Helvar’s office of the future

Editorial

People spend roughly one third of their day at work, therefore the quality of working environment is very important. Office environments are changing now more than ever before. Mobile lifestyle, improved information sharing, work and personal life balance will shape the office in years to come.

At Helvar we are also changing our office environment and the way we work. In spring 2016 we shall move many of our key operations in Finland to one central location in Espoo Keilaniemi. Our new head office provides us with a better location for the business in Finland, easier connections for visiting customers and the closeness to Aalto University’s (Finnish leading university for technology, business and arts).

Our office change is primarily not about the location, it’s about introducing an enhanced environment for our new way of working. We have state of art lighting controls, various space for different type of activity based working, more informal places for short discussions (rather than long meetings in traditional meeting rooms) and excellent mobile connectivity to create a better place for our people to work. This space has been designed to greatly improve information sharing, and more innovative company culture.

A lighting environment that can be controlled is an important part in creating a modern, multifunctional office space. Too many people work in offices without proper lighting controls in place. The good news is that adding lighting controls can enhance the working environment as well as save becoming more energy efficient. Through smart luminaire based lighting control solutions it’s easier to introduce controllability to existing office spaces without need for re-wiring.

The overall awareness of lighting control features are improving as office users demand more from the workplace. Offices will continue to improve for the benefits of the people working there.

Energy-efficient lighting control for

EGGER headquarters

True to the company’s motto

"Living and working with wood”,

the administrative building was made from

Offices

Founded in 1961, EGGER is known for its pioneering spirit, innovative solutions and complete ranges of products created from natural wood. The new head office of the family-owned company was completed during June 2015 in St. Johann in the Tyrol, Austria. True to the company’s motto "Living and working with wood”, the administrative building was made from self-manufactured wood-based materials.

The office was designed by the Austrian architect Bruno Moser and consists of two four-storey buildings connected by a glass Atrium. The remarkable thing about the construction is that the structures consist of prefabricated modules manufactured by EGGER themselves. The economic and ecological concept behind the modular timber construction is exemplary and is an inspiration for timber construction companies, architects and planners. Overall, the new office building provides space for 276 workstations and 48 training areas. There is also a staff restaurant with room for 220 people.

HELVAR LIGHTING CONTROLThe lighting design for the new building was developed by Manfred Draxl from conceptlicht, based in Mils (near Innsbruck). In terms of building services, it was crucial that the lighting and the lighting control system for the head office was modular.

For the lighting control, a Helvar DIGIDIM 910 router was installed on each floor, each with five modules. Additional routers on the ground floor control and regulate the lighting of the Atrium, the restaurant area, and the seminar rooms. Its scalability and flexible features ensure that the Helvar system offers a versatile solution that meets numerous requirements. The routers in the individual building modules were connected to each other via Ethernet and can be used as an overriding control system for all of the light sources.

Another important criterion for the EGGER construction was energy efficiency. The lighting in the corridors are controlled using Helvar motion and constant light sensors. The project management team opted to use Helvar because they use open standards and interfaces and can therefore subsequently be expanded. For example, DIGIDIM Toolbox systems are used in some corridors as stand-alone solutions that can later be connected to the router system where necessary, without requiring new components.

About EGGER

The family company was founded in 1961 and has around 7,400 employees. They have sites throughout Europe at 17 locations, manufacturing a comprehensive range of products from wood-based materials (chipboard, OSB and MDF), as well as sawn timber. In the 2014/2015 financial year, the company generated a turnover of 2.26 billion euros.

EGGER’s customers include the furniture industry, special-ist wood retailers and the DIY construction market. EGG-ER products can be found in countless areas of private and public life: in the kitchen, bathroom, office, living room and the bedroom. EGGER considers itself to be a full-service provider for furniture and fittings, as well as both structural timber work and wood-based flooring.

"The Helvar system fits ideally into our modular concept", explained Christopher Stimpel, project manager for electrical engineering in the EGGER Group. “It is flexible, you can extend it later, and it is an open system. We were also extremely pleased with the service provided by Helvar in the planning phase and implementation of the commissioning process”.

Comfort is the priority in the meeting rooms. In them, the router system takes control of the blinds and lighting. The individual components are operated via a central media control and the interface used here based on the IP-based HelvarNet protocol.

