IN THIS SECTION: SECTION B MEN’S HAIR the long and short of it Barbers see resurgence in older styles, experimentation By William Axford [email protected]; 810-433-6792 Like music, movies and fashion trends, men’s hair- styles change from decade to decade to reflect the tastes of the times. From powdered wigs in the 1800s to the spiked-gelled hair of the 1990s, men have tried just about every hairstyle to make a statement. Nowadays, bar- bers are seeing men sample hairstyles from multiple de- cades and genera- tions, in pursuit of the perfect style. “It almost runs the whole gamut, from closely cropped to longer hair,” said Mike Conway, owner of Mr. C’s Barber and Styling in Fenton. “In the ‘70s, it was mostly long hair. The ‘60s had mostly short hair. Now it’s multigenerational, not just a set thing anymore. There’s a variety.” Conway changed his method of haircutting from nding a style that matches someone’s face to working with what the client wants, due to the numerous ways to dress hair. The barber said he spends a great amount of time talking and listening to clients during the process of guring out what cut would suit them best. For Conway, an ideal haircut would be shorter, off the collar and ear. While some men continue to experiment with cuts from different eras, others opt for a ‘classic,’ greaser-like look. Zac Minok, owner of Consolidated Barbershop in Flint and a 2004 Fenton High School graduate, de- scribes his haircutting style as “traditional,” with a European inuence. Pompadours, which Minok frequently cuts, is popular within subcultures but is becoming more frequent in mainstream media. See MEN’S HAIR on 5B ‘‘ With traditional barbershops, you can tell the difference in a haircut. There’s a straight razor on the neck and around the ears. CHEAT SHEETTHE AWESOME DAD

14 fatherhood tips they should’ve handed out at the delivery room

Cherish your time with them. One  thing  that  will  amaze  you  is  how quickly the years will fly. Spend as much time as you can with  them, and make  it quality, loving time. Try to be present as much as possible, don’t let your mind drift away, as they can sense that.

It gets easier. The  first  couple of months can be the most difficult, when  the baby  is brand  new  and wants  to  feed  at all  hours  of  the night. It gets eas-ier,  as  they  get  a regular  sleeping pattern.  The  first couple  of  years are  also  a  lot more  demanding than  later  years, and  as  they  hit middle  school they  become  al-most functioning, independent adults.

Don’t look at anything as “mom” duties — share responsibilities.Some men still look at certain duties as “mom” duties, but don’t be one of those dads.  Get  involved  in  everything,  and share  the  load  with  your  baby  mama. Changing diapers, giving baths, getting them dressed, even feeding them.

Love conquers all.This one sounds corny, but it should be at the center of your dad operating phi-losophy: above all, show your children love.  When  you’re  upset,  instead  of

yelling, show them love. When they are upset, show them love. When they least expect  it,  show  them  love. Everything else is just details.

Kids like making decisions.Your job is to allow them to make deci-

sions,  but within the  parameters that you set. Give them  a  choice between  two healthy  break-fasts,  for  exam-ple,  rather  than allowing  them to  eat  a  bowl of  sugar  if  they choose to.

A little patience goes a long way.As  a parent,  it  is easy  to  lose your patience and tem-per. However, al-lowing  yourself

to react in anger or frustration is not the best thing for your child, and you must remember that. That means you need to take a deep breath, or a walk, when you start to lose your patience.

Sense of humor required. There will be  times when your child does something that might make you blow  your  lid  —  writing  in  crayon all  over  the walls  is  a  good  one,  or sneaking  out  and  taking  your  car  to meet up with friends. While you need to  teach  your  child  not  to  do  these things, it’s better to just laugh at the humor in the situation.

Read to them, often.Whether you’re a reader or not, reading to your children is crucial. It gets them in the habit  of  reading, and prepares them for  a  lifetime  of learning.  It  gives you  some  special time  together, and becomes  a  tradi-tion  your  child will cherish.

Don’t be the absent dad.Always,  always set aside time each day and each week for your children. Don’t let anything violate this sacred time. And at those big moments in your child’s life — a soccer game, a mu-sic recital, a science fair — do your very best to be there. It means the world.

Let them play.Kids really develop through playing — and while  it might  seem  obvious,  you should  allow  them  as  much  free  play as possible. That’s  aside  from TV  and

video games, aside from reading, aside from anything structured or educational. Just  let  them play, make  things up and

have fun.

Spark their imagination.Play  with  your kids, creating forts, imagining  you’re explorers  or  char-acters  in  a  movie or  book  …  the possibilities  are endless, and you’ll have  as much  fun as they will.

Learn the “firm no.”Parents who don’t set boundaries are go-ing  to have children with behavior prob-lems, who have problems when they grow up.  And  if  it’s  not  good  to  always  say “yes,”  it’s also not good  for  the child  to say “no” at first … and then cave in when they  throw a  temper  tantrum or beg and plead. Teach them that your “no” is firm, but only say “no” when you really feel that it’s a boundary you need to set.

Model good behavior.Bad  manners,  inconsiderate  behavior, sloppy habits, anger, a negative attitude, laziness and greed … all  these behav-iors will rub off on your child. Instead, model  the  behavior  you’d  like  your child to learn.

Treat their mother with respect, always. If  you  treat  your  child’s  mother  with disrespect, your child will not only learn that behavior, but grow up with insecu-rities and other emotional problems.

iPad tip of the week

DEAR DR. ROACH: I became extremely sick and was taken to the hospital. My physician thought I had regular pneumonia. I was so dehydrated that they couldn’t find a vein. I was intubated and had trouble getting enough oxygen. I had dialysis. My family was told I probably would not live. They discovered that my illness was Legionella, and with treatment, I woke up from paralysis. My recovery has been easy and fast, although I was told it would take a year at the least. I am finished with physical therapy. My blood work and scan show everything is back to normal. But I have scarring in my lungs. I am a 47-year-old woman. What should I expect for my future? Are my kidneys at risk? Do I have a greater risk of contracting pneumonia in the future? What about my lungs? Is there permanent damage? What about allergy medicines and ibuprofen? I am afraid to have a glass of wine! — C.K.

