“Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it” – Russell Baker
August 2014
By S. Michal BennettIt’s tempting to take the easy way out and utilize the convenience of processed, prepared foods when packing your child’s lunchbox, but artificial flavors, preservatives, additives, added sugars and other ingredients can compromise their immune system, making them more vulnerable to colds, the flu and other common school illnesses. When you make your lunches from scratch, you know exactly what is in your child’s food and assure that they are getting the nutrients, flavor and variety their bodies need to stay healthy and happy. You can also
make food fun, from cookie cutter shaped sandwiches to frozen yogurt molds.Get creative with packaging too! Reuse BPA-free plastic water bottles by freezing them with fresh juice or smoothie, and packing them with a lunch item that needs to stay cold. Your child will then have a cool drink to gulp with their meal. Here are more practical, fun, waste-free food storage solutions that can make lunches a breeze: Kids Konserve’s reusable lunch bags and stainless steel containers, Kleen Kanteen’s food canisters and bottles, and Life-factory’s glass and silicone storage containers.
By Sue McMahonThere are many treatments available for killing larval and adult lice, but so far nothing can kill the nits. Most of the over the counter chemical insecticides are dangerous to use, es-pecially on children, and are failing to work on the new super lice. The best lice treatment is wet removal. Saturate the hair with oils
like olive, neem, tea tree, eucalyptus and/or rosemary. Then comb the hair section by section with a nit comb. After each pass, wipe the comb with a paper towel sprayed with alco-hol. This will take some time, but once there are no more nits on the paper towels, you are LICE FREE! Any treatment used to kill the adult lice must be repeated once a week for three weeks as the nits hatch. Remember lice can live off the head
for 1 to 2 days, so spray all furni-ture with tea tree spray, and wash all potentially infested linens and clothes in hot water and dry on high for 40 minutes. To error on the side of caution, bag all stuffed animals in black trash bags and store for 3 days. For prevention, you can use Amy’s All Natural Hair and Clothing Lice Spray and use a few drops tea tree oil in your daily shampoo.
By Dr. Toby Hallowitz,ND, MSOM, LAc
10. Mushroom Extracts: very helpful for stimulating the immune system prior to starting school (2 weeks) – not only for students, but also for teachers.
9. Nutribiotic GSE Throat Spray: a combination of Grapefruit Seed Extract, licorice and menthol – when used at the first sign of throat irrita-tion, it can prevent both bacterial and viral pharyngitis. It also helps soothe and speed recovery of throat irrita-tion and infection.
8. Great Lakes Gelatin: This pas-ture-raised beef gelatinis a wonderful source of collagen necessary for developing joint tissue, hair, skin and nails. Make “Jello”-like desserts (red canister) or add to smoothies (green canister).Continued on Page 3.

The end of August marks the return to school, homework, packed lunches and “community” illnesses. Here is a quick guide to keeping your kids healthy, energetic and focused this school season.
In the May 1, 2009 issue of American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, researchers at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston report a link between insufficient levels of vitamin D and increased severity of asthma in children.
Asthma which is characterized by airway hyper-responsiveness to certain stimuli, results in coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. For unknown reasons, the prevalence of asthma is increasing, particularly in industrialized nations.
Juan Celedón, MD, DrPH, Augusto Litonjua, MD, MPH, and colleagues measured serum allergy markers and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in 616 children aged 6 to
14 living in the central valley of Costa Rica, an area that has a high incidence of asthma. Lung function tests and allergy skin testing were also conducted.
Twenty-eight percent of the children were found to have insufficient vitamin D levels of less than 30 nanograms per milliliter. Lower vitamin D levels were associated with increased allergy markers IgE and eosinophils. Those with higher vitamin D levels experienced a reduction in the risk of being hospitalized for any cause or using anti-inflammatory medications during the previous year. Higher vitamin D levels were also associated with decreased airway responsiveness.
“To our knowledge this is the first study to demonstrate an inverse association between circulating levels of vitamin D and markers of asthma severity and allergy,” the authors write. “Our finding of insufficient vitamin D levels in 28 percent of asthmatic children in the Central Valley of Costa Rica supports previous findings that deficiency occurs even in sun-replete areas of the world.”