The use of control solutions and sensors in the office building is not the only way in which Helvar components have been implemented in the project. They are also used for energy-efficient lighting in the parking facilities, where for the first time, the Helvar DALI Repeater (405) is used to extend the DALI line length to over 300 m.

"The modular design of the new EGGER company building is superb and worth emulating”, explains Christian Wein, Country Manager of Helvar GmbH. “Our energy efficient and decentralised integrated control solutions perfectly fit the concept, primarily because they can be extended".

The original brief specified the need to have a fully self-contained lighting control system that had full integration into a flexible Building Management System (BMS) . Each connected device needed to go through one mainline to reduce additional wiring costs. With over 46 000 m2

spanning over four tower buildings a high quality BMS system needed to identify system failure, give instant reporting as well as be flexible and easy enough to customise and edit individual settings.

With energy efficiency playing a big part of this project from the design to the installation, the lighting control system needed to be energy saving and compliant with LEED. The system included over 500 PIR presence/absence sensors to ensure the lighting control system will run as efficiently as possible.

The Polish Green Building Council, member of World Green Building Council, has awarded the Alchemia project with the award for Certified Green Building in PLGBC Green Building Awards in 2015. ‘ We are very proud to have been involved in this amazing, award winning project’, says Dariusz Prekurat, managing director of DJP.

‘The Helvar system was able to meet our lighting control needs working in conjunction with the BMS system’, says Roman Sokołowski, Lead engineer. ‘DJP offered the complete package including the technical support and I am very satisfied with the Helvar system. DJP are a very professional company. They were able to implement all our requirements and needs to the full.’

DJP, Helvar’s partner based in Poland celebrates 25 years!

On the 24th September 2015 DJP celebrated their 25th anniversary. In 2016 it will be 25 years since they became a Helvar partner!

In the 1990s DJP signed the agreement to become a Helvar partner, this saw the introduction of Helvar’s magnetic and electronic ballasts to lighting control solutions and DALI networks on to their product portfolio. Over the years DJPs success has grown.

“This achievement is owed to the passion and commitment that our employees put into their everyday working lives says CEO Dariusz Prekurat. Without this dedication DJP would not have survived the lighting controls market over the last 25 years”.

of light to undertake research and development work into daylight and artificial light planning. The knowledge and understanding of the theme of "Light" have been passed on for more than 10 years through the Bartenbach Academy.

In the rooms of the Bartenbach Academy, based in Aldrans in the Tyrol, Austria, the new Bartenbach World of Light offers a further platform for exchange and inspiration. Technical and physical aspects play a role, as do artistic and perceptual psychological perspectives.

The visitor is brought closer to the fascinating medium of light, light research and planning projects through information boards, large-format photographs, partially interactive models and genuinely reproduced presentation spaces like conference rooms, living or experimentation rooms. The entire World of Light showcases new lighting materials that are actively integrated in the design, with solutions ranging from developments with industry partners and developments for the lighting industry, through to individual lenses and reflector systems.

The hall is the Auditorium of the Light Academy. Here, daylight enters through tube-shaped openings in the ceiling. At the sides, glass aluminium panels were used, which increase the space and give the impression of daylight. Tunable White lights were integrated into the ceiling. The lounge provides the atmosphere of a living room or hotel lobby. In this instance, pyramid structures made from vaporised plastic were used as new lighting materials. Installed in slots in the wall, they provide optimum light distribution in the room.

HELVAR LIGHTING CONTROL SYSTEMThe Bartenbach World of Light is an ideal platform for the Helvar solutions range, both components as well as in the control area. This is why Helvar LED drivers are used, for example, in the Tunable White lights. Tunable White plays a large role in the different lighting moods and scenarios. Perfectly co-ordinated regulation of light colour and intensity is necessary for the creation of an optimal light environment. The Helvar Router & Designer lighting management solution is a highly flexible system for the creation of individual ideas. This future-oriented, scalable solution is fully compatible with the DALI Colour Control Standard. With the Designer software, it is possible to select and set the colour temperature of each light within the lighting system with just a single click of the mouse which significantly reduces the system commissioning time.

