Through the Henry County Cooperative Extension Office’s 4-H program, Henry County students had the opportunity this summer to be involved in a host of fun summer activities, while learning a variety of skills. Students from 5th to 12th grade had a blast as they toured Turner Field, prepared brunch, visited the UGA campus and became certified in CPR/Frist Aid. Students learned first aid and CPR from Captain Russell, who taught the 7th to 12th grade students the steps to take to properly administer CPR. Participants were able to put their knowledge to the test on mannequins and learned how to survey a scene at an accident, contact authorities and to assess the victim. Upon completion of the course, each participant earned certification in CPR and first aid. Students also had the opportunity to participate in a cooking exercise where they planned and prepared brunch, learning cooking techniques as well as safety tips while working in the kitchen. 4-H members also learned how to properly set a table and were able to take

home the food they prepared along with a goodie bag that included their own apron. Other activities included several field trips, including a visit to University of Georgia campus. The trip included stops at different colleges on the university campus along with a visit to the State 4-H Office. Many students enjoyed the tour of the Veterinary School, while others were fascinated the research projects they saw in the Department of Food Science and Technology. The day ended with a stop by Grady College, where faculty explained how 4-H and journalism are related. Students also enjoyed a tour of Turner Field with an afternoon stop by the Fernbank Science Center. The new 4-H year begins in August and Open House will be Monday, August 18. Students in 6th – 12th grade are invited to check out what’s in store for the new year. Students must be accompanied by a parent. Please call the Extension Office at 770-288-8421 if you would like to attend or have any questions.

The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved acceptance of a grant in the amount of $5,000 on behalf of the Henry County Animal Care and Control Department. The action came at the August 5th regular Commission meeting. The noncompetitive grant was made possible through the Stanton Foundation, and the late Dr. Frank Stanton, who served as president of CBS from 1946 to

1973. The Stanton Foundation is a philanthropic organization dedicated to helping shelter

dogs find homes through adoption. According to Gerri Yoder, Director of HCACC, the $5,000 grant will be used to explore innovative approaches to increase dog adoptions at the shelter. For more information on Henry County

Can you render basic first aid? Know how to safely put out a small fire? Understand the skills need to participate in a search and rescue mission? With CERT Training, you will learn how to do all of this and more, and be an asset to your community when an emergency arises. Henry County Emergency Management Agency along with the Henry County Fire Department will be hosting two Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training classes starting in September at the Henry County Emergency Operations Center in McDonough. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. Through training, citizens can:• manage utilities and put out small fires• provide basic medical aid • search for and rescue victims safely

• organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective during an emergency. The CERT training is a free, 20-hour course, open to participants age 18 and over, who live or work in Henry County and can pass a criminal history background check. Space is limited, and when registering, please indicate which class you would like to attend. There are two convenient options including a three full-day session as well as a once-a-week for seven weeks evening session.
