People of Joburg

On the coverZiphozakhe Zokufa, speaks to Hello Joburg about stepping into the role of Miss South Africa, what she’s expecting at Miss Universe, and her future plans and endeavours. The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, was the location for the shoot.Photo: Phillip Santos

The fashionista who has the cutest Boston terrier alive: Roxy Kopping

Look at you, all stylish and successful…It really all stems from my creative and artistic flair that comes from selling vintage one-of-a-kind

garments.

Bread&Butter boutique?Exactly! I’m hoping to involve other South African designers in its future endeavours.

What is your go-to fashion accessory? It has to be jewellery. A chunky silver necklace or a simple, funky ring, can add a whole new dimension to an outfit. Bring on the costume jewellery!

You’re big into social media, right? Instagram or Pinterest?I am obsessed with both, but if I have to choose, it would be Instagram. Follow my boutique @breadandbutterboutique.

Dogs or cats?Definitely dogs. I have the cutest Boston terrier alive. He even has his own Instagram account @harperthebosterrier.

ed’s letter

Hello Joburgers!

Hello Joburg was lucky enough to secure the new Miss South Africa’s first magazine cover shoot and interview. We chatted to

Ziphozakhe Zokufa at the luxurious Maslow Hotel, while a typical Joburg thunderstorm pelted down

outside. Barely two months ago Ziphozakhe was asked to step up and don the Miss SA crown as Rolene Strauss was

crowned Miss World. We wish her good luck representing South Africa at the Miss Universe pageant in Miami.

Our February issue also celebrates Valentine’s Day and brings you a range of ideas – everything from James Blunt’s Moon Landing tour at Carnival City; great gift ideas for him and her in ‘What we’re crushing on’; romantic restaurants to wine and dine the evening away; a 90’s cult action special screening at The Bioscope in Maboneng - to leisurely picnic spots in Joburg and just a short drive away.

Be sure to try these four exciting new restaurant openings – Hogshead and Thrupps’s Fusion Deli – both in Illovo, and Knead and The Wolfpack – both in Sandton.

Enjoy!

This poignant play is the monologue of a double bass player, speaking to the audience in his small

sound-proofed apartment and drinking beer. He is in his mid-thirties, employed at a State Orchestra. A SATURDAY WELL SPENT WITHBRONWYN ABRAHAMS

8am: Quick hike in Kloofendal nature reserve. www.jhbcityparks.com

10am: Breakfast at La Sel at The Cradle. Arguably some of the best views outside of Johannesburg city. The pumpkin fritters are my favourite.www.thecradle.co.za

12pm: What’s a Saturday without a spot of shopping? For some interesting finds I dive into 44 Stanley which houses a few clothing stores and some nice brunch spots too - double the awesomeness.www.44stanley.co.za

2pm: Lunch at YOLO in Melville for a gourmet-style pizza, without the pretence. You can choose your own base, crust and toppings. 3 Seventh Street, Melville 011 482 7016

4pm: A full body massage is never a waste of money in my book. Try the full body Thai massage at Kai Thai.www.kaithai.com

6pm: Sundowners at Living Room, Maboneng. Probably my favourite place in Joburg, this eco-rooftop bar/lounge is the best chill spot. I usually go around 3pm and stay for a few hours to watch the sunset over the CBD. Delicious platters and a bottle of champers, why not? wiww.livingroomjozi.co.za

8pm: Dinner time at the Green Peppercorn because a girls got to eat. I have not been disappointed, no matter what I order. They have guest chefs each month who prepare amazing taste plates.wiww.greenpeppercornbistro.co.za

12pm: I feel a bit old for the club scene so if I am out this late I relax at the whiskey bar at Southern Sun Hyde Park for the perfect view and a night cap. wiww.tsogosunhotels.co.za

The Patisserie, Illovo, is one of Johannesburg’s best kept secrets, with its welcoming candy-striped interior, trés chic Parisian-inspired ambiance and

its wide selection of the most delicious macaroons, petit fours, cakes, tarts and pastries. Established in 2003, The Patisserie has

been the place to meet for over ten years now. Breakfasts and light lunches are the main events in this busy patisserie.

Favourite breakfast items include the very popular creamy scrambled eggs with salmon, tomato and basil or poached eggs with Parma Ham and grilled tomato. For lunch, the generous salmon fishcake, served with The Patisserie’s signature green rocket mayonnaise dressing and a crisp leafy green salad is one that shouldn’t be missed. There is also a choice of chicken and beef pies and a selection of delicious quiches if you’re look-ing for something lighter.

The charming coffee shop can be hired for baby showers, kitchen teas, birthday parties and even evening functions, and has set the scene for many happy, memorable occasions. The team at The Patisserie will work with you to create exactly what you’re looking for and is renowned for going the extra mile for their customers - many of whom have been loyal devotees since the shop first opened. The Patisserie is fully licensed, so a celebratory bottle of cold champagne is always on hand.

The Patisserie, Illovo, also offers an extensive catering menu that includes roast beef fillet, Asian salmon, oxtail and curries – which are perfect for stress-free entertaining at home. Corporate catering, corporate gifts and hampers are also a major part of their repertoire.

While the pricing is premium, owner Helen Theo is clear about the fact that high quality ingredients always make for a high quality eating experience. It’s her intention to consistently deliver cakes and specialities that are unrivalled in Johannesburg. Her commitment to authenticity, quality and great customer service is borne out by the fact that she is in the shop every day.
