Before you go through the checklist, just make sure you’ve got the following things to hand:

A photo of yourself

A passport-style head and shoulders photo of yourself, saved on your computer/phone and ready to upload. A head and shoulders selfie is fine, just ensure it’s appropriate.

Your seven digit ‘student number’

It starts with an ‘s’ and can be found on the letter sent with this booklet.

Your password

Your password is the one you created when you accessed our Applicant Portal to view your offer or upload documents. If you didn’t do this then your initial password is your date of birth (DDMMYYYY).

What you need to do before you arrive

Apply for university ID card

You can apply for your University of Gloucestershire ID card now. Log on to the Applicant Portal (studentrecords.glos.ac.uk) and upload your photograph, or follow the links from www.glos.ac.uk/myglos. Please upload your photograph before 5 September to ensure your ID card is ready for you to collect when you arrive.

IMPORTANT: When you arrive, you’ll need to bring a form of ID (current signed passport, current UK or EEA photo card driving licence, original birth certificate or EEA state identity card) and your Certificate of Enrolment to receive your ID card. You’ll need to do this within 14 days of the start of your course.

Funding

Sort appropriate funding for your tuition fees and living costs, and set up a student bank account (with an interest free overdraft if possible). Save up a small amount of money over the summer just in case your student loan is delayed by a few days. £100 should be about right.

Enrol

You can complete online enrolment from 5 September – follow the link at www.glos.ac.uk/myglos or head direct to www.glos.ac.uk/enrolment. If you’ve already used the Applicant Portal you should use the same password to access online enrolment. Once you’ve done this you’ll be able to print off your Certificate of Enrolment.

IMPORTANT: Please enrol as soon as possible and within 14 days of the start of your course – a delay may impact on the release of any financial support you may be entitled to.

Accommodation

If you are still looking for somewhere to live, email [email protected] for upcoming house-hunting events or visit www.glos.ac.uk/accommodation for more information.

Meningitis Vaccine

Public Health England has recommended that new first year students (aged under 25) in the UK have the Meningitis ACWY vaccine. This is different from the previous meningitis C vaccine. We strongly encourage you to make an appointment with your local GP to have this vaccine before coming to the university. Visit www.glos.ac.uk/myglos for more information.

Insurance

Ensure you have appropriate insurance arrangements if you’ll be living away from home and not in halls of residence (where contents insurance is included in your rent).

Course induction

Check your course welcome meeting time and course induction timetable at www.glos.ac.uk/myglos and pop it in your diary or phone.

To help start life at university we’ve put together some top tips on what to bring, and what you’ll need to buy when you first arrive. After all, you’ll want to have all the essentials and make it your home.

Essential

IdentificationMake sure people know who you are! Joking apart, you must bring at least one form of ID (current passport, current UK or EEA photo-driving licence, birth certificate or EEA state Identity Card) to receive your University of Gloucestershire ID card. These will also be useful if you haven’t opened a student bank account before you leave home.

Bed linen, towels and coat hangers You’ll need to bring your own duvet, pillows, bedding and towels. Freshly washed sheets need a bit of time to dry, so bring a spare. Don’t forget hangers for your clothes!

Plates, cutlery and kitchenware – but don’t go crazy! If you’re going to live in halls, you’ll need your own eating and cooking utensils. There’s no need to buy an entire kitchenware range, just a few essential items (pots, pans, crockery and cutlery). See what your flatmates arrive with and maybe you can pitch in together for any extras.

Don’t forget your toothbrushMake sure you bring some essential toiletries, including toothbrush and toothpaste, a few cold and flu remedies, some ibuprofen and a plaster or two – they’re sure to come in handy. Washing up liquid, a kitchen cloth/brush and a tea towel will be useful. Once you’re settled in and get to know what else you might need, you can visit a local supermarket to top up on items such as cleaning products. Don’t forget your new tea towel! #dontforgetyourteatowel

Useful

Laptop or mobile devicesBringing your own computer, laptop or tablet is useful as it’ll probably become your portable study, administrative and entertainment centre all in one. However, it’s not essential, as we operate a 24-hour computer suite on each campus during term time.

