Foundation “Fore-ges”ahead at annual golF outing
Despite a raining week and the threat of another day of rain, Orleans Community Health Foundation’s 29th An-nual Golf Tournament on June 19 was a great success. Ninety golfers scored a beautiful day of golf at Hickory Ridge Country Club and enjoyed the ban-quet that followed. Proceeds from the tournament helped the Foundation push past the halfway point of our Ultrasound Campaign, raising just over $20,000. As Orleans Community Health is dedicated to pro-viding quality healthcare for the residents of Orleans
and the surrounding counties, this state-of-the-art ultrasound will provide traditional ultrasound
capabilities, specializing in dense tissue detection for mammog-raphy patients and can address bariatric health concerns. Thanks to our sponsors in-cluding Resource Group, Lawley Insurance, Lamparelli Construc-tion, Eastern Managed Print Network, Univera Healthcare, Professional Emergency
Services PLLC, Takeform, The Southcott Agency, OCH Medical Staff, Radiology Solutions and Angelica Textiles. We offer many thanks to all the
volunteers who helped make the Orleans Commu-nity Health Foundation’s golf event a great time for everyone.
At the close of the OCH Foundation’s Annual Golf Tournament, the Foundation has now raised more than $90,000 of our $175,000 Ultrasound Campaign goal. As we get closer to the goal, the staff at Medina Memorial as well as the Foundation, watch our Campaign thermometer that is on display in the Radiology Department’s waiting room. “If we don’t change, we don’t grow.”“If we don’t change, we don’t grow.” ― Anatole France
Change for all of us is inevitable. The Orleans Community Health Foundation has changed and grown since its beginning in 1981, but one thing has remained the same: Our commitment to the advancement of healthcare initiatives for the com-munity. Our current campaign to raise $175,000 for the purchase of ultrasound equipment for Me-dina Memorial Hospital is an example. This new state-of-the-art equipment will provide hospital patients with the same quality of care as other patients with the same quality of care as other major imaging centers in Western New York. Over the past year and a half, the Foundation Board has had the pleasure of working with Jim Moody, our Executive Director who accomplished great things and kicked off our current campaign, which has now raised more than $90,000. We wish him the best of luck on his re-location to Florida, and welcome Patricia Fagan, a long-time Foundation Board member who is serving as our Interim Executive Director. As always, we are excited about the work of the Foundation and at the end of our search that is currently underway, we look forward to welcom-ing the Foundation’s next Executive Director. The Foundation Board is thankful for Jim Moody’s
achievements. His achievements. His work inspires us and provides us with a clear path forward. While some things are chang-ing, Patricia and Heather Smith, our Special Events & Program Coor-dinator, continue to work on our upcoming fund-raising events, the Mega Drawing and Treasure Island. Our Mega Drawing will be held Tuesday, August 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Leonard Oakes Estate Winery and in-cludes a chicken BBQ dinner. It promises to be a great time for all, and tickets to win one of 30 cash prizes can be purchased by calling the Foundation office at 585-798-8061. Be assured that one thing will never change - the Foundation needs you! Please support the Orleans Community Health Foundation so that we can continue to positively impact the lives of our community members!
A celebration marking the completion of renova-tions at the Residential Health Care Facility at Me-dina Memorial Hospital was held at the North Wing Solarium on April 9. Fundraising by the Orleans Community Health Care Foundation was an integral part of the project that began in 2011. Renovations completed on the project included new sprinkler and HVAC systems, and nurses’ call systems. State-of-the-art patient beds, patient ar-moires, bedroom and bathroom updates of new ceilings, energy efficient windows, lighting, painting, flooring, and sinks were also done. A new dining and kitchen area with a buffet station was built along with an updated nurses’ station that will provide better monitoring of residents. In addition, a solarium was added to North Wing that allows residents to enjoy sunshine year round in a relaxing natural atmosphere.
