    Pattern: Yin deficiency of the Heart and Kidneys.

    Indications: Irritability, palpitations with anxiety, fatigue,

    insomnia with very restless sleep, inability to think or

    concentrate for even short periods of time, nocturnal

    emissions, forgetfulness, dry stools, a red tongue with little

    coating, and a thin, rapid pulse. There may also be sores of

    the mouth and sores of the tongue, low-grade fever, andnight sweats.

    This formula and Restore the Spleen Decoction (gui pitang) are both used in treating conditions marked by

    insomnia, palpitations, and forgetfulness.

    However, the latter formula is indicated for concurrentqi and blood deficiency marked by reduced appetite,

    loose stools, a pale tongue, and a thin, frail pulse.

    This formula is for blood and yin deficiency with

    irritability, a red tongue with little coating, and a thin,rapid pulse.

    Pattern: Restless organ disorder (zang zao); injury to

    the Heart yin, Liver qi, and Spleen qi. Indications: Disorientation, frequent attacks of

    melancholy and crying spells, inability to control

    oneself, restless sleep (sometimes with night sweats),

    frequent bouts of yawning, a red tongue with a sparse

    coating, and a thin, rapid pulse. In severe cases, the

    behavior and speech become abnormal. This is called

    restless organ disorder (zang zao), an emotional

    condition that is generally due to excessive worry,

    excessive anxiety, or excessive pensiveness.

    dizziness, a swollen tongue with a white, thick, greasy

    coating, and a slippery pulse.

    CAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS: The

    improper use of this formula can lead to excessivethirst and a dry throat. Unless modified, it is

    contraindicated for cases with cough associated with

    Lung yin deficiency.

    distention of the chest, a bitter taste in the mouth, slight

    thirst, a greasy, yellow tongue coating, and a rapid pulse

    that is either slippery or wiry.

    Hai Zao, Kun Bu, Zhe Bei Mu, Ban Xia, Du Huo,

    Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Qing Pi, Chen Pi, Lian Qiao,

    Gan Cao Pattern: Qi goiter from stagnation of dampness,

    phlegm, qi and blood.

    Indications: Masses in the center of the neck which

    are rock-like in hardness, immobile, cause no changein the color of the skin, and do not ulcerate. Tongue

    has thin greasy coating, pulse is wiry and slippery.

    and ascendent yin.

    Indications: Coughing, profuse clear sputum, excess

    Three-Seed Decoction to Nourish One's

    Parents (san zi yang qin tang)

    Bai Jie Zi, Su Zi, Lai Fu Zi

    Pattern: Cold in the Lungs with food stagnation.

    Indications: Coughing and wheezing, copious sputum,

    focal distention in the chest, loss of appetite, digestive

    difficulties, a white, greasy tongue coating, and a

    slippery pulse.

    Pattern: Lingering cough due to wind attacking the

    Lungs.

    Indications: Coughing with slight chills and fever, or no

    chills and fever, an itchy throat, a thin, white tongue

    coating, and a moderate, floating pulse.

    This is wind attacking the Lungs. This presentationusually occurs as the sequela to an externally-

    contracted disease that has been treated, but in which

    the cough persists.

    CAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS: This formula

    has a tendency to dry and should therefore not be used

    in treating coughs associated with yin deficiency. It was

    designed for treating wind-cold and should not be used

    without modification in treating coughs due to heat in theLungs.

    Special Pill (xiao huo luo dan) C: Zhi Cao Wu, Fu Zi,

    Tian Nan Xing, Mo Yao, Ru Xiang, Di Long

    Pattern: Wind-stroke or Wind-cold-damp painful

    obstruction Indications: Chronic pain, weakness, and numbness

    (especially in the lower extremities) due to wind-stroke.

    Also for fixed or migrating pain in the bones and joints

    with reduced range of motion due to wind-cold-damp

    painful obstruction. In both conditions, the symptoms

    are aggravated by cold. The tongue coating is white

    and moist.

    Pattern: Channel stroke of head and face, d/t WindPhlegm, possibly with underlying Deficiency of Wei Qi.

    Indications: Sudden facial paralysis with deviation of

    the eyes and mouth and facial muscle twitch.

    CAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS:

    Contraindicated during pregnancy. Avoid using for

    long periods of time, due to toxic ingredients.

    Warming, best used for cold-damp type Wind-Phlegm.

    motor dysfunction of the body or development of facial

    asymmetry that occurs over a period of a few hours to

    a few days, severe dizziness and vertigo, sudden loss

    consciousness.

    also be numbness, twitching and spasms in the

    extremities, or hemiplegia.

    coughing and wheezing with thick, viscous sputum; or focaldistension and stifling sensation in the chest and epigastrium;

    or dizziness, vertigo or tinnitus.

    In each of these cases there is constipation, a yellow

    thick and greasy tongue coating, and a slippery rapidand forceful pulse. There may also be facial tics,

    insomnia, or very strange dreams, sudden, deep pain

    in the joints that is difficult to describe, nodules in the

    neck, or a choking sensation.

    **Lapis Micae seu Chloriti is sweet, salty, and neutral;

    it scours Phlegm, directs Qi downward, calms

    wheezing, and stops palpitations.

    CAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS:

    Contraindicated during pregnancy and post partum.Caution in weak patients. Do not use in the absence

    of phlegm and heat
