Overview

TCS Insight is a FREE, PC based software tool used for the initial installation, programming, and verification of a TCS Basys Controls network. This network can be made up of various thermostats, monitors, controllers, and networking devices. In order to connect to the network, you will need a laptop or desktop computer running Windows 95 or later with at least one available USB port and either a QD1010‐USB converter (wired networks) or a QW1010a (wireless networks). Both the QD1010‐USB and the QW1010a are available for purchase from TCS Basys Controls.

Getting Started

TCS Insight is designed to work on a laptop or desktop computer running Windows 95 or later with at least one available USB port.

In order to use TCS Insight, you must first install the program.

1. Go to the TCS Basys Controls website ‐‐ www.tcsbasys.com

2. Click on the Products menu

3. Click on the "Download Insight" button at the bottom of the left‐hand column

4. Fill out the required information and click the "Download Insight" button

5. Click the "EXE File" link

6. Select "Run" in the browser window that pops up

7. Allow the program to install completely

8. You should now have a TCS Insight shortcut on your computer's desktop AND in your computer's Start Menu

After installation is complete, follow these steps to run TCS Insight.

1. Click on the "Start" icon in the Windows Task Bar

2. Click "All Programs"

3. Click "TCS Basys Controls"

4. Click on the "TCS Insight" icon to start the program

NOTE: You can right‐click on the "TCS Insight" icon to pin it to the Start Menu and/or the Task Bar

In order to communicate with a system, you will need to have at least one QD1010‐USB converter (wired networks) or one QW1010a converter (wireless networks). If there are multiple networks on your particular system, you will have multiple QD1010's or QW1010a's. For wired networks, you can use the existing QD1010 to communicate with the network; however, in some cases, it will be more convenient to use a second QD1010. For wireless networks, you will need to use the existing QW1010a. Both the QD1010‐USB and the QW1010a are available for purchase from TCS Basys Controls. If you are buying a new QD2010 or QD2040, you will get a QD1010‐USB with it. If you are buying a new QWL3.0 panel or already have one installed, both a QD1010‐USB and a QW1010a are built into the panel.

NOTE: You can only have one "master" communicating with a particular network at a time. If you have a QD2040, QD2010, or QWL panel installed, you will need to disconnect it from the network BEFORE plugging in with your laptop/desktop to use TCS Insight.

Once TCS Insight is running, follow these steps to use TCS Insight.

1. Click the desired Com Port on the Port sub‐tab (it will automatically open)

2. Click the Poll sub‐tab and then click "Poll Network"

3. Click on the desired controller to select it

4. Additional tabs will appear next to the Network tab that you can use to view details for the selected controller

Programming ‐‐ Allows you to view and edit the various program parameters.

Scheduling ‐‐ Allows you to view and edit the built‐in schedule(s). (may not exist for some controllers)

Monitoring ‐‐ Allows you to view the LIVE monitoring data for the selected controller.

NOTE: Additional features (beyond those listed here) are available within TCS Insight. Be sure to review the complete Help Resource for more information.

Updating Insight

You can update TCS Insight using two different methods. You can either use the built‐in update function from within TCS Insight or you can simply re‐download and re‐install TCS Insight. The built‐in update function allows you to update the controller templates (protocols and datasheets) separately from the software/program. By re‐downloading and re‐installing the software, you get everything (protocols, datasheets, and software) all at once. Both methods update the software/program to ensure you are using the most current version.

Built‐in Update Option (requires Internet access)

1. Click the Help menu

2. Click "Update Controller Templates"

a. TCS Insight will contact the TCS Basys Controls website and update the controller templates

b. A window will appear which shows "Updating" and a progress bar

c. Another window will appear which says "Protocols updated successfully!", click "OK"

d. Another window will appear which says "Datasheets updated successfully!", click "OK"

3. Click "Update Insight"

a. TCS Insight will contact the TCS Basys Controls website and update the software

b. A window will appear which shows "Updating Insight" and a progress bar

c. Another window will appear which says "TCS_insight Updated", click "OK"

4. TCS Insight will restart after the update process is complete.

NOTE: If an updated version of TCS Insight was available and installed, you will see a new version number in the program's title bar. If not, the version number will remain the same.

