The key to the Selene chair was thesection of the leg. I think I dealt with theproblem by using a particular technology inthe most proper way possible, but withoutallowing myself to be conditioned by it, oreven inspired by the idea of modernity forits own sake.

us. For years he had wanted to modify theoriginal Gaudi Chair -- designed in 1970and produced for 3 years -- in order to takeadvantage of new materials and advancedtechnologies which could make the chairlighter, stronger, and more elegant.

The New Gaudi is the fulfillment of hisdream and a superb example of the way heimparted beauty and dignity to a modernmaterial. Produced with advanced injectionmoulding, the new design is slim, refined, andcomfortable. The New Gaudi is stackableand perfect for use indoor and out.

As one of the great designers of post-warItaly, Magistretti gave modernism a humanface. His legacy includes a dazzling array ofarchitecture, furniture and everyday objects.He sought to create a new kind of designwhich was simple, functional, rational,elegant -- and anonymous. He wanted toproduce objects which seemed not to havebeen designed but to have evolvedorganically.

Vico was always seeing somethingdifferent and thinking about new projects,says Paolo Imperatori, who worked closelywith him for four years. The New Gaudiwas a rediscovery for him. I remember thejoy in his eyes as we were delivering thefirst model -- which, as usual, had to be

lifted through the window of our office. Amasterpiece of Italian design was comingback to life, in a new form but as if it hadalways existed.
