Welcome Letter

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is a great pleasure and honor to welcome you to Finland.

On behalf of the Nordic Society of Hematology and Oncology (NOPHO) and the local organizers, we warmly invite you to the 29th Annual Meeting of the International BFM Study Group (May 19-20, 2018) and the 11th Biennial Childhood Leukemia and Lymphoma Symposium (May 21-22, 2018) which will be held in Helsinki.

It is a privilege for NOPHO and the local organizers to host these meetings first time in the Nordic countries. NOPHO has been an official member the I-BFM SG since 2007, and Nordic clinicians, researchers and patients have benefited from this fruitful international collaboration enormously.

The meetings will be attended by major current and future opinion leaders in the field of pediatric hematological malignancies. It will provide excellent opportunities for clinicians and researchers from all countries in Europe and other parts of the world to meet, present data and plan future research in a friendly stimulating atmosphere.

Helsinki is the most popular international congress city in the Nordic countries with excellent flight connections and facilities.

With its seaside location and rich cultural scene, Helsinki offers memorable experiences in addition to the congress itself.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Helsinki, to continue the valuable and enjoyable I-BFM tradition.

With warmest regards

Jukka Kanerva, local chair

On behalf of NOPHO and the local organizing committee

Introduction About I-BFM SG Leukemias and lymphomas represent around fifty percent of malignancies occurring in children and adolescents. Studies in leukemias - particularly acute lymphoblastic leukemia - in these age groups have been a model for clinical and basic research beyond pediatric hemato-oncology since decades. As a result of sustained and well-organized research largely based on cooperative group efforts since the early 1960s, childhood and adolescent leukemias and lymphomas can now be successfully treated in almost 80% of patients. In the most common type of leukemia – acute lymphoblastic leukemia - cure rates with modern treatment protocols meanwhile exceed 80%. Despite this overall success, there are still subgroups of leukemia with a dismal prognosis.

The International BFM Study Group (I-BFM SG) is dedicated to promoting both research and clinical care for children and adolescents with leukemia and lymphoma. A growing number of participating national study groups from meanwhile more than 30 countries world-wide collaborates in committees and associated working groups addressing important aspects of clinical and basic research in the field of leukemia and lymphoma occurring during childhood and adolescence. The results are shared and discussed in meetings on a regular basis, guaranteeing fast and systematic transition of research findings to clinical care.

Aims and Objectives The tremendous success in the therapy of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children and adolescents is owed to well organized long-term research efforts, making use of large populations of patients. No less important is an effective combination with biological research and exchange of information. To approach the remaining questions, collaborative efforts are even more indicated. Uniform approaches in research and clinical trials ensure large enough data sets, reproducibility of data and expertise in demanding techniques. The I-BFM Study Group hopes to continue the success story by organizing joined proceedings. Objectives of the I-BFM Study Group are

• To foster the information exchange among the participating groups, including preliminary results. • To promote research projects in childhood leukemias and related disorders, including non-Hodgkin's

lymphomas. • To promote prospective randomized clinical trials, using consensus approaches and allowing the

participation of other groups. • To activate cooperative projects for biological research. • To promote translation of findings from basic to clinical research and vice versa. • To study rare problems.

About Childhood Leukemia and Lymphoma Symposium (CLLS) The tradition of Biennial Childhood Leukemia Symposia (CLS) was established in the late 90s in Hannover, Germany. Since 2004, this symposia have been interconnected with the I-BFM-SG meetings (CLS takes places every other year), offering an unique chance to discuss the latest progress in childhood leukemia in an open forum of pediatric hematologists and oncologists from all over the world. The Symposium has a standard congress structure composed of single oral session, invited talks by top experts in the field are combined with free communications and poster session. The name of the CLS was changed for 2018 on Childhood Leukemia and Lymphoma Symposium (CLLS).

European Working Groups on Childhood Myelodysplastic syndrome (EWOG-MDS) and Severe Aplastic Anemia (EWOG-SAA) will actively participate in CLS organizing the session on myelodysplastic syndrome and bone marrow failures.

About Helsinki

Helsinki is a modern city, with half a million residents, nicely situated by the Baltic Sea. Helsinki is the center of Finland’s administrative, educational and cultural life. It is also the finance and business center of the country. Together with its neighboring cities Helsinki forms the metropolitan area with more than one million inhabitants.

Helsinki is a city full of contrasts: light and white in summer, and dark, but full of warmth in winter; modern and cutting edge, yet steeped in fascinating past; cosmopolitan and compact capital where form follows the function, where both sea and deep forests are just a stone’s throw away. Helsinki is unique among the Northern European cities. The lifestyle in the second-most northern capital city in the world is full of contrasts and activities also in the form of hundreds of events and friendly people.

Helsinki’s identity has been formed by cultural influences from both the East and West. Over 450 years of history, several architectural layers and the impact of different periods can clearly be seen in the city. The beauty of the surrounding nature blends seamlessly together with high-tech achievements and design, while old traditions mix with the latest contemporary trends.

Everything is nearby – Helsinki is a pocket-sized metropolis that is ideal for visitors!