Download and Install Option (requires Internet access)

1. Go to the TCS Basys Controls website ‐‐ www.tcsbasys.com

2. Click on the Products menu

3. Click on the "Download Insight" button at the bottom of the left‐hand column

4. Fill out the required information and click the "Download Insight" button

File Menu

The FILE menu contains the following sub‐menus.

Open ‐‐ Allows you to open and view the protocol and/or datasheet for a controller even if you are not connected to that specific controller model.

NOTE: This feature is not commonly used.

Exit ‐‐ Shuts down TCS Insight.

Edit Menu

The EDIT menu contains the following sub‐menus.

Edit Protocol ‐‐ Allows you to edit the protocol for the active controller or ,if none are active, it allows you to open and then edit the protocol for a specific controller model.


Save Protocol ‐‐ Saves the changes made to the protocol currently being edited.

View Menu

The VIEW menu contains the following sub‐menus.

Protocol ‐‐ Allows you to view the protocol for the active controller.

Modules Menu

The MODULE menu contains the following sub‐menus.

ZigBee ‐‐ Opens a new tab which allows you to view and edit various parameters related to the ZigBee (wireless) portion of a wireless device ‐‐ thermostat (SZW_ _ _ ), gateway (QW_ _ _ _ _ ), or other device (SZW_ _ _ _ ).

Test And Balance ‐‐ Opens a new window running the Test and Balance program. This program allows you to poll the network, group "zoning" controls (SZ1018, SZ1025b, SZ1143b, and SZ2182), and then take control of them. Once you are controlling them, you can override certain parameters to expedite testing and balancing the system (pressure independent VAV, pressure dependent VAV, or other types of zoning system).

QD2040 > Recovery ‐‐ Opens a new tab which allows you to program a flash drive (like the PI4000) with specific commands that can then be downloaded into a gateway device (QD2040, QD2010, QWL3.0 panel, etc.). Once programmed, the flash drive is plugged into an available USB port on the gateway device. The gateway will then read the flash drive and perform the commands contained on it. The commands include Run Diagnostics/Read Diagnostics, Scan Serial Ports/Configure Serial Ports, New Network, Factory Default, Reset Password, and Disable Secure Mode.

Advanced

Parameters ‐‐ Opens a new tab which allows you to read, view, and edit the LIVE table of values for each programming parameter.

NOTE: This feature is not commonly used and should only be used under the direction of TCS Technical Support.

Bootloader ‐‐ Opens a new tab which allows you to erase and then download new firmware into a controller (version 2.0 and higher). This process should only be completed when directed to by and under the supervision of TCS Technical Support. Improper use of this feature can corrupt the controller's EPROM thereby rendering the controller non‐functional. THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE PRODUCT WARRANTY and would require sending the controller back to TCS for re‐programming AT YOUR COST.

Controllers

The CONTROLLERS menu contains no sub‐menus.

The CONTROLLERS menu displays the list of controllers that were detected when the system was last polled. Initially, the menu indicates the currently selected controller by displaying a check‐mark next to the controller's name (Model # and Address #). By selecting a different controller from the list, the programming, scheduling, and monitoring tabs are updated with that new controller's details AND you continue viewing whatever tab you were on at the time. This allows you to switch between controllers easily without having to go back to the Network>Poll tab.

Help Menu

The HELP menu contains the following sub‐menus.

Update Controller Templates ‐‐ Allows you to update the controller protocols and datasheets from the TCS Basys Controls website.

Update Insight ‐‐ Allows you to update the TCS Insight software from the TCS Basys Controls website.

Install FTDI Drivers ‐‐ Provides a built‐in resource to install the drivers required to connect your laptop or desktop computer to a TCS Basys Controls network through either a QD1010‐USB (wired network) or a QW1010a (wireless network). Both the QD1010‐USB and the QW1010a are available for purchase from TCS Basys Controls.

