A ground source heat pump is more suited

to new build properties where it can be

incorporated into the design of the building

and is a popular choice for off mains gas areas.

A property with a large amount of land can

take advantage of using a ground pipework

System one metre under the ground. If this is

not available a vertical borehole can be used,

however this is more of a specialist application.

Air Source Heat Pumps use the outside air as

an energy source. The heat extracted is then

converted into a useable heat which can be

used within the property’s heating system or to

meet the hot water requirements. An air source

heat pump is located outside of a property and

can be installed into new build and retrofitted

into existing properties. They typically operate at

temperatures of around 45°C and are suitable

for low temperature heating Systems such as

underfloor heating, low temperature radiators or

fan convection heaters.

With the high insulation available in new build

properties, air source heat pumps are well suited

to maintain the heat and reduce the need for

fossil fuels. With a retrofit application, care must

units will not only supply your heating and hot

water requirements, but also your mechanical

ventilation, making them a cost effective choice

when moving away from gas fired appliances.

The System extracts air from the moist warm

areas of the building such as bathrooms, kitchens

and utility rooms. Heat is removed from the air

and transferred to the heat pump before being

discharged outside. The heat absorbed from

the air is then transferred to a water based

System that can heat the building and warm the

domestic hot water.

Demonstrating our own belief in renewable energy technologies at PTS, we installed a number of renewable products at our head office in Crick, Northamptonshire, back in April 2012.

The technologies that help to power our building include

a solar PV system consisting of 120 250kW panels,

which work alongside a unique Solar Edge inverter

which converts DC to AC electricity. This inverter was

essential to compensate for shading on one part of the

roof and ensures a high level of efficiency.

In addition, an Air to Air Heat pump was installed. The

highly efficient, renewable energy product uses outside

air to heat and cool the inside of PTS head office. It

comprises of an indoor and outdoor unit which convert

energy in the air into heat for the building. The heat

pump also has ion-technology air purification, ideal for

allergy sufferers.

This installation was part of a low carbon approach, with

the approximate annual energy generated by the solar

PV modules at 26,500 kWh, the system offsets the total

electricity consumption of the building by around 8%.
