Thanks…..

This month’s thanks go out to three committee members who without their untiring hard work, your newsletter not only wouldn’t be compiled and edited (and in the future printed!) but the content would be much reduced! They are - Cyril whose tireless work ensures that you get your newsletter. He compiles it, edits it, along with co-editor Barry, and in the future will also be printing it! And Brian whose input over the years has led to over 217 articles being submitted and printed! And of course we include Jim, without whose skill and dedication the many thousands of copies produced over the years would not have been printed We, the committee are sure that we speak for you all when we say THANK YOU.

….and finally, a seasonal joke(?)

A Group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the Lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour the manager came over and asked them to move. “But why?” they asked as they walked off. “Because,“ he said “I can’t stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.”

Anna Delaney has sent us this for POETRY CORNER

Today I’ll see my Granny and I will stay for tea.

We’ll have scones and cherry cake made specially for me.

She’s very old, my Granny.

Much older than the Queen. She tells me ancient stories of all the things she’s seen.

Of trams, maids and milk carts

things that I don’t know that she remembers very well

from days long ago.

She always wears a pretty hat secured with a pin.

I wonder if it hurts her when it goes into her skin.

I like to sit upon her lap

and smell her scent of rose this is Granny’s favourite one

I sniff it on her clothes.

She never uses make-up. Well, sometimes red lipstick.

Not a bit like my mummy, she’s always wearing it.

I haven’t got a Grandad

which I thought very odd “Gone to heaven,” Granny said

“Went to live with God.”

When I am very old Let’s say ninety-three

I’d like to look like Granny And have children on my knee.

Continued from previous page

Four decks above were for action stations plus ammunition and three part-upper decks front and rear were for officers, soldiers and steering gear.

The Mary Rose was raised from her watery depths in 1982, remaining under water spray for a further eight years. Viewing from five separate gallery levels of only half of the galleon, one can imagine its operational complexity when under full sail and sense the intrigue and frustration during battle conditions.

It was recorded that the first “breech-loaded” cannon was

used from the Mary Rose, also

6” diameter cannon balls fitted with 18” flat blades projecting from opposite sides were used at close quarters, and when

fired, spun like circular saw blades, causing tremendous destruction to rigging and sails. Cabinets displaying many recovered possessions including coins, shoes, clothes, cloths, tools and much more, portray a magnificent image of a mariner’s lifestyle and duties while at sea.

Sadly, time limited viewing. Coach waiting, members somewhat weary, but we arrived back on time. A good journey home. Thanks as always to our organisers and driver; and with members, including myself, looking forward with anticipation to yet another great outing in December. Your Roving Reporter,

Brian Smedley

Hertfordshire police are looking for a man who stabbed 10pepole in Watford with a knitting needle.

They think he may be following some kind of pattern.

The historic city of Portsmouth is itself a place that on a clear day offers spectacular sea views. The future proposed skyline simulates that of New York. It could be said planners are living in “cuckoo land” – Who knows?!!

Our outing was of course to

view the Mary Rose, housed in the prodigious modernised exhibition building. This incorporates leading edge technology which provides unobstructed viewing from five different balcony levels despite the many environmental, constructional and safety standards required.

Supporting Mary Rose was an amazing achievement, designed using steelwork eliminating possible movement and moisture, so preserving the galleon’s timbers.

The Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s flagship, didn’t sink first time of sailing but had a successful distinguished career for thirty-four years (1511 – 1545). But why did it sink? (No one really knows.) Theories put forward include: 1 Gun ports too close to the waterline.

8

Outing Report - The Mary RoseThe Mary RoseThe Mary RoseThe Mary Rose - October 2017

2 Enemy gunfire or simple human error. 3 Firing all guns on one side while caught in strong winds when crossing the English channel. 4 All lower gun ports open for action could have caused flooding when refitted with additional heavy guns plus an extra contingent of soldiers. 5 A cannon ball fired from a French ship hit low in the hull enabling water to flood the lower deck, making the galleon unstable and suddenly turning North aiming to reach shallow water at Spitbank. Your guess is as good as mine!! Recorded manpower at the time of sinking was 185 soldiers, 200 mariners and 30 gunners (mostly in their teens or early 20’s), housed in extremely cramped conditions, as portrayed throughout the exhibition.