Insight Help ‐‐ Opens the TSC Insight Help Resource which is installed with the TCS Insight software.

Network Tab

The NETWORK tab allows you to select how to connect to the local network of controllers and then poll that network to communicate with controllers that are detected. The NETWORK tab is further divided into two sub‐tabs:

Port ‐‐ Allows you to define how you will connect to the local network (com port and baud rate).

NOTE: The default Baud Rate for all TCS Basys Controls products is 9600.

TIP: Clicking on a Com Port will automatically open it for use.

Poll ‐‐ Allows you to communicate with the network to detect all the controllers (wired and wireless) that are connected to it. Once detected, you can click on any controller to open more tabs and view its details (Programming, Schedule, and Monitoring). You can also right‐click on any controller to change its address.

NOTE: Each controller MUST have a UNIQUE address within its network. Available addresses range from 0 to 255, excluding 248.

TIP: AVOID using FACTORY DEFAULT addresses for thermostats, VAV box controllers, and monitors. ALL controllers and monitors with LCD displays and keypads have a factory default address of 0. Therefore, 0 should not be left on any controller to avoid potential duplicates. Also, since these controllers and monitors have an LCD display and keypad, it is simple to change their address at each device when they are initially installed and powered up.

TIP: Controllers and monitors WITHOUT an LCD display or keypad can typically be left at their factory default address. For example, 2100 series controllers have a factory default address matching the last 3 digits of their model number (i.e., an SZ2182 has a default address of 182 and an SZ2166 has a default address of 166) and in most cases, you will only have one of a specific model on a system. So, since it is not at address 0 and you will only have one of them, there will be no address conflicts. HOWEVER, if you do have more than one of a specific model on a system, you WILL have to change the addresses so each one is unique to the network.

Programming Tab

The PROGRAMMING tab allows you to view and edit various parameters for the currently selected controller. The PROGRAMMING tab is further divided into several sub‐tabs. The exact sub‐tabs present and the parameters contained therein vary greatly model‐by‐model. Typical sub‐tabs include:

System and Setpoints ‐‐ Allows you to enter/edit various setpoints, set system mode, and allow/disallow user access to the system mode.

Analog Inputs ‐‐ Allows you to enable/disable various functions, enter/edit various limits, and enter/edit various calibration offsets.

Digital Inputs ‐‐ Allows you to select/change the function, source, and override status for each DI.

Digital Outputs ‐‐ Allows you to enter/edit the offset, differential, and minimum on/off time plus enable/disable certain outputs. You can also configure the fan operation for occupied and unoccupied times, allow/disallow user access to the fan mode, and select/change the fan control source and override status.

Analog Outputs ‐‐ Allows you to select/change the action and range for each AO and enter/edit various setpoints, positions, and PID options.

Additional Functions ‐‐ Allows you to enable/disable and configure various functions such as override time, Smart Recovery, Daylight Saving Time, and requiring access codes to enter the programming and scheduling modes on controllers with displays/keypads.

NOTE: The actual settings and selections on each sub‐tab vary from model to model, see the product manual for more detailed information.

Additional model specific sub‐tabs include:

Astronomical Time ‐‐ SL2105, SL2108, SLQ218 ‐‐ Allows you to enter the latitude, longitude, and GMT offset for the site, and a time offset for each channel to control the lighting based on sunrise and sunset at that location.

Channel Defrost Scheduling ‐‐ SZ2141 ‐‐ Allows you to enter/edit the start times, duration, termination limits, and defrost alarm related settings.

Duct Functions ‐‐ SZ1025b ‐‐ Allows you to enter the dimensions, operation mode, k factor, and desired min/max settings for each VAV box.

Fan Functionality ‐‐ SZ1062 ‐‐ Allows you to enter/edit the fan modes and speed for occupied and unoccupied times plus the minimum on/off times for each fan speed.

