PLATINUM JUKEBOX

10 Decades of Song & Dance

Platinum Jukebox is a journey of music, song and dance starting with the gramophone in the 1920s and ending with the iPod in the 21st Century. We start the journey in the 1920s, when music

from Louis Armstrong and Fred Astaire were the platinum hit songs of the week. In the 1930s and 1940s, both the LP 331⁄3 rpm record and the 45 rpm single records were invented in an era of peace, depression and then war.

In the 1960s and 1970s we saw the mass production of stereo albums, and turntables became affordable. Soon the world was doing The Twist, The Loco-Motion and The Funky Chicken to songs like Let’s Twist Again, Shout, These Boots were Made for Walkin’, I’m a Believer and Proud Mary. In the 1980s - cassette tapes and compact discs were the music format, along with dancing styles such as The Moonwalk, Breakdancing, Latin American Dancing to massive selling icons such as Michael Jackson and bands such as Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Miami Sound Machine. In the 1990s we encountered The Macerena and Line Dancing to everything from Cotton Eyed Joe, Achy Breaky Heart to Shania Twain’s – Man! I Feel Like a Woman! - while the compact disc remained the flavour of the day. In the 21st century the iPod has become the flavour of the day with downloading taking the place of compact discs.

Hello Joburg • October 2015 • www.gohello.co.za6

The first time I laid eyes on Masego Maps Maponyane was on a South African fashion week ramp in 2012. It’s hard to forget the solid stride of a man poised for great things in a

lawn green suit with bark brown brogues.

It’s three years later and Maps is a household name in the fashion and entertainment industry. And boy can he still rock a suit! So what do you do with a fashion icon like Maps (besides splash him all over the big screen – more about that later) – you put him in a Tailor Me suit on the cover of Hello Joburg Magazine and do a shoot right in the heart of Johannesburg at the all new Four Seasons Hotel, The Westcliff Johannesburg. Let’s face it, Maps in a suit at the Westcliff with that iconic and magnificent view of Johannesburg is pretty much any girl’s dream – well mine at least.

So about the suits…meet Tailor Me - a bespoke suit business targeted at professionals, gents who want to impress at functions and of course the discerning guy looking for a suit that is a little more special than just “off the rack”. South African men are not all average sizes and vary in shape and form – Tailor Me was designed for these guys. Whether you’re hitting the gym, super slim or a little plus size, Tailor Me is the suit brand for you.

The birth of Tailor Me could be translated into a fun TV series. Four friends who met at university navigate the end of student life together as they enter the corporate world. They gather a whole lot of different corporate and business experience and then while planning for a wedding, a fashion crisis spurs a genius idea. A group of different sized groomsmen made it impossible to find standard shop bought suits. So the guys tailored their first suit out of necessity. While these first suits may have lacked the quality, finesse and workmanship that Tailor Me has come to be known for, the seed had been planted.

George Diab, Brad Marriott, Rick Da Matta and Dax Menday are the Tailor Me team who created the company in 2013 an have been suiting up gents ever since. Besides the superb quality suits what really sets Tailor Me apart is their true devotion to the bespoke concept. Dax explained. “Part of the Tailor Me service is that we come to you - whether it’s at your office or home we believe this one-on-one experience enables us to produce something unique for our customers.”

Building something from scratch is bound to teach you a thing or two about being an entrepreneur. Like anything, there are challenging nuances to their business. Dax elaborates “The challenges we have faced are mainly time constraints. There are small hurdles such as production, marketing issues and growing pains. Starting a business really requires hard work and dedication. “ But with the lows come the highs too, he adds “- everything you do, all the effort you make, any stress and strain, is all for something you have a passion for, have built from the ground up and that affects you directly. This makes entrepreneurship hugely rewarding”

ADVERTORIAL

While this is their first time working with Maps, it certainly will not be the last. “Maps is a style icon in his own right and someone who really reflects our brand - Cool and confident with a personable character with which anyone can relate and engage.”

A real gentleman indeed, Maps understands the importance of a good suit too. “A suit does wonders for your self-esteem and image. A good suit gives all the right impressions, it means that you take what you do seriously, you’re more than likely discerning and that you give 110% to everything that you do.” But Maps is more than just a good looking suit. Sorry ladies; Maps aint spilling the beans on his love life…

No stranger to the small screen, you can catch Maps in Ses Top’la on SABC1 and High Rollers on SABC3. He is also the host of the ‘I Am South African’ show on ANN7 which profiles inspiring and extraordinary South Africans. He’s exploding onto the big screen too in local Romcom ‘Tell Me Sweet Something’ directed by award-winning filmmaker Akin Omotoso (“Man on Ground”), which is out in September as well as a part in’ Ayanda’ which will be released in October.

So what’s next for Maps? We expect big things. “I’m all about progression and getting the best out of myself and my potential; if my next move doesn’t potentially get me a step closer to being the Grand Master of my own game of chess then there’s no point in making it” For a talented guy like Maps with a heart of gold and good old fashioned ethics (which he attributes to his parents) this is just the beginning of much bigger things to come.

