Health & SafetyTerry Smith – Head of SHEQ (Projects)

HEALTH AND SAFETY IS VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR BUSINESSHealth and Safety is a core value of Balfour Beatty Rail.

You might call it our licence to operate.

But we can always do more to prevent harm.

We know that everyone is different, but we need shared expectations and common rules.

OURHEALTH & SAFETY

NEW BEHAVIOURS AND A NEW CULTUREThis is not just about another set of rules.

Our Safety Essentials set out the safety behaviours we expect from everyone.

Our Lifesaving Rules provide direction associated with the main threats to life in our industry.

And supporting both is a Just Culture process, which we will use to better understand why people break rules and make sure we take the appropriate action.

OURHEALTH & SAFETY

HOW DO WE ALL GO HOME SAFE EVERY DAY?We believe it starts with some basics.

We call them our Safety Essentials.

These are five simple behaviours that focus our

attention on how we think, what we believe and

what that means in action.

They are about your personal attitude,

and how you apply that attitude throughout the

day.

OURSAFETYESSENTIALS

HOW WERE THE RULES DEVELOPED?

They were developed by our industry for our industry.

They focused on main threats to life in our industry

over the past 12 years.

Over a thousand people were asked for their input.

Contractors and unions were all consulted.

OURLIFESAVINGRULES

THE RULES ANDTHE WAY WE APPLYTHEM WILL HELP:

• Promote a fair culture by finding and

tackling the root cause of rule breaking.

• Provide a clear push-back against unsafe requests.

• Provide positive responses and solutions.

• Make sure everyone takes responsibility.

• Prioritise the safety measures that save lives.

• Highlight areas where we can do better.

OURLIFESAVINGRULES

THE KEY RISK AREASOur Lifesaving Rules are grouped into six key risks:

1.Contact with the train

2.Working with electricity

3.Working at height

4.Working with moving equipment

5.Driving

6.Taking responsibility

OURLIFESAVINGRULES

OUR JUST CULTURE A CULTURE OF

FAIRNESS90% of breaches are probably honest mistakes.

We want to understand them and take action to stop them happening again.

Our old system of safety may be a cause.

Anyone can put their hand up to admit when they’ve made a mistake.
