels, or other pelvic floor therapies.

Estrogenic Action Debate: There have been several studies performed using Blackcohosh, to determine if it will increase estrogen and therefore be a threat to estrogen fueled cancer. Initial studies suggest an estrogenic action. More recent

studies have shown it has no effect on estrogen, LH, FSH, prolactin, SHGB or edometrial proliferation (increase in endometrial cells within the uterus).

Uses for PregnancyUsing Black cohosh during pregnancy should only be done under the skilled care of your midwife or herbalist. Never self prescribe Black cohosh during pregnancy. I wanted to share with you the benefits, so you know its uses during pregnancyas well. It is important to know a plant well prior to using it. Only a skilledmidwife or herbalist can suggest the correct dosage for your particular situation.

Dysfunctional contractions during labor: Sometimes contractions in labor are inefficient, slow down or are irregular. Black cohosh may be give to help promote r

egular contractions.

Partus preparator (preparation for labor in last 2 weeks of pregnancy): Many midwives suggest to pregnant women in their care, to take liquid extract of this herb for the last 2 weeks of pregnancy to help prepare the uterus for labor. It may also help to stimulate labor, speed it up or help to make contractions more efficient.

Helps to maintain contractions after birth:This is very important to prevent hemorrhage. For some women, they may find their uterus is tired and not contracting efficiently after the birth of her baby. Black cohosh may help to sustain contractions The uterus needs to contract back to down pre-pregnancy size, or thereabout. This is hard work for the uterus.

Additional ways it has been used for pregnancy: -Reduces reflux, aiding in morning sickness -Its relaxing effects help the birth canal and perineum to relax, thus reducing the chance of tearing at birth. -Used for pregnant mothers with insomnia -Used for hysteria

Other Virtues (uses) of This PlantBlack Cohosh has been used for these other ailments. As the herbalist Jim McDona

Page 18: Herbs for Uterus

8/9/2019 Herbs for Uterus

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/herbs-for-uterus 18/21

ld pointed outplants have more than one virtue.

-Menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, night sweat, heart palpitation, headache, sweating, nervousness, insomnia, irritability, depression) -Chronic fatigue syndrome -Whooping Cough -Lowered muscle function -Dull-achy inflammatory pain of any sort -Rheumatoid arthritis -Heart tonic -Sciatica-General coughs from colds, ect. -Osteoperosis

Traditional Suggested UsageA lower dosage is considered quite efficient in most cases.

Tincture of fresh root is best. Though tincture of dried root is okay as well. Small dosage 5-15 drops, a day at most.If using dried root in a capsule: 40 to 200mg a day.

Do NOT use past 6 months, unless directed by your naturopath or herbalist.

The liquid tincture is very strong tasting, I find it to be pretty nasty. I like

to mix it in a bit of juice and swallow all at one time (take a shot). Black cohosh combines well with many other herbs!

Be aware that this herb may have a strong effect on mood and disposition. For melancholic type women, it seems to help make them happier and content. For womenwith a happy and content disposition, it may make them brooding and withdrawn. Taking too high of a dosage may cause a dull achy headache. There are no know drug-interactions with Black cohosh. Those with liver disease may want to avoid this herb, as it has had a couple of reports of hepatoxicity (toxic to the liver),though they were isolated incidence with other factors involved, it is best to be safe.

Royal Jelly, Bee Pollen & Bee Propolis for Fertility

Bees are amazing creatures. They produce a wide variety of substances, many of w

hich have been found to have great health benefits for not only the bees, but humans as well. Bee keeping and Apitherapy has been done for thousands of years, dating back around 6000 years ago. Apitherapy is the use of bee products honey, propolis, bee pollen and royal jelly for healing.

Many people are curious as to these health benefits reported by thousands of people and most notably by bee keepers themselves. With the variety of bee products out there it can be confusing to know what the difference is between them, what their health benefits are and which product is best for certain health issues.Since this website is focused on fertility I am only going to list general infor

mation on the differences between Royal Jelly, Bee Pollen, and Bee Propolis andtheir health benefits in relationship to fertility and fertility issues.

Royal JellyRoyal Jelly is a substance that is secreted by nurse worker bees glands. The secretion is known as royal jelly and it is the main food source for the first 3 days of the larva. One larva that is to be the Queen Bee is fed only royal jelly its entire life. This exclusive feeding triggers the full development of her ovaries which is needed to lay the millions of eggs she will lay in her lifetime. The Queen matures in 5 days and weighs double that of a worker bee. A worker bee only lives to be 30-45 days old, but the Queen bee lives to be 5 to 6 years old.The queen also lays in one season around 250,000 eggs and in peak season she may lay up to 2000 eggs a day. This may have something to do with the extremely high nutritional content of the Royal Jelly which is this Queens exclusive diet.Royal Jelly is rich in amino acids (29 to be exact), lipids, sugars, some vitamins, fatty acids and most importantly, proteins. It contains ample levels of iron and calcium. Royal Jelly also contains acetylcholine, which is needed to transmit nerve messages from cell to cell. Regular consumption of high-quality Royal Jelly has been shown to help balance hormones. This makes it beneficial to thoseindividuals that suffer from a hormonal imbalance, as it helps to provide support to the endocrine system. It may also help with problems that are related to hormonal imbalance. A study done in Japan and published in 2007 shows that Royal Jelly has the propensity to mimic human estrogen, which may help those that suffer from low estrogen levels. Estrogen is essential for healthy bone formation and

healthy gene expression, and is vital for a healthy menstrual cycle. This study also showed potential for increased size of uterine cells in the rats studied. While there may need to be more studies done to show full potential of Royal Jelly consumption on uterine health this is exciting potential for women with weakuterine muscles or thin uterine lining due to long-term hormonal birth control use.

Royal Jelly may be beneficial for the following: To increase libido Support egg and sperm health Diminish and reduce the signs of aging To reduce inflammation caused by illness or injury To naturally boost the bodies immune system

Bee PollenAs worker bees leave the hive for the day they go out and gather bee pollen andbring it back to the hive. They pack the pollen into granules with its own enzymes, some honey or nectar. Keep in mind that for each pack of bee pollen sold each one may be vastly different and this is because of the environment in which the bee was collecting the pollen. Different flowers contain different chemical constituents unique to that flower. Some bees are kept near farming areas that only contain one kind of flower rather than a diversity of them. So to obtain a wide variety of benefits from the bee pollen you will want to choose one that is from either a local organic source of wildflowers or an organic farm. Choose onlyhigh quality bee pollen. If you choose one that you are not sure of, call the company and ask them what kind of flowers the bees are visiting each day. Is the s

ource organic or wild? If not, if they are near an industrial farm your pollen has the potential to contain harmful chemicals like pesticides, herbacides or fertilizers. All of these are known to contain endocrine disruptors which are linked to fertility problems.Because bee pollen varies from source to source depending on time of year, location, ect. it is hard to pinpoint exact nutritional benefits as they may be different with each batch. Bee pollen does contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, proteins and amino acids. It is said that bee pollen contains antihistamine properties which may reduce allergies.Bee pollen has been reported to have great results in boosting immunity, fertili