ANSWER: Legionella is a bacteria that can cause pneumonia. It is classically found in fresh water, such as air-conditioning cooling towers and condensers. It was thought to be the cause of the original outbreak among American Legionnaires back in 1976 in Philadelphia, hence the popular name of Legionnaires’ disease. Once considered rare, increased awareness and better diagnostic tests have led to a greater understanding of this important cause of pneumonia. It may look just like any other kind of pneumonia, but diarrhea and very high fever are clues that it might be Legionella. Liver problems are more common in Legionella infections, but the dialysis you received likely was due to kidney failure from severe shock and sepsis. Intubation -- having a breathing tube inserted into your windpipe -- and paralysis are reserved for only the very most severe pneumonias, and it is really great news that you are recovering so quickly and completely. Being young (47) and female are good signs for recovery. Since your blood tests are normal, your kidneys apparently recovered completely. There is no reason not to use the same OTC medications you used before the pneumonia, and an occasional glass of wine is fine (but not too much). Some scarring after pneumonia is common, and this indeed puts you at somewhat increased risk for future pneumonias. A vaccination for pneumonia will reduce the risk of the most common bacteria.

ASKAmySilence makes this husband suspiciousDEAR AMY: A while ago I found out that my wife was texting a co-worker. She does not delete anything off her phone, but she did delete these texts to this guy (who is younger and single), making it very suspicious. This caused a major rift in our relationship, and I am slowly getting over it. Now they have ceased all communication that they used to have. They are no longer Facebook friends, no more games on their phones, no cellphone calls — nothing! I feel like they’re being sneaky about this relationship, and that continues to eat at me. Any time I bring it up to my wife, she minimizes their relationship and tries to make it seem like less than it is. Am I overreacting for being suspicious about this? — Still Suspicious

DEAR SUSPICIOUS: You were suspicious when your wife and this guy were in touch, and now that they are not in touch, you are... suspicious. This reveals an insidious issue in your marriage. You and your wife are circling each other when you should be driving through the heart of this. The best way to do this is with a seasoned marriage counselor. You need clarity to tamp down your suspicions, and she needs to be honest and completely transparent about this other relationship.

DEAR AMY: My co-workers and I don’t know how to handle a particular problem involving my boss. He is truly The Boss from Hell. We never know if we are saying ‘good morning’ to Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde. It’s an emotional roller-coaster ride. He yells at his employees at the top of his voice at the slightest infraction, even when there are clients in the office. He then forgets all about it. We, however, never forget being embarrassed in front of each other or clients. Then he invites us to lunch for special occasions and dominates the conversation. It’s all about him. We don’t want to socialize with this nut. We feel like hypocrites when we do, but we don’t know how to say ‘no’ to this man. Many of us are looking for other jobs. — Working for a Narcissist

DEAR WORKING: If someone other than your boss owns this business, then this person should be told about your boss’s actions. Where I work there is a way to communicate serious concerns anonymously. It is also possible for a brave staff member to confront the boss: ‘I don’t like the way you yell at me; I don’t want to socialize with you when I feel so disrespected.’ Although if your boss is a true narcissist, this would have no effect and could make things worse. If you have no other outlets, I hope that the first among you who gets a new job gives this person an honest talking-to on the way out, followed by a written account sent to the business owner.

PRIMAVERAWITH PROSCIUTTO, ASPARAGUS

AND CARROTS

INGREDIENTS• Kosher salt• 1 lb. penne or farfalle• 1 lb. asparagus spears, stems trimmed,

cut into 1 1/2-inch lengths• 1 large carrot, cut into matchsticks• 1 cup snap peas• 1 T. extra-virgin olive oil• 8 oz. sliced prosciutto, diced• 1 large shallot, sliced 1/8 inch thick• 1 clove garlic, minced• 1/2 t. red pepper flakes• 1 cup heavy cream• 1 cup chicken stock• 3 T. dijon mustard

DIRECTIONS1. Bring a pot of water to a boil, salt it generously and cook the pasta for 8 minutes; add the aspara-gus, carrot and snap peas and cook for 3 minutes. Check the pasta and vegetables to make sure they’re cooked through but still have texture, then drain.

2. While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large saute pan, add the ham and shallot and cook until lightly browned, 3 minutes or so. Add the garlic and pepper flakes and cook until fragrant, 1 minute. Add the cream, stock and mustard and simmer for a minute or two, scraping up any brown bits.

3. Add the pasta and vegetables to the pan. Toss and cook for another 2 minutes, until cooked through and the pasta is coated. Taste for seasoning, add salt if necessary and serve immediately in warm bowls.

Guided Access enables you to set up the iPad so that you cannot leave apps. First, activate the feature in the Settings menu under General and then Accessibility. Now, whenever you're in an app, you can lock the phone into that one specific program by triple-clicking the Home button. Once you've locked the tablet into that app, you have to put in a passcode to back out. So, for example, if you want to make sure your teen is using their tablet for schoolwork rather than YouTube, you can temporarily keep the tablet from doing anything but school-relat-ed apps. Once the homework is done, a simple 4-digit code sets the tablet free once more.

While the Edgewood’s brick exterior is clearly colonial, its interior is fully contem-porary. Bookend chimneys bracket a totally symmetrical central section complete with a stately columned portico, keystone accented windows, and a hipped roof with eyebrow-arched dormers. The portico’s copper roof provides a modern touch, and the side extensions break with tradition by varying in size.
