What makes Europe special? Immersion Day in Year 4

By Mylo & Lowell 4S

In the morning we made passports we stuck in a photo of our straight faces. Then we wrote our full name and our date of birth.

We were lucky enough to have some parents come in (both of Marius’s parents, George’s dad & Ethan’s dad) so Ethan’s dad

spoke about a town in Spain where they throw big (sometimes rotten) tomatoes at each over and let wild bulls on the street running

with hundreds of people running away from them.

After playtime we voted which country we wanted to go to in Europe. Lots of people chose to go to Romania to see all the wild

bears and vampires there. Nobody really wanted to go to Spain because they didn’t want to get splatted in tomatoes

In the afternoon we split into our tiger (music) and lions (art) groups and we cut out small and big countries in Europe and we tried

to put all the countries together to make a map of Europe it was easy at first because we had our maps to help us until Mr Stevens

took away our maps (What a grumpy boots!). Our final task was to learn about the rivers and mountain ranges of Europe by doing

online research. We used our research to create our own games “Up we go, down we flow!” (based on Snakes and Ladders.)

What a fun day!

Thank you to all of the adults who led session about their home countries: Marius' Dad (Lichtenstein), Marius' Mum (Netherlands)

George's Dad and Max Lewondowski's Mum (Germany), Marie Fabre's Mum (France), Mrs Al-Ramah (Wales), Miss Andrea:

Young Voices

What a trip it was! We are back from another positive and successful Young Voices performance at the O2! And positive was

indeed the word of the day. After months of preparation, the children collected excitedly in the top hall, and after learning our

groups and adults for the day, we travelled to the O2 to take our seats (after a quick lunch stop at the famous venue). The children

represented Heber so well on the streets of London. During the rehearsal, the positive energy was palpable, and little teams of

children collected together to practice lyrics, moves and vocal parts. We even had a tear in our eye when the children joined with

arms around their shoulders to belt out a chorus or two. After dinner the audience arrived, and yet again we tried to guess where

the Heber families were sitting. Not that it mattered, our singing heroes waved our Heber banner and waved enthusiastically at

whoever was waving our way. Needless to say the performance was incredible, and hats off to these young singers who kept up

their energy despite tired eyes and legs. Well done to one and all who helped out, and here’s to the next.

Immersion Day in Year 5

How have the Ancient Greeks influenced the way we live in the world?

On Monday, Year 5 had a fun day getting into the role of Ancient Greeks! We began our day with an Ancient Greek parade,

showing off our costumes. We then took part in our very own mini Olympic Games including a marathon around the block and

javelin throwing! We learned that the Ancient Greeks would crown the winner with a wreath made from olive branches and then

made our own. Later on, we explored pottery as historical sources of evidence and scratched out our own designs. Finally, we

explored some of the most well-known Greek myths and then used these as inspiration to create our own board games. We had a

really fun day and can't wait to learn more about the Ancient Greeks, where we will be focusing on the role of Alexander the Great,

his legacy and the differences in how he is portrayed in a range of media.

Stars of the Week

Every Friday staff pick their Stars of the Week from each

class. The children can earn this prestigious award for

demonstrating one of our core values; Responsibility,

Resilience and Thoughtfulness. Congratulations to the

following children who were chosen as the Star of the

Week in Merit Assembly this week:

Reception – Matilda (Rec C) & Lily (Rec E)

Year 1 – Celia (1H) & Grace (1L)

Year 2 – Dalal (2B) & Swizz (2J)

Year 3 – Freddie (3A) & Inayah (3P)

Year 4 – Alfie (4P) & Mylo (4S)

Year 5 – Habib (5C) & Emme (5M)

Year 6 – Reuben (6F) & Spencer (6K)

Weekly Music Awards

The following awards were announced in our weekly Merit

Assembly.

Key Stage 1: Scarlett from 2B is our Key Stage 1 Music Star of the

Week. With a thirst for learning and a drive to succeed, she will go

places, and in music this is clear. She works on improving her

musical ear with listening activities, aims to improve her vocal pitch

and timing in all singing activities, and is learning quickly how to

read rhythm and pitch on the stave. This week she showed great

resilience in learning a tricky song on the xylophone that impressed

me to no end. What a star.

Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2: It has to be every

member of our Young Voices group at the concert yesterday.

Learning fifteen songs in a matter of months up to performance

standard, including split vocal lines, harmonies and actions, it is no

mean feat but these children did just that. Their attitude, resilience,

energy and positive spirit shone throughout the day. From the

moment we left, to the end of the performance, they did us and

themselves proud. Well done one and all!

The Big Garden Birdwatch

Take part in the world’s largest wildlife survey. A fun way for

your children to engage with the wildlife in their garden, or green

area near them. For more information, including how to help

attract birds to your garden, following this link:

The Big Lecture

On Wednesday this week Year 6 were invited to Alleyn’s

School to attend a lecture delivered by British doctor, TV

presenter and NASA astronautics graduate Kevin Fong.

His fascinating lecture on space focused on the moon

landing in 1969, comparing technology used at the time

with modern day smart phones. He then turned his

attention to Mars, posing a similar challenge to our

children to the one laid down by John F Kennedy in 1963.

It’s safe to say that our students were over the moon after

such an experience and all spaced out on the idea of

being the generation to eclipse achievements of the Moon

landing with a human mission to Mars. Let’s hope it’s

more than just a ‘phase’!
