Albertsons Adds Second Sculpture

Many of Brea’s sculptures are in-

stalled as part of new development, while others are added as a part of businesses growing their exist-ing footprint. Such is the case with the Albertsons Distribu-tion Center at Lam-bert Road and Puente Street. In 2002, when the center was first built, Albertsons com-missioned public art by artist Laddie John Dill titled Cobalt Ba-sin and Range. As a part of the facility’s expansion, Albertsons installed a second work of his. Tribus

blends concrete, tempered glass, and various minerals and oxides to achieve the fantastic color patterns.

Blackstone Community Art WalkSaturday, June 10, at 10 a.m.

Come check out the eight new additions in the Black-stone neigh-

borhood. Remarks begin at Wildcat-ter’s Park (3220 E. Santa Fe Rd.) fol-lowed by a leisure-ly walk past Marlo Bartels’ creations. These colorful mo-saic sculptures seamlessly blend nature, history and art.

Event guests should park in the lot at Wildcatter’s Park on the north-west corner of Va-lencia Avenue and Santa Fe Road. For more information, please call Jenn Colacion at 714-671-4452.

To enhance communication with the Brea busi-ness community representatives from various

Brea businesses are invited to join an informal roundtable discussion with the Mayor, Mayor Pro-Tem, City Manager, and other City staff. Each roundtable is limited to a small group of partici-pants who are encouraged to bring any questions, ideas or issues they would like to discuss. If you are interested in attending a future City/Business Connect, please call 714-671-4421.

#ShopBrea: Shopping Green Some say shopping online is better for the environ-

ment. However, a paper published by the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics, finds that isn’t always true. Benefits of shopping online can be eroded with the im-pacts of carbon emissions for deliveries or with orders coming from multiple sites, plus pick up, return or exchanges on items. In-store purchases are also less likely to be returned, saving time as well as energy.

Luckily, Brea offers a wide va-riety of stores within a short walk, bike, or car ride so you can meet shopping needs in one quick trip. Plus, the sales tax from shopping in local stores helps pay for impor-tant City services.

Brea Trail Opens in Birch Hills Golf CourseAnother portion of

The Tracks at Brea Trail, which travels through Birch Hills Golf Course, has now opened to the public. This 0.6 mile stretch can be ac-cessed at Birch Street near the main entrance of the golf course by Associated Road and at Kraemer Boulevard near Orbiter Street. Be sure to look for the replica of a Pacific Red Line electric train that once ran through Brea and enjoy reading the panels that tell the story of the Red Line.

Construction is underway for two other sections of the trail. Segment 2, lo-cated between the Brea Canyon Channel and Brea Boulevard, will add 0.3 mile to the trail. In addition to the pedestrian path and paved bike trail, there will be a seating plaza as well as stairs to link to the completed Segment 1.

Segment 6 starts at Kraemer Boulevard adjacent to the Loftus Flood Con-trol Channel and meanders to Valencia Avenue where it intersects Nasa Street. Trail users can use the signal to cross Valencia and connect with the La Flo-resta perimeter trail.

Amenities will also be added to Segment 3, which is a 0.8 mile section be-tween Brea Boulevard and State College Boulevard. These will include a restroom, seating, drinking fountain, bike racks, butterfly garden and fitness equipment.

Construction on trail Segments 2, 3 and 6 is anticipated to be completed by fall 2017. All of these construction sites are closed to the public for safety. Seg-ment 4, located between State College Boulevard and Birch Street, is currently out to bid. The City anticipates awarding a construction contract on this final segment in June of this year.

Brea Olinda High School and Brea Junior High are among

several hundred in the state being honored with the California Gold Ribbon Schools Award for mak-ing gains in implementing the academic and performance stan-dards set by the State Board of Education. The State Department of Education created the award to honor schools in place of the California Distinguished Schools Program, which is on hiatus while California creates new assess-ment, accountability and continu-ous improvement systems.

Each year this award rotates between elementary and secondary schools. Statewide, 477 campuses ap-plied for the award, and 275 were selected. The proce-dure involved each school selecting a Model Program/Practice to highlight their excellence.

Additionally, Arovista Elementary School and Lau-rel Elementary Magnet School of Innovation and Career Exploration have been selected by Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and the Campaign for Business and

Education Excellence (CBEE) as two of 1,866 public schools in California to receive the title of 2016 Honor Roll school. The Hon-or Roll is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and highlight successful practices that improve outcomes for students. Schools receiving this distinction from leaders in the California academic and busi-ness communities have demon-strated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time and reduction in

achievement gaps among student populations. Brea Olinda Unified Superintendent Dr. Brad Ma-

son congratulated these schools say-ing, “We are thrilled to receive these validations that are indicative of how hard our teachers, administrators and parent community work on behalf of the students in BOUSD. Our schools are exceptional.”