Jim Moody, Assemblyman Steve Hawley, Sandra Madjeski, Foundation Board President, Christina Khashalani and Wendy Jacobson, Interim Hospital CEO unveiled the Donor Wall that features bright tulips and the names of donors that welcomes residents and visitors to North Wing.

the boWen legaCy George Bowen of Medina was a 20-year
chairman of the hospital board during the mid-1900s who is remembered for his hands-on approach. He watched surgeries, spoke to people about their needs and recruited physicians. His
powerful legacy as a leader continues today.
Following the Leader
Roland Howell, a life-long Medina resident re-members George Bowen well. The photo of George Bowen with his hat in his hand that hangs in the Medina Memo-rial Hospital lobby is one of Ro-land’s favorites. “It shows exactly what kind of man George was. He rolled up his sleeves and got things done,” says Roland. Roland, who serves on the Orleans Community Health Foun-dation’s Board of Directors, was a member of the Medina Memorial Hospital Board in the late 1970s. “My grandparents gave money to build this hospital, and I plan on leaving a gift,” he says. “It is
imperative to have good health care nearby. Strategically, it serves us well as the next closest hospital is a good 30-minute drive. If you have a good hospital, especially with emergency care, it attracts good physicians, new businesses and residents.”
A Gift that Grows
Roland’s wife Jean, a kindergarten teacher in the Medina School District for many years, passed away in 2013. Jean started Roland’s wine making hobby by giving him a “Make Your Own” wine kit years ago. His interest grew along with the vineyard he planted in his own backyard. But Roland’s vines aren’t the only things he tends
to. Roland decided to be a part of the Bowen Legacy by leaving a the Bowen Legacy by leaving a gift in his will to the Orleans gift in his will to the Orleans Community Health Foundation. The Orleans Community Health Foundation is made up of volunteer community members from Orleans, Eastern Niagara and Genesee counties. We raise funds through special events, memorials, bequests and our Healthier U program in support of Orleans Community Health and its continuous development of innovative healthcare opportunities at the Medina Memorial Hospital and its off-site locations. As we work closely with Orleans Community Health, we are pleased to share a bit about Wendy Jacobson, the Interim Orleans Community Health President and CEO. Wendy Jacobson, Interim CEO of Orleans Com-munity Health, joined the organization in 2012. At that time her role was the Director of Quality and Risk management for the system. During her tenure, Orleans Community Health has achieved Core Mea-sure scores at or above the National Average. The system also was a recipient of the SHIP award for excellence This honor was awarded to the hospital based on the number of Core measure scores above the National Average- one of the best performers in NYS. Wendy accepted the role of COO/CNO in Febru-
ary 2014 and worked towards the Critical Access designation for the hospital and implementing a new Accreditation with Det Norske Veritas (DNV). As Interim CEO, Wendy will continue to focus on Primary Care recruitment for Albion and Medina, implementation of a new Emergency Department Physician group, Patient Experience and the Critical Access Hospital desig-nation. Wendy has been a nurse for 28 years with experience in acute care, long term care, education, litigation, quality improvement, risk management, reg-ulatory surveillance, neurological care and executive leadership in the for profit and not for profit areas. She obtained her Master’s degree in Nursing and became a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner 16 years ago. Wendy is originally from the Albany, New York area and has lived in Holley since 2012. Wendy is a proud Mom of two sons and a daughter and a grand-mother. In addition to spending time with her children she loves to hunt and fish.

The Orleans Community Health Foundation hosted a thank you dinner to recognize the hospital’s volunteers and the foundation’s 75 volunteers for their dedication and the time that they donated to Orleans Community Health over the past year. A reception was held at the Garden View Bed & Breakfast in Medina on April 30, which allowed volunteers to enjoy fellowship and to know that their work is very much appreciated. Each volunteer received a flowering plant and a pin as a token of appreciation for their time and talents they so generously give. The Foundation is thankful for all of our volunteers whose efforts help us to succeed through the dedication that they show.
