Health Inequalities
NHS England & NHS Improvement — East of England, Swift House, Chelmsford, CM2 5PF
INTRODUCTION
This is a special edition of the Pharmacy LPN newsletter that takes a system wide
approach to addressing health inequalities which have become even more
apparent over the last few months. Evidence indicates that health inequalities
cause people to die prematurely and have poorer health outcomes.
Dental and Optometry LPN colleagues have produced simple messages that can
be given to patients to help them look after their teeth and eyes better. Please
ensure that your staff have access to this newsletter so a unified set of messages
can be provided to patients.
As we are connecting with the family, friends and
colleagues virtually, do consider your eyes – having
to spend a lot longer staring at screens!
Look after your eyes (https://lookafteryoureyes.org/) is
a great website to learn more about your eyes and
what you can do to look after them. One of the main things you can do is to: Have
Regular Eye Tests.

Eye tests are not just for getting new glasses, they can screen for and diagnose eye conditions as well as health conditions such as Diabetes. Learn more about the eyes by watching this video about 10 amazing facts: https://youtu.be/2p8RmU900_c
If you are experiencing any eye related problems, please contact your optical practice and they will be able to provide advice and guidance. If you need to go in and have an eye test, they will be able to provide some information on how this can be done safely.
Some people may be eligible for NHS funding towards the cost of the eye test and help towards glasses. Check if you are eligible for NHS funded eye care: https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/help-with-health-costs/free-nhs-eye-tests-and-optical-vouchers/

Looking after your teeth
• brush for 2 minutes twice a day
• use a fluoride toothpaste
• limit the frequency of sugars
• Visit the dentist
Use a fluoride toothpaste
The amount of fluoride in toothpaste is measured in parts per million (ppm) which is written on the packaging.
Children 3 and under no less than 1000 ppm
Children over 3-6 more than 1000ppm
Children over 7 and adults 1350ppm
Visiting the dentist
Attend regular check-ups every 6 months or as advised by your dentist. First dental visit before the age of one year
Some people are exempt from paying from dental treatment including all those under 18 years of age. For more information visit

A smear of tooth-paste for children aged 3-6 years
A pea sized blob of toothpaste for children aged 7+ years
Which toothbrush?
• Use a small headed brush with soft to medium bristles.
• Brush your teeth along the gum line in a circular motion, reaching all corners and tooth surfaces.
Spit out the toothpaste from your mouth – don’t rinse with water. This allows the fluoride in the toothpaste to help strengthen your teeth.
For children, brushing for 2 minutes can feel a long time but there are plenty of tools that can help pass the time like Brush DJ or two-minute tales
Breast Feeding
Breast feeding gives your baby the best start in life.
It can protect the baby against some infections and prevent tooth decay.
There are health benefits for the mother too.
Hidden Sugars
The food and drink we enjoy every day can have a surprising amount of sugar in it.
Try to reduce the number of times you have food or drinks with sugar in to 4 or less times a day.
cola (10.9g/100ml) nearly 3 tsp
squash cordials (24.6g/100ml) 6 tsp
sweetened fruit juice (9.8g/100ml) 2and a half tsp
Even savory food can contain a lot of sugar
tomato ketchup (27.5g/100g) nearly 7 tsp
stir-in sauce (20.2g/100g) 5 tsp
salad cream (16.7g/100g) 4 tsp