"We are very proud that we have been able to showcase our expertise at the Bartenbach World of Light. It is recognition for Helvar as well as endorsement of our high-performance product range", says Christian Wein, Country Manager of Helvar GmbH.

Christian Bartenbach, Managing Director of Bartenbach GmbH explains that “We chose Helvar because the lighting specialist offers a comprehensive range of components to facilitate intelligent lighting control and the creation of an intelligent complete solution. It was not only the products, but also the planning and the technical implementation service that completely convinced us”.

Lighting and electrical supplier, SafeExIT, has transformed its office lighting setup with the help of Helvar products to create an energy efficient human centric lighting solution. The work has seen the Danish firm upgrade to an intelligent tunable white solution at its Glostrup, Denmark office, creating a shining example to show off to prospective customers as well as drastically reducing energy bills. The refit utilised existing fittings to ensure reduced costs and upheaval, with no need to remodel the existing ceiling.

SafeExIT was keen to save potential energy during the daytime, and be able to adjust the colour of the lighting to better match the natural light conditions. It was important for the firm to find a simple streamlined system that used a single panel to switch on and off the lights. It opted for Helvar’s iC networked solution, incorporating the 920 router and utilising Designer iC software. This future proof and scalable lighting management solution is fully compatible with the DALI colour control standard. The Designer iC solution made it easy to pick the right colour for each luminaire within the lighting network, making the commissioning process much quicker and more straightforward.

The lighting is set to a pleasant colour mix of 3000K and 5000K in the square-shaped luminaires, and is run by Helvar’s Tunable White iC-drivers, with linear LED-modules. Peter Bech, Manager at SafeExIT, comments: “I wanted to update the lights with a DALI system, and tunable white was an added opportunity on top of that. The impact of light on physical work conditions interested us, and we are keen to learn more about how it works. We’re delighted with the end result; everything looks much fresher now, and the previous lighting had become tired and outdated.”

The installation kept the original lighting switch by the reception desk. When the lights are switched on, everything works automatically, delivering a holistic automated lighting solution. Working in conjunction with the system, Helvar’s 312 Multisensors use PIR, constant light and infrared control to ensure optimal energy-efficient performance. The system supports the use of daylight through the office roof windows. As an added benefit, SafeExIT found the energy saving to be even better than expected. Helvar’s local partner calculated that SafeExIT’s old consumption was 16,517 kWh. The new calculation is 3,909 kWh per year, meaning a massive reduction of 76 % in the annual energy consumption, equivalent to an annual saving of €3,362.

The meeting room formed another key part of the lighting upgrade. Serving multiple purposes, the room functions as

“an exhibition area, classroom and as a cinema. Thanks to the new solution, SafeExIT manager Peter Bech is now able to control the lighting from his tablet via Helvar’s SceneSet app. Lighting scenes can be changed seamlessly and easily, which serves as an excellent training tool.

SafeExIT needed to install controlling wires for the DALI system for the new setup. They divided the office space into east and west segments and cabled the segments separately, which made the installer’s work simple and fast. The client appreciated the simple cabling and the possibility to easily all lighting units: luminaires, sensors and panels. SafeExIT also appreciated that Helvar partner, Vanpee, has been on hand to provide extensive support both during the project and afterwards. Helvar’s holistic solution included all components, controls and technical support, offering extra peace of mind, with SafeExIT secure in the knowledge that all components would be compatible with each other.

Hotels

Forming part of the hotel renovations on which the restaurant is located, the Kyu Karuizawa Hotel begun its new lease of life under its new name, concept and refurbished facilities. The resort had shut its doors in November 2014 for a full-scale renovation of its guestrooms, bar and lounge and restaurant facilities. The new concept for the hotel is “an unpretentious resort for a socialite’s lifestyle,” meaning that guests can escape from their daily lives and relax in

the nature of Karuizawa. A town that has thrived as one of Japan’s most popular tourists spots due to its cool summer climate, breezy environment and stunning scenery.

Flawless integration between the lobby, restaurant and bar area was an intrinsic aspect of lighting control specification for the hotel. Each area needed to fulfill its own requirements whilst still complementing the neighboring space. A Helvar lighting control system was selected specifically to embody such lighting plans, maintaining well balanced functionality with cost effective solutions. In addition, easy dimming with scene adjustment, along with the design quality of the simple interface was particularly attractive to the hotel.

