Helen L. Shafer was born December 12, 1928 at Ryder, North Dakota, the only child of Edwin and Clara (Vasfaret) Sather. Helen’s family farmed in the Ryder area, and she graduated from Ryder High School in 1947. Helen attended Minot State Teachers College until she was united in marriage to David R. Shafer on December 20, 1948 in Ryder, North Dakota. In January 1949 Helen and David took over operations of Helen's parents' farm at rural Ryder for approximately five years. In October 1953 David went to Tioga and was involved in the building of the Tioga Gas Plant. In June 1954 Helen and their son Gary joined David in Tioga when housing became available. Dave and Helen lived in the rural Tioga area until they built a new home in town, in 1961. Helen enjoyed sewing and baking. She always made sure that there was an unlim- ited supply of her famous Peanut Butter Bars when her husband, son, and grandsons went deer hunting. Her two favorite outdoor activities were hunting upland game with David and Gary and their numerous fishing trips to Northern Canada. Helen and Dave enjoyed camping and spent several vacations traveling throughout the United States and Canada. They also enjoyed 13 winters in Yuma, Arizona. Helen was an active member of the Tioga First Lutheran Church. Helen is survived by her son Gary Shafer of Tioga, ND; Rosemarie Shafer of Willis- ton, ND; grandchildren, Sharla Wright of Bozeman, MT, Justin Shafer of Williston, ND, and Nathan (Tia) Shafer of Williston, ND; 12 great-grandchildren, Chase, Dillon, Deavon, Jayden Rose, Jayden John, Maddisen, Jordyn, Christian, Ethan, Dawson, Cayin, and Sophia; two sisters-in-law, Carol (Howard(Deceased)) LaFrance of West Haven, CT, and Opal (Leonard(Deceased)) Zimmer of Williston, ND; two brothers-in- law, Jesse (Arlene(Deceased)) Shafer of Portland, OR, and Herbert (Donna) Shafer of Garrison, ND. Helen’s husband; parents; and an infant son preceded her in death.