Stationery Lectures can run at a fast pace, so you’ll need a set of pens to take notes and keep up. Get organised, get yourself a couple of folders or go the whole hog with plastic wallets and file dividers.

Extras

Feel at homeYour favourite personal possessions such as posters, photos, cushions and throws can help you feel more at home in your new room.

Food to share Having sweets, chocolates or biscuits to share is a nice way to get chatting to people. Chocolate digestives go well with a nice cup of tea.

GamesBring a pack of cards or a game or two that you have at home – they’re great for cheap, but fun, nights in.

Door stopIt’s good to have an open door policy in the first few weeks as it’s a great way to make new friends. A door stop (or a heavy text book) will do just the trick. Remember to lock your door when you go out!

Extension leadA simple extension lead equals more sockets and the flexibility to have your room how you like it. But remember, don’t overload them!

Fancy dress If you’ve got any fancy dress outfits, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to wear them, especially during your first two weeks!

But don’t bring!

We know it’s obvious, but just to be sure, please don’t bring large electrical appliances (such as a fridge or microwave), your car (there’s a no motor vehicle rule for students in halls of residence), large musical instruments (such as drums) or your pet hamster (or any other pet)!

What do we provide?

All new students living in halls of residence will get:• Allheating, electric, gasandwater• 24hourwirelessinternetaccess• Contentsinsurance• Useofavacuumcleaner, amop and bucket and a dustpan and brush

Moving into university halls of residence?

You’ll be moving into halls on either Friday 15 September (Pittville Student Village, Original and Townhouse accommodation) or Saturday 16 September (most halls). Please check your room offer or Halls Portal for arrival times. There will be a host of university staff and students (Students’ Union Freshers’ Volunteers) on hand to assist, welcome you and make you feel at home. Our Freshers’ Volunteers are returning students who remember how it feels to move in and can answer your questions or direct you to someone who can.

There will be a welcome BBQ the evening you move in followed by evening activities in the Students’ Union bars on each campus. You’ll receive a halls induction talk over the weekend to introduce you to life in halls and there are other fun activities planned for Sunday.

You can find details about your moving-in day and your room in the Halls Portal where you accepted your room offer. If you have any questions regarding halls accommodation please email [email protected]

Moving into private rented housing or already living locally?

If you’re moving into a private rented house or already living locally you are invited to a welcome talk at 4.30pm, Francis Close Hall campus on Saturday 16 September. This is for all students living locally or moving into private rented accommodation, regardless of whether you’ll be studying or living in Cheltenham or Gloucester.

Meet fellow students

The welcome talk is a great chance for you to speak to student services staff and meet fellow students. Here you’ll have the opportunity to register with the medical centre, enjoy the welcome BBQ and Students’ Union events. If you have any questions about housing please email [email protected]

Over 21?

You will be invited by email to one of our pre-induction events being offered at Park campus on Friday 8, Monday 11 and Thursday 14 September (9.30am-2.30pm). If you would like to express an interest in attending one of these you can email [email protected]

Your new tea towel gives you a flavour for the amazing things you can do, see and visit in Gloucestershire, so #dontforgetyourteatowel when you arrive!

Gloucester

Gloucester is the ninth fastest growing city in the UK with over 60 spoken languages*. We have a rich film heritage – Gloucester Cathedral was a backdrop in Harry Potter while Puzzlewood in the nearby Forest of Dean has featured in many films including Star Wars: The Force Awakens. For sports fans, there’s Gloucester Rugby’s Kingsholm stadium where you can watch Premiership Rugby.

Cheltenham

Cheltenham, home of the famous Gold Cup and internationally renowned literature, science and jazz festivals, opens its doors to 250,000 visitors each year. We also hold our very own University Festival, at the end of the academic year.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll find a buzzing student county steeped in sporting events, live music venues, dancefloors, cocktail bars, real ale pubs and amazing shopping. There are plenty of clubs, bars and pubs in Cheltenham and Gloucester – not forgetting your very own Students’ Union bars on each campus.

Check out www.glos.ac.uk/gloucestershire for more information.