Local Alarm Settings ‐‐ SZ1144, SZ1145, SZ2141 ‐‐ Allows you to enter/edit the various settings for the local alarm output.

Meter Constants ‐‐ SE1000 and SEQ100 ‐‐ Allows you to enter/edit various constants to configure each input to convert the pulse received into the correct values for electric (single and three phase), gas, or water consumption.

PID Options ‐‐ SZ1025b ‐‐ Allows you to enter/edit various parameters to fine tune the PID control on the analog output.

NOTE: The actual settings and selections on each sub‐tab vary from model to model, see the product manual for more detailed information.

Schedule Tab

The SCHEDULE tab allows you to enter/edit the occupied times for each controller and exception schedules (holidays) on certain controllers. Not all controllers have a built‐in 365 day time‐clock (which is required to handle holidays directly in the controller), so for controllers having a 7 day time‐clock or no time‐clock at all, the Holiday 1 and Holiday 2 sub‐tabs will not appear. And, for lighting controllers, you will see a sub‐tab for each channel which contains both a Schedules and a Holidays sub‐tab. Typical sub‐tabs include:

Date and Time ‐‐ Allows you to set the day, time (AM/PM format), and date separately or synchronize the controller to your PC's time.

NOTE: Date will only be used on controllers which have a built‐in 365 day time‐clock.

Schedules ‐‐ Allows you to set the start and end time (using 24 hour format) for each occupied schedule.

NOTE: Individual schedules cannot cross midnight. If you need to schedule occupied hours that cross midnight, the hours will need to be broken into two schedules. For example, to schedule a site from 8am to 2am the next day, you will have to set it up so Schedule A goes from 08:00 to 24:00 and Schedule B goes from 00:00 to 02:00 on the next day.

TIP: To set a controller to fully unoccupied use 00:00 to 00:00. To set a controller to fully occupied use 00:00 to 24:00.

Holiday(s) ‐‐ Allows you to set an exception schedule which will be used instead of the standard occupied schedule starting on a particular date and lasting for a specified number of days.

NOTE: In most cases holiday schedules are handled by Ubiquity™ rather than directly in the controller.

Monitoring Tab

The MONITORING tab allows you to view the LIVE monitoring points available for that specific controller. The points are automatically updated approximately every second. The exact number and type of monitoring points vary greatly model‐by‐model. By by clicking and holding on a certain point, you can drag it to a new location and drop it there by releasing the mouse. By right‐clicking on a specific point, you can choose to graph it, highlight it, or remove it from view. All changes to the monitoring tab or the points shown on it are reset when a different controller is selected or the same controller is re‐selected on either the Network>Poll sub‐tab or from the Controllers menu.

ZigBee Module/Tab

NOTE: In order to use the ZIBGEE tab, you must be plugged into a single wireless device AND have its ZigBee jumper set to ON.

The ZIGBEE module opens a new tab which allows you to view and edit various parameters related to the ZigBee (wireless) portion of certain controls and other devices. The ZIGBEE tab is further divided into three sub‐tabs:

ZigBee Wireless ‐‐ Allows you to read the device (by clicking "Get") to view its Zigbee Address and to poll the entire wireless network (by clicking "Poll Network") to view all the devices on that network as a list or a map (opens in a new window).

NOTE: The Poll Network feature is only works when connected to a gateway device (QW1010a).

Node Data ‐‐ Allows you to read the device (by clicking "Get") and view certain parameters including Device Type (gateway or router), Zigbee Children (other devices connected wirelessly through this device), and TCS Children (other devices wired to this device).

Network Node ‐‐ Allows you to read the device (by clicking "Get") and view or change (by clicking "Set") certain parameters including Pan ID (wireless network identifier), Operating Channel (current channel being used by this device), and Channels (available channels this device could use if needed).

NOTE: All devices within a specific wireless network must have the same Pan ID and the same Channels options selected.

TIP: If a site has multiple wireless networks, it is recommended to separate the Channels for each Pan ID or even set a single Channels option.