During the refurbishment, LED lamps were adopted for the downlights at the hotel. The Helvar 458/UNI8 was the dimmer of choice as it enables best performance LED dimming. By meeting the dimming requirements as stipulated by the lighting designer, Helvar were able to dim the LED light sources without compromising the quality of light. Thus supporting the energy savings that the hotel required for the project.

Helvar Regional Partner, Rayos Ltd were very hands-on throughout the project. TEXT Sigi Riedelbauch, Public TouchPICTURES Hartmann International

Industrial

The logistics company Hartmann International, based in the East Westphalia and still run by the Hartmann family, is celebrating its 160th anniversary in 2016. In addition to logistics and freight forwarding services, they also offer haulage, as well as Air & Sea services. The certifications they have gained for quality and environmental management are evidence of the global company’s six generations of continuous dynamic and innovative developments.

Environmental impact is an important guiding principle for Hartmann International. 10,000 m2 of photovoltaic systems and special driver training to encourage lower fuel consumption speak for themselves. Another example is the way in which the logistics hall is equipped at Hartmann International Head Office in Paderborn. It has been fitted out with state of the art lighting and control technology from Berling and Helvar.

It all began with the Hartmann International subsidiary branch in Ibbenbüren. Through its physical proximity to Berling Living Lights, a company that specialises in the planning, design and manufacture of lights, contact was made and an idea was formed to plan and implement lighting control for the Ibbenbürener subsidiary branch. Andreas Hartmann, managing partner of Hartmann International, liked the energy-efficient solution in Ibbenbüren so much that he also wanted to implement it at their head office in Paderborn.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY IS OF CRUCIAL IMPORTANCEThe project for the Paderborn-based forwarding and logistics company involved the logistics hall, with its cargo handling area and high shelf storage areas, covering a total of 40,000 m². The aim was to segment the areas so that lighting could be separately and individually regulated.

Optimum illumination with maximum energy efficiency

Page 23: Helvar News Issue 21 (ENGLISH)

HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 21 23

Page 24: Helvar News Issue 21 (ENGLISH)

HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 21 24

In order to achieve this, a total of nine Helvar DIGIDIM routers were used for flexible lighting control.

There are also zones in the hall, which sees activity in different patterns. The rack storage aisles, which sometimes reach 60 metres in length, should only be illuminated when persons or vehicles are present. A Helvar High-Bay PIR motion sensor was installed for this purpose. They are designed specifically for motion detection at high mounting locations. The highly sensitive sensor technology is integrated with precision optics, allowing installation at a height of up to 15 metres.

In the words of Andre Berling, a lighting designer for Berling Living Lights GmbH: “We have already completed several projects with Helvar in the past one-and-a-half years, and we value the planning and technical execution service they provide."

PRECISE AND COMFORTABLE ILLUMINATIONAnother requirement was that the lighting was uniform: it was expected that as little shadow as possible would fall on the ground or on the packages. The camera technology that was installed is able to accurately detect movements, to enable better tracking of consignments for example. Another advantage of uniform illumination is an increase in the comfort of the working conditions.

The design and execution company Berling Living Lights understands very well the demands and requirements of production and logistics facilities. To provide a solution for this project, they opted for the self-developed Rana modular LED lighting system.

The dimmable Rana LED system can be provided as individual lights or as a 1-row or 2-row module. It’s unique feature is not only that each light can be individually adjusted, but also that different lenses with a beam angle of 20 to 75 degrees are available. Together with a large number of light installation points, this means that the formation of shadows can be avoided. The use of LED technology, controlled over DALI and in combination with the Helvar lighting control and sensors, provides maximum energy efficiency and reliability. The LED lights are also low-maintenance and can be replaced on an individual basis.

"The lighting project at the Paderborn head office is a complete success", says Andreas Hartmann, managing partner of Hartmann International GmbH & Co. KG. "Energy savings of up to 75% and optimum illumination is a result that has exceeded our expectations."

