India

gets

its

1st

ever

indigenous

rotavirus

vaccine

India’s 1st completely indigenous and affordable rotavirus diarrhoea vaccine has been

introduced after 28 years of hard work. The results of the Phase III clinical trial of the

Rotavac vaccine was announced at an international conference that declared efficiency level

at 56% in the 1st year of life. The oral vaccination is administered to infants in a 3 dose

course at the ages of 6, 10 and 14 weeks alongside routine immunizations recommended at

these ages.

Commercial production of the same will be initiated after it gets clearance from Drug

Controller General of India (DCGI). Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech International Ltd. which

was associated in the development of vaccine candidates and clinical trials has declared a

price of approximately INR 53.92, a relatively much lower price than other rotavirus vaccinescurrently available in the market.

USFDA endows approval for 2 drugs to Aurobindo Pharma

Hyderabad based Aurobindo Pharma Ltd. has garnered the approval of United States Food

and Drug Administration (USFDA) to manufacture and market 2 drugs. One being, thegeneric version of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals' manufactured Flomax

(Tamsulosin hydrochloride) capsule used for treatment of symptoms of enlarged prostate in

men. The other being generic version of Pharmacia & Upjohn's Cleocin Pediatric

(Clindamycin Palmitate Hydrochloride) used for treatment of serious infections caused by

susceptible anaerobic bacteria in minors.

The products are expected to be launched soon and would thereby add to Aurobindo

Pharma’s Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) approvals from USFDA to 190.

GSK verticals brandsswap

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare has signed a brandsswap deal with its associatecompany GSK Pharmaceuticals with a motive to reach its revenue target in the next 3 years.

The companies have agreed to interchange select brands and independently market, sell and

distribute them. The companies will initiate the agreement with GSK Consumer marketing

and selling GSK Pharma's OTC calcium and vitamin supplement Ostocalcium. On the other

hand, GSK Pharma will market and distribute products under the consumer division's

specialized arm Glaxo Nutrition including Actibase and Actigrow nutrition supplements.




The companies have strategically decided to stimulate its product distribution by making use

of their respective negotiation strengths.

Kolkata gets

its

1st

super

-specialty

mental

health

facility

The 1st ever super‐specialty mental health facility Addlife Caring Minds has been launched in

Kolkata. Some of the services offered include psychotherapy, counseling and treatment along

with psych‐social rehabilitation and follow‐up services.

The hospital is located over a 4,000 square feet area and has corporate clients such as

Ambuja Realty, Patton and Kolkata Police among others.

Biocon and Trinity collaborate to encourage genetic research

Bengaluru based Biocon has entered into a partnership with Dublin‐based Trinity College to

support Indian students in genetic research. Biocon will sponsor two annual sponsorships

that would give meritorious candidates an opportunity to work in Trinty Collegelaboratories.

The sponsorship program has been especially designed to encourage innovation in the field

of biotechnology.

GE launches healthcare technology lounge on wheels GE Healthcare has very recently launched its 1st healthcare technology experiential lounge

on wheels under its Mission Healthier India in Coimbatore. The entire set up has been built at

a cost of INR 4 mn that comprises of equipment such as ECG, scan, critical tools and infant

care technologies. The mission was focused at development of women and maternal infant

health, cardiac diseases and critical care in small towns and villages of Tamil Nadu.

With launch of this lounge, GE is aggressively promoting the technology at hospitals, nursing

homes and clinics in 50 towns of Tamil Nadu to raise awareness about the significance of

early detection of diseases.

Regulatory

Virology labs in Tamil Nadu government medical colleges Tamil Nadu state government would be soon establishing Molecular Virology Laboratories in

Medical College Hospitals in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. An allocation of

INR 200 mn has been made for each of the laboratories and in time would be replicated in all

other medical college hospitals in the state. The laboratory is being set up primarily to avoid

delay in diagnosis of diseases such as Dengue, Chickungunya and swine flu.




Apart from an investment on laboratory, Tamil Nadu government is also allocating funds for

improvement of the state’s Indian Medicine. Lifestyle clinics are also in plans to be set up for

treatment of blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, cancer and backbone related ailments.

New government hospital to be launched in South Delhi The Delhi state government is in plans to establish a 200‐bedded hospital on a fast‐track

basis at AmbedkarNagar area of Southern Delhi. The hospital would have OPD, general

wards, separate mother and child care wards, advanced laboratory, a blood bank and

intensive care units.

The state government has completed the basic outlay of the project and hospital construction

is expected to commence in Sep 2013.

GE, Ensocare signs agreement with Maharashtra government to establish advanced

diagnostic centers

Wipro GE Healthcare and Ensocare (of Enso Group) have collaborated to form a public

private partnership (PPP) with Maharashtra state government for establishing advanced

diagnostic facilities in the state. The agreement will see the establishment of diagnostic

facilities at 22 government district and women hospitals.

The diagnostic facilities will be offering services at government recommended rates with

additional benefits for 'Below Poverty Line' (BPL) card holders who will be offered free

diagnostic services under the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana (RGJAY) scheme.

Expansion Plans

Star Dental plans expansion

Star Dental is in plans to invest INR 1,500 mn in the next 3 years time to expand operations

across the country. It is in plans to open 300 clinics across India by 2017 of which 40 of them

would be company owned clinics. The company owned clinics is expected to be launched by

2014.

The dental chain that initiated operation in 2012 in India set up 11 clinics across DelhiNational Capital Region (NCR) under the brand name 'Clove' and with the round of fresh

investments, it would most likely focus on North India, including NCR and Punjab.

HCG stake purchase in BACC to aid fertility centers’ expansion

Bengaluru based cancer care provider HealthCare Global Enterprises has acquired a majority

stake in fertility care provider Bangalore Assisted Conception Centre (BACC). With this stake




purchase, the 4 fertility centers across Bengaluru that were previously independently

operated have been rebranded as Milann ‐ The Fertility Center.

The new entity is expected to expand in other towns and cities including tier II and tier IIItowns. The Indian fertility market is gradually garnering significance with more investors

taking interest.
