During 2006,grants of $1,250,000 were made to 5 individuals or charitable organizations designatedby them, as detailed on the following page.
These awards are granted in accordance with IRC Section 4945 (g) on an objective andnondiscriminatory basis pursuant to a procedure approved in advance by the InternalRevenue Service.

One of the primary exempt purposes of the Foundation is the awarding of grants throughThe Teresa Heinz Scholars for Environmental Research program. This program providesdoctoral dissertation and master's thesis or project enhancement support for research onemerging environmental issues. Scholars must use the award to enhance the quality oftheir dissertation or master's thesis. During 2006, grants of $127,499 were made to 14individuals detailed in Statement 14 and $51 was expended for administrative expensesrelated to this program.
Research must have public policy relevance that increases society's understanding ofenvironmental problems and their solutions. Individuals and dissertations or thesis orprojects that do not meet these criteria will not be considered.
These awards are granted in accordance with IRC Section 4945 (g) on an objective andnondiscriminatory basis pursuant to a procedure approved in advance by the InternalRevenue Service.

One of the primary exempt purposes of the foundation is the awarding of the HeinzSenate Fellowship which assists the U.S. Senate in identifying and developing newleaders in issues affecting an aging population and senior citizens. During 2006, $11,159was expensed relating to this program.