Hartmann International GmbH & Co. KG

The company was founded in 1856 by Anton Hartmann and is still run today by family members. Based at two locations in Paderborn and Ibbenbüren, the logistics and freight forwarding company employs around 400 people. At their headquar-ters in Paderborn, the company operates 24,000 m2 of warehouse space and a cargo handling area of 7,000 m2. In Ibben-büren, there are a further 18,000 m2 of operating space.

Hartmann is committed to social issues and is strongly oriented towards its staff and the environment. In 2013, the logistics company generated a turnover of EUR 104 million.

Berling Living Lights

Berling Living Lights offers excellent products, is experienced in the market, identifies important trends, creates attractive value added chains and offers a service that is characterised by a proximity to customers. It’s strengths lie in the develop-ment of customer-specific LED lighting systems. Many years of experience in the selection and management of suppliers and manufacturers ensures high quality, flexibility and adherence to delivery dates.

Whether for storage and logistics halls, offices and commercial buildings, outdoor areas or sports facilities, a detailed light-ing design is created for each project, taking into account all pertinent regulations and special requirements. This ensures that the desired requirements are optimally met in an energy-efficient and cost-efficient way.

With two million visitors every year, its packed schedule can make any refurbishment work a major challenge. Over the past six years the Gallery has been making the transition from tungsten halogen lamps to Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting. The installation has also included an upgrade of its exiting Helvar lighting control system with a new, more modern, solution.

The National Portrait Gallery had a lighting control system in need of some updating. Work first began in Room 13, which currently exhibits portraits focussing on some of the key figures in scientific and industrial developments in the 18th Century. Helvar’s lighting control solutions were specified alongside ERCO’s 14W Optec LED spotlights

which also required a lighting track change from 4 circuit to the modern standard of 3 circuit setup.

The refurbishment will see Helvar’s 920 router’s installed with over 200 dimmer units. HES 98020 Ballast Controller modules are all fully integrated into a bespoke building management system (BMS). For the top lit gallery areas, the custom BMS is able to carefully monitor the brightness of natural light coming through the windows whilst tracking the sun’s position and measuring the sky’s brilliance, enabling the blinds to open and close whilst also dimming the lights up and down, adjusting to the amount of natural daylight filling the areas. Automatic time schedules are programmed into the BMS system to enable the smooth transition of lighting control throughout the day and night.

The new lighting shows off much more detail in the

paintings than had been visible previously.“National Portrait Gallery Chief Engineer, Allan Tyrrell, who

oversaw the project says “In Room 13, we wanted to have a like-for-like replacement of the lighting, the original 100w tungsten halogen lamps were exchanged for 14 watt LED’s. Room 14 was used to trial Helvar’s lighting control solution which worked alongside ERCO’s luminaires enhancing the light’s ability to accurately reveal reds in paintings such as the portrait of the Duke of Marlborough”.

Helvar is delighted to be launching its new hybrid dimming range at Light & Building 2016. This patent pending lighting technology offers excellent LED dimming performance and is ideal for example classrooms or auditoriums where good quality dimming is required from 0–100 %.

Hybrid dimming capable products are dimmed in two different ways. For higher dimming ranges of 20–100 %, Constant Current Reduction (CCR) dimming is be used, and for lower dimming ranges below 20%, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is used. CCR is an efficient technique for products dimmed above 20 % but on lower ranges, this type of dimming can have a negative impact on the light quality by causing uneven light output or colour temperature variation. To complement this, high frequency PWM provides the best light quality between 1 % and 20 % and prevents change of light colour.

“Our new hybrid range looks set to revolutionise dimming capabilities across all of our drivers,” says Teijo Kuosmanen, Strategic Product Manager at Helvar. “We work hard in researching and developing products that will improve the quality to our end users as much as possible. We hope that by using the two forms of dimming, CCR and PWM, we can create products that offer the best possible solution, whatever the application.“

All new Helvar DALI drivers include these hybrid dimming capabilities. The new LED driver LL1x110-E-DA has enhanced dimming performance with a promised lifetime of 55,000 hours. On 20 % – 100 % range, CCR dimming is used and the PWM dimming on the 1 % – 20 % range has been improved. Now on the 10 % – 20 % range, the PWM frequency is 8 kHz, and on the 1% – 10% range, the frequency grows gradually from 1 kHz to 8 kHz. This technology ensures high quality of light in full dimming range of 1 % – 100 %. For more information on the hybrid dimming range, please visit helvar.com/products/hybrid-dimming.

