At St. Joseph Hospital, delivering high-quality, safe care is our priority. I am pleased to share with you that for the third year in a row St. Joseph Hospital has been recognized by The Joint Commission as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures, which puts us in the top 10% nationwide for quality care. St. Joseph Hospital is one of only two hospitals in New Hampshire and one of only 182 hospitals nationwide to have achieved this distinction three years in a row! The Top Performer distinction recognizes high-quality, safe care for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.

This kind of achievement is only possible through the hard work and dedication of our outstanding medical staff, Magnet nursing team and compassionate employees at every level of the organization.

When Jason joined the Lighten Up Nashua program with a group of coworkers last June, his goal was to take off about thirty pounds from his 332-pound frame. Having dieted off and on in the past, he knew that he could achieve that modest goal, but his immediate success with the program encouraged him to set a new, unprecedented weight loss goal: Lose 100 pounds in six months.

To date, Jason is well on his way to reaching his new goal, having lost an astounding 82 pounds in just four months. He finished the June session as the Top Male winner, losing an impressive 21.5% of his body weight and reducing his waistline from 42 inches to 34. In addition, Jason has seen added health benefits, including improvements in both his blood pressure and cholesterol.

Jason is currently participating in his second Lighten Up Nashua session. He says he finds the program easy to follow and the competition a terrific motivator to keep him from falling back into old bad habits. “Last session, I’d check the standings on the web page and think, ‘I want to see my name in first place,’” he says. “Then, once I got to first place, I knew I had to keep working hard to stay there, not just for me, but for my team.”

The key to his success was making many small changes to his daily routine. “Losing weight for me has been more mental than physical,” he explains. “I used to think I needed two sandwiches, but now I know I will be satisfied with one. I used to drink five to ten cans of regular soda per day, but I cut that out entirely. I used to pick up convenient foods or just eat carelessly; now I think about things like choosing a whole wheat wrap instead of a sub roll to cut back carbs, or choosing turkey over a peanut butter sandwich to get the same protein without the fat.”

For exercise, Jason started off by walking a mile per day, but had to step up his routine once that became too easy. “When you’re over three hundred pounds, you’re sweating after a couple of blocks. Now I have to jog just to break a sweat.” He now walks between two and three miles a day and does some light weight training a few times a week.

Jason says he never misses an opportunity to tell people how the Lighten Up Nashua program helped him achieve a healthier lifestyle. “People say I look ten years younger,” he laughs, “and I feel that way. I would recommend Lighten Up Nashua to anyone, even people who just want to lose ten pounds. It has made a huge difference in my life.”