Reset ‐‐ Allows you to reset the network (gateway only, by clicking "Reset Network") or clear and reset the individual device (gateway or router, by clicking "Clear Tables and Software Reset").

Test And Balance Module

The TEST AND BALANCE module opens a new window running the Test and Balance program. It can be used with pressure independent VAV, pressure dependent VAV, or other types of zoning systems. This program allows you to:

Poll the network

Group "zoning" controls (SZ1018, SZ1025b, SZ1143b, and SZ2182)

View certain monitoring points for the controllers within each group

Program the controllers as a group or individually

Override certain parameters to expedite testing and balancing the system

NOTE: Only works with version 2.0 or higher SZ1025b, SZ1018, SZ2182, or SZ1143b controllers.

Follow the steps below to use the Test and Balance module.

1. Run TCS Insight

2. Click the Modules menu and select "Test and Balance"

3. The Test and Balance program starts in the a new window

4. On the Network tab ‐ click the checkbox(es) for the applicable COM port(s)

5. Click "Poll Network"

NOTE: All controllers on the network will display as they are found. Only allowable controls will be selectable (SZ1025b, SZ1018, SZ2182, SZ1143b, version 2.0 or higher). All other controllers will have a gray background and WILL NOT be selectable.

6. The green bar will extend across the interface when it is done polling

7. Click "Check All" or click the individual checkboxes to select the desired controllers

8. Click "Create Zone", enter a Zone Name, and click "OK"

9. On the Zone tab's Monitor sub‐tab, you can view all the allowable controllers you selected to be in that particular zone.

TIP: You can click‐and‐drag controllers into the right‐hand side of the interface to divide your controllers into groups and make it easier to work with different controller models at the same time. Once divided into groups, you can override the controllers in the left‐hand side in certain way and the controllers in the right‐hand side in a completely different way.

10. On the Zone tab, select the Override sub‐tab ‐‐ click the checkbox(es) for the controls that you want to override

11. Select the type of controllers you want to override from the drop‐down menu

12. Select the type of override(s) you want to use by clicking the appropriate checkbox(es) and filling in the desired value(s)

13. Click the corresponding "Start" to initiate the override(s) ‐‐ The Status message will update to Active and show the number of controllers being overridden

NOTE: Once initiated, overrides continue while active AND for 10 extra minutes after "Stop" is clicked or the program is exited.

14. Click the corresponding "Stop" to terminate the override(s)

15. From the Zone tab's Override sub‐tab, you can right‐click on a controller to bring up its programming page.

NOTE: Changes to programming need to be downloaded to the controller (click "Write") if they are to become permanent.

16. From the Zone tab's Override sub‐tab, you can right click an SZ1025b to Auto Adjust its K Factor.

a. Right‐click on the desired SZ1025b

b. Select "Auto Adjust k‐Factor"

c. A dialog box opens show the current CFM reading

NOTE: You cannot adjust the K factor if the current CFM reading is 0.

d. Enter the actual/measured CFM in the

e. Click "Calculate"

f. A new k‐factor will automatically be programmed into that SZ1025b and it should read/display the proper CFM

NOTE: This is a "permanent" programming change to that specific SZ1025b. To change the value, you would have to go to that SZ1025b's programming page and change it manually OR re‐run the Auto Adjust K‐Factor feature.

17. From the Zone tab's Group Program sub‐tab, you can program one or many controllers of the same type.

a. Select the desired controller type from the drop‐down menu

b. Select the controllers you want to program by clicking the appropriate checkbox(es)

c. Select the parameter(s) you want to program by clicking the appropriate checkbox(es) and filling in the value(s)

NOTE: Changes to programming need to be downloaded to the controllers (click "Write") if they are to become permanent.

TIP: If you are programming an SZ1025b, while the programming page is open the SZ1025b will begin using the new values entered on the programming page immediately. However, to make those changes permanent, you still need to click "Write".