Wireless technology is a big part of our daily lives. Over the past decade, the use of wireless connected devices has become more and more widespread to the point where many of us would wonder how we ever lived without them.

Communication technologies, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, are common in many devices, improving their ease-of-use, performance and capabilities. Meantime, the rapid market adoption of smartphones and tablets has brought about a significant change in the way people control various devices.

The rapid market adoption of smartphones and tablets has

brought about a significant change in the way people control

various devices.

This change is now also entering the lighting business. The big opportunity for wireless technology is in the retrofit sector. Over 80 % of the commercial and public buildings that will exist in 2030 are already built. Many of these buildings, the majority of them for public use, feature no lighting control at all. In existing structures, the installation of the wiring typically needed for a control system is either too disruptive or expensive to achieve, or actually impossible due to cabling restrictions within the building.

HELVAR NEWS | ISSUE 21 32

SO, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS THAT WILL DRIVE THE ADOPTION OF WIRELESS LIGHTING CONTROL SOLUTIONS?

The most important factor remains the drive towards reducing energy consumption and cost. For example, in Finland, the running cost for public buildings is huge (around 15B€ annually) and a significant portion (40 %) of that is energy cost. We know that energy usage associated with lighting can be reduced by 70-80 % with LED lighting combined with effective control. Simply lowering the total consumption by a few percent can offer significant savings to the property owners. In addition the new the European energy efficiency directive (2010/31/EU) will lead real estate sector to reduce energy consumption significantly .

Another important business driver is the flexibility and lower installation cost associated with wireless. Wireless control panels are often battery driven or operate through energy harvesting, which means that they can be easily moved or reconfigured. This is especially useful when the layout of a building changes, or when the purpose of a room is altered as frequently happens in commercial and public building spaces.

We operate in a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) world where we use smartphones and tablets at home and at work

for the convenience and personalized control that brings. We are familiar with using smart phones to control remote devices at home and this makes the transition to controlling lighting from a phone very natural. This trend will become more and more common also in commercial buildings.

WHAT STANDARDS ARE THERE TO WORK FROM?

Lighting control standards are evolving to meet the transition to wireless. We are seeing not just new wireless products entering the market, but also new companies introducing exclusively wireless lighting control solutions.

Today, there are several standards for wireless lighting control, but no single, dominant choice as yet. The differences between the current standards are the communication protocols, power consumptions, supported network topology, transmission range and data rate. Most of the various solutions use some of the non-licensed frequency bands (~2,4 GHz, 868 MHz.) for communication.

These communication standards are by no means compatible with each other. In additions there are new /upcoming standards like Thread, which uses 802.15.4 as the physical layer. Most of the above standards will come with enhancements and major improvements during 2016. One

There are several standards for wireless lighting control, but no single, dominant choice as yet.

of the most interesting new standard is the mesh version of Bluetooth, which will bring Bluetooth from being a point to point solutions now becoming a space solution.

All of the standards mentioned above need an application layer to deal with lighting control. Therefor it will be important for the whole industry to standardize that part as well. This work has started in forums like The Connected Lighting Alliance (TCLA).

The Connected Lighting Alliance (TCLA) is an industry consortium where the lighting industry is working together to select a wireless standard for lighting. Whilst this is happening, many companies are using available technologies to feed the market needs.

Wireless lighting control offers significant benefits when it comes to energy savings and the ability to bring controls to buildings where wired control is simply not an option, for example, heritage buildings or rented spaces. It is important that we make use of the capabilities for wireless control especially as we move closer to the Internet of Things world.

From a manufacturer’s perspective, developing a communication standard for such products will help clarify the right wireless solution for a particular project, ensure that benefits are delivered at an affordable price point for

installation and also help us meet end user expectations for greater and easier system control. In the future will the usage of IoT technology grow significantly. Wireless solutions are important enablers to form IoT eco-systems. The wireless communication standards will enter to its decisive phase soon as the market is evolving towards only a few standards with a better chance for increased interoperability.