The galleon’s structure consisted of seven decks. Two below the water line were mostly for equipment and maintenance. Continued over

!!!!! LOSELY PARK IMPORTANT NOTICE !!!!

This is an important notice for people coming on the outing to Losely Park on Monday 11th December. Please note that the departure time from Gadebridge will now be 09.00 am not 10.00 am as notified in the notice and flyer. We will not be able to wait for latecomers. Apologies for this change.

Heart to Herts Visit to Museum of London Docklands

On Tuesday 13th

February 2018

Departing Gadebridge Car Park at 09.00 am

Our first outing in 2018 is to the museum of London Docklands. The museum is housed in a listed warehouse on the West India Quay and tells the story of London’s river, port and people from the arrival of the Romans to the construction of Canary Wharf. The galleries include ‘Sailortown’, an atmospheric re-creation of the streets around Wapping riverfront as they would have appeared in the early 19th century and the latest addition, ‘London Sugar and Slavery’, which tells the story of London’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. Canary Wharf with its many shopping opportunities, coffee bars and restaurants is also close by. There is a café and restaurant, and, of course, shop in the museum.

Pauline White 01442 40593

The cost of this outing is £18 and it is open to the member and up to three guests. The deadline for applications is Friday 29th December 2017.

…...from Denny and Pauline

There will not be an outing in January 2018. Any questions about outings generally in 2018, please ring Denny on 01582 460565. A full list of outings for 2018 will be included in the Events Calendar which will be sent out with the December KIT.

I asked my computer why it was running so slowly.

The computer said “I’m Tired!

“Why is that?” I asked

“It’s been a long day and I’ve had a hard drive” came the reply.

Volunteering Can Be Rewarding and Fun

Come and join our small friendly team of volunteers serving refreshments on a rota basis at the Cardiac Rehabilitation Classes which are held at Bennetts End Community Centre on Tuesday mornings. You get to meet the NHS rehab team members, the class attendees (potential new H2H members) and experience the satisfaction of giving something back for the all benefits we received at that time.

The task involves turning up at Bennetts End (at around 9:30 am) armed with a pint of milk and a tea towel, making and serving tea, coffee or cold squashes for about a dozen people, and washing up afterwards. We operate a 3-monthly rota, and

currently everyone serves on average 2 times in 3 months. Some days there is a single class and sometimes 2 classes. Some volunteers carry out the task alone; others prefer to work as a pair. You will be offered as many introductory sessions with

an experienced volunteer as you like to get to know the people and facilities.

So, if you would be willing to give up a couple of hours on an occasional Tuesday morning, or would like to know more, please get in touch with John Chestnutt on 01442 253984 or e-mail [email protected].

Cardiac Rehab Volunteers (see previous page)

Among those who will be leaving the Cardiac Refreshments Team in January are Brian and Pauline O’Ready. Pauline has been serving refreshments at Rehab since 1963’ and Brian nearly as long, beginning in the Gym in Tudor Wing at Hemel Hospital (when it was a real hospital!), then in Verulam Wing and now at Bennetts End; the longest serving ambassadors for Heart to Herts by a very long way.

Pauline recalls that when she began, with Penny Jones, Sue Dobbs, Sylvia Bartlett and Betty Morgan the team did administrative tasks as well as serving drinks.

Thank you seems hardly adequate for such service but it is with true sincerity that we say THANK YOU to Brian and Pauline, and we salute you with great admiration. Why don’t you sit back and make yourselves a cup of tea for a change! The Committee.

100 Club 2017

Readers may like to know that the 100 Club which ended last month raised £206 for Group Funds, which shows the value of this endeavour.

A financial market trader from Bishops Stortford bought two horses with his Christmas bonus, but he couldn’t tell them apart so he asked a neighbouring farmer what he should do. The farmer suggested that the trader should measure them. Next day the trader came back triumphantly and said “Thanks, it worked. The white horse is two inches taller than the black one.”