The available Monitoring Points vary by model number as follows:

SZ1018 ‐‐ Room Temp (°F), AO1 (%), Discharge Air Temp (°F), DI2 (aquastat)

SZ1025b ‐‐ Air Supply (CFM), AO1 (damper, mA or %), Zone Setpoint (°F), Supply Air Temp (°F), Setpoint (CFM)

SZ1143b ‐‐ AI1 (static pressure, "wcd), AO1(%), Setpoint (static pressure, "wcd)

SZ2182 ‐‐ AO4 (fanspeed, %), AI4 (static pressure, "wcd), Fan Status, Setpoint ("wcd)

The available Overrides vary by model number as follows:

SZ1018 ‐‐ AO1 (damper) percentage or Min/Max position

SZ1025b ‐‐ Min/Max Heat CFM, Min/Max Cool CFM, or AO1 (damper) Min/Max position

SZ1143b ‐‐ AI1 (static pressure) setpoint or AO1 (fanspeed) percentage

SZ2182 ‐‐ Pressure setpoint, Fan status, or AO4 (fanspeed) percentage

QD2040>Recovery Module/Tab

The QD2040> RECOVERY module opens a new tab which allows you to program a flash drive (like the PI4000) with specific commands that can then be downloaded into a gateway device (QD2040, QD2010, QWL3.0 panel, etc). Once programmed the flash drive is plugged into a USB port on the gateway device. The gateway will then read the flash drive and perform the commands contained on it. The available commands include:

Run Diagnostics ‐‐ Runs the diagnostic routine and saves the results back to the flash drive.

Scan Serial Ports ‐‐ Scans the gateway's serial ports and saves the configuration data back to the flash drive.

New Network ‐‐ Sets how the gateway will connect to the Internet or can put it into Setup Mode.

NOTE: Setup Mode also enables the DHCP server option. See the note below regarding the DHCP server option.

Factory Default ‐‐ Resets the gateway back to Factory Defaults (IP= 192.168.1.1 and DHCP server enabled).

NOTE: The DHCP server option is only intended to be used for setup. DO NOT enable this option if the gateway is currently connected to a network that already has a DHCP server on it as doing so this may cause problems on the current network. The gateway will need to be unplugged from the network first.

Reset Password ‐‐ Resets the login password (for the setup page) back to factory default.

Disable Secure Mode ‐‐ Temporarily or permanently disables secure mode to allow you to connect directly to the gateway and log into the setup page.

After certain commands run, you will plug the flash drive back into your computer to view the results. The following additional options will appear in the Select Action list:

Read Diagnostics ‐‐ Allows you to read the results summary from the diagnostics that were run and create a ZIP file to send to TCS Technical Support for assistance in diagnosing issues. Only appears after using the Run Diagnostics command/action.

Configure Serial Ports ‐‐ Allows you to enable the available COM ports and configure them (port number, protocol, baud rate, and time out setting) for use. Only appears after using the Scan Serial Ports command/action AND will require you to plug the flash drive back into the gateway device.

Parameters Module/Tab

The PARAMETERS module opens a new tab which allows you to read, view, and edit the LIVE table of values for each programming parameter. You can select a specific parameter to view/edit and then read all (by clicking "Read All") positions or just a few (by clicking "Read Selected") positions. You also have the option to enter a new/different value and save it to the controller (by clicking "Write Selected"). Finally, the Read Continuous option (checkbox) will constantly read/refresh either all positions (after clicking "Read All") or just a few positions (after clicking "Read Selected") until stopped by clicking "Read ALL"/"Read Selected" or un‐checking the Read Continuous option.

Bootloader Module/Tab

The BOOTLOADER module opens a new tab which allows you to erase and then download new firmware into a controller (version 2.0 and higher). This process should only be completed when directed to by and under the supervision of TCS Technical Support. Improper use of this feature can corrupt the controller's EPROM thereby rendering the controller non‐functional. THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE PRODUCT WARRANTY and would require sending the controller back to TCS for re‐programming AT YOUR COST.