“This study suggests that there may be added health benefits to vitamin D supplementation” Dr Celedón noted. “This study also provides epidemiological support for a growing body of in vitro evidence that vitamin D insufficiency may worsen asthma severity, and we suspect that giving vitamin D supplements to asthma patients who are deficient may help with their asthma control.”
“Whether vitamin D supplementation can prevent the development of asthma in very young children is a separate question, which will be answered by clinical trials that are getting under way,” he added.
In an accompanying editorial, Graham Devereux, MD, of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the University of Aberdeen concluded, “Ultimately, it is only by investigating the effects of vitamin D in doses at, and above, those currently recommended that decisions can be made on the optimal intake of vitamin D and the possible prevention and treatment of asthma.”

Continued from Page 1.
7. Vitamin K2 (MK-7): primarily obtained from pasture-raised dairy and meat, which are highly deficient in most conventional diets. Vitamin K2 is distinct from K1 and is essential for getting calcium into bones. Nature’s Plus Animal Parade Gold children’s multiple vitamin contains fairly high amounts of K2 and vitamin D3 (see below).
6. Melatonin: It is very important for children to get adequate sleep, especially when back in school. Children 1-3 years old require 12-14 hours per day; 3-6 years old, 10-12 hour per day; 7-12 years old, 10-11 hours; and 12-18 years old, at least 8-9 hours. It is often hard for children to adjust to a school routine following the long daylight hours and activity of summer break. Usually 1-3 mg of melatonin can be very helpful during the first few weeks to re-establish the circadian rhythm and bring on sleep. I like Natural Factor’s chewable sleep aid “Tranquil Sleep”*, which also supplies a small amount of 5-HTP and L-theanine.
5. L-theanine: This amino acid from green tea comes in a chewable form and can be beneficial for children with anxiety and/or concentration difficulties. It can stimulate alpha brain waves (a state of being relaxed with greater mental focus and alertness) as well as reduce beta waves (associated with nervousness, scattered thoughts and hyperactivity).
4. Elderberry Extract: important to have on hand at the first sign of a cold or flu. I prefer the liquid extracts for stimulating the immune response and preventing viral infection.
3. Probiotics: essential for the imunne system and G.I. health, including constipation, diarrhea and IBS. I recommend Stonyfield® YoKids yogurt as a probiotic supplement, because it contains pasture-raised dairy with top-notch and highly effective probiotics. Pilgrim’s Market also carries a number of good quality children’s probiotic supplements.
2. Fish Oil: high quality is especially important. If it tastes fishy, this implies that it is rancid and can cause inflammation in the body. Read the label and add up the amount of EPA and DHA, which should be about 1000 mg for most children. EPA and DHA are essential for controlling inflammation, eczema, concentration and emotional health.
1. Vitamin D3: levels drop dramatically in the fall and winter due to diminished sun exposure. Sufficient levels of vitamin D3 are critical for children’s bone development, immune system function, cold and flu prevention, balanced mental and emotional health, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and reducing the risks for developing ADHD. Many varied factors affect how much a child needs (size, skin color, sun exposure, etc.), so it is a good idea to test vitamin D3 levels and prevent toxicity. It is usually safe for children to take between 1000 – 2000 IUs without monitoring, and taking vitamin K2 together with D3 minimizes the likelihood of toxic effects. However, it is important to discuss proper levels with your health care provider.*Although Tranquil Sleep is a safe formula, due to lack of studies, Natural Factors does not recommend it for children.
You’ve done all the right things to lose weight and bal-ance your blood sugar. You’ve counted calories, exercised and switched to a low-glycemic diet – all with no long-term success. In the book Belly Fat Effect, Mike Mutzel provides the missing links that are stand-ing between you and weight control and blood sugar man-agement.New research has proven that the ‘calories in – calories out’ path to weight loss is obsolete. It just doesn’t work for good reason: eating fewer calories and exercising more doesn’t account for the waist bust-ing influence of inflammatory foods, gut bacteria and other metabolic influences.Belly Fat Effect translates the new science into useable in-formation that will give you a winning edge over your excess pounds and roller-coaster blood sugar levels. Learn now how to burn fat, not store it.