And the same goes for the Tailor Me team who are putting some roots down too. They have opened a showroom and fitting premises at 51, 6th street, Parkhurst, so pencil in a time to visit. H

Back in the day the greatest inventions usually happened haphazardly. Take Lindt for example, which made its’ first barrel of

smooth and creamy chocolate when an employee forgot to turn off the antique machine for an entire weekend in 1845. The Philly Cheesesteak Company’s story isn’t much different… It all began in the 1930’s as an Italian-American named Pat Olivieri ran out of frankfurters at his hotdog stand in South Philadelphia. Instead of closing up shop, the determined immigrant chopped up German sausage with thinly sliced pieces of beef and melted cheese. Pat then lathered this appetizing concoction on top of an Italian bread roll and his entire business model changed!Fast-forward to 2012 where brothers, Bruno and Ivan Persic learned of Pat’s story and instantly found themselves inspired. Craving the taste sensation and amalgamation of cheese and beef,

they decided to find it themselves and serve the people of South Africa with their own version of a Philadelphia Cheesesteak. Naturally that means their menu’s are beefy but they are a few chicken options. Every product is locally sourced and the buns are always fresh. Take our word for it!In 2013, Philly Cheesesteak Co. opened its’ first store in Fairlands, Johannesburg and became an instant hit! Their next few stores soon followed in Bryanston, The Newtown Junction and most recently inside 27Boxes in Melville. Because people love 100% ground beef and elite cheeses! Their funky fresh interior also makes eating-in (more than) pleasurable. This is exactly why their latest store is our absolute favourite because it has a built-in sun deck where you can sip on Philly Cheesesteak’s hand-crafted fruit juices while Jozi moves along merrily. This summer season you’re likely to be on the lookout for a rather adorable spot. The last thing us Joburgers want is a dull atmosphere

and a gloomy ambience. Instead we want something lively, vivacious, quaint, intimate and oh so cool. So we have found just the place for you and it is situated in the heart of Sandton’s shopping district.Tucked away in the Legacy Corner Mall with an inviting atmosphere and a picturesque setting lies The Nook. Cute, charming and delightful, this deli/coffee shop is just what Sandton CBD needs. The Nook offers simple yet tasty food on an unpretentious menu. There is also an African flair to the menu and the background picture of three African ladies smoking cigars is just another persuasive addition.Did we fail to mention how affordable the menu is? We opted for the cooked deli selection with chicken, green salad and crispy potatoes oh and the most moreish slaw on the side. It felt like we were indulging in a home cooked meal, warm and familiar, the food is delicious. This is modest cuisine done extremely well.So Joburgers wrap your heads around the sunshine season and head on down to The Nook where you can expect inspired flair and a comfortable appeal. H

A SIMPLE CURVEA Cartier timepiece is always a work in the three dimensions, a quasi-architectural exercise. The Mai-son had traditionally placed great emphasis on the volumetric qualities of its designs, creating models characterized by strong lines and distinctive forms.Cle de Cartier is no exception. In one graceful swoop, it introduces a new element into the Maison’s watchmaking vocabulary: the tightly-drawn curve. In profile, it is arched, streamlined and sleek, organic and ergonomic. Its sensual shape fits snugly to the wrist, providing ease and congeniality to the wearer. In true Cartier style, it feels as good as it looks. Per-fectly poised to one side. The element that gives the new model it’s name: Its jewel-like, key-like crown.

RE-THINKING A SIMPLE SHAPEFor the concept of Cle De Cartier, the challenge was clear: to create a new form based on a perfect circle. A task that mat at first appear effortless. But, what seems straightforward is often deceptively so. The result is a feat of subtlety and restraint. Shapes are pared down and reduced to their essence. Everything is a question of precision, balance and proportion. Great mastery was employed to create a seamless flow, an elegant economy and a harmoni-ous whole. Sharp edges were eliminated. The bezel is greatly rounded, the horns smoothly tapered. Each component unites to conjure up an intangible perfection that is at once surprising, intuitive and universal. It is as it should be, as if it were always meant to exist.

A SIMPLE REVOLUTIONCartier has a rich history of creating innovative crowns and Cle de Cartier firmly upholds that heritage. This time, it is not only one of the watch’s most distinctive features, but also the inspiration for its name. ‘Cle’ in French means key and the crown’s resemblance to one is unmistakable. The act of resetting the time and date introduces a new gesture to the world of watch making-one that recalls the

Cle de CartierIconic Timepieces

Intrinsic to Cartier’s history as a creative watchmaker is a spirit of innovation. A pioneering ethos that has not just brought about numerous technical advances but also engendered ground breaking new forms: The square for Santos, the rectangle for Tank… The Result is a line of emblematic timepieces that have not just created a new aesthetic, but also stood the test of time. Creativity and pure excellence are the

key to a success that has endured for more than a hundred years. The same qualities at the very heart of the Cle de Cartier.

traditional turning of a key to wind up a clock. Its sizable dimensions make the crown remarkably easy to handle. But, functionality is not its sole asset. It is also an exquisite object in its own right. Elongated and pure, it is adorned with a sapphire that is not set in a classic manner. Instead it is ingeniously inserted to remain flush with the metal surrounding it.

A SIMPLE CLICKThe new indexed winding mechanism combines both facility and conviviality. Specially developed with the user-friendliness in mind, it incorporates a system that allows the time to be set with great ease. After making adjustments, it is possible to push the crown back in place and return it to its vertical posi-tion without the hands moving-an apparently simple gesture mastered thanks to Cartier’s consummate savoir-faire. And an exercise accompanied by a reas-suring sound that enhances the sensorial experience. The act of both turning the crown and pushing it back in activates a gentle clicking noise. A sound with echoes of congeniality, quality and the complex inner workings of the finest timepieces.

A SIMPLE STEPCombing cutting-edge technology and in-depth expertise, the new movement was developed, fabri-cated and assembled by the craftsmen of the Cartier manufacture in Switzerland. Its name, 1847 MC was not chosen by chance. The numerals indicate the year of the Maison’s creation. With a 25.6 diam-eter, it was imagined according to the same design principles as the case itself: A pared-down approach and a focus on efficiency. The incorporation of a particularly rapid barrel provides it with tremendous chronometric stability. Its automatic mechanism ro-bustness and durability thanks to a special conceived lever system. Decorated with “Vagues de Genève”. It boasts a semi-instantaneous date indicator and a 42-hour power reserve too.
