Year 11 (Class of 2014/15) Presentation Evening We enjoyed a fantastic evening honouring our class of 2014/15 on Wednesday 25th November. We held our annual Year 11 Presentation in the King’s Hall and were joined by our guest speaker, Paralympian Elizabeth Wright. With experience of two Paralympic Games and a haul of three Paralympic Medals, including a silver medal in the 400m Freestyle at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, Elizabeth has a phenomenal record of success. In addition to her sporting achievements, she has two university degrees and is now a Goal Journey Coach, author and an inspirational speaker.
All attending students received their GCSE certificates alongside awards for attainment and progress in individual subjects. Special awards were given to: Freddie Vaughan: Outstanding Attendance Kate Bacon: Personal Best James Hudson and Elizabeth Rudge: Commitment to School and Community James Flanagan: Special Award for School and Community Khaver Khan: Personal Development Award Jemima Elgood: The Pinsharp Cup for Sporting Achievement Maya Booton, Lucy Haines, Zoe Judkowski and Laura King: Community Sports Award Katie Dinsdale: Community Service Award Kate Allan: Ilkley Parish Council Citizenship Award Martha Baldwin: Ilkley Playhouse Award
‘As a 13 year old I made the decision that I wanted to swim at the Paralympic Games ... the responses I had ranged from laughter to absolute disbelief - but guess what? I swam at two Paralympic Games and walked away with three medals! At the
age of 24 I decided I wanted to go to uni, despite that fact that my grades hadn't been crash hot at school - yes, I went to university and walked away with First Class
Honours in my Bachelor Degree and later a Masters in Philosophy! I believe that we all have the capacity to have the success we want, even if the odds seem against us.‘

Consider Yourself...an Artist! Every year, the Art department look forward to hearing which play the Drama team are thinking of producing and they were delighted to find out that this year it was Oliver. The ideas started rolling in but they finally narrowed it down to Fagin's Den and Mr Brownlow's posh area of London. Thank you to all the Year 10 Art students who gave up their time to help complete the set; the Art department were all impressed with their ability and dedication to get it finished in such a short space of time. There was also a little help from two Year 8 students who spent the afternoon on take over challenge day helping out.
Thank you and well done to: Antonia Fern (10MWC); Emily Guillard (10MWC); Esther Hilton (10MWC); Imogen Brodaty (10LV); Beth Dicken-Jones (10LV); Alix Tennant (10JPC); Hannah Walker (10JDA); Ava Robson (10CW); Cameron Shankland (10MEK); Rosie Brown (10JPC); Tony Yarinakis (10KL); Ayman Siraj-Gill (10JB); George Ransom (10JB); Max Turner (10JPC); Darcey Charlesworth (10MEK); Maddie Wormold (10JB); Kai Wenek (10CW); Ellena Quarmby (10MEK); Peter Phillips (10LV); Rosie Kealey (10MEK) and Kenix Lee (10CW).

The full results of the Sunday Times 23rd annual Parent Power survey, covering 2000 schools, was published on the 22nd November. The school rankings span state and independent sectors, primary and preparatory education in England and secondary schools across the whole of the UK. IGS was placed 192nd last year overall and has moved up to 166th this year out of all schools in the list. However, when entirely selective schools are removed from the equation, IGS ranks 30th nationally. We are thrilled to have improved our standing in the league table. As a comprehensive academy, our overriding aim at IGS is to ensure that our students achieve everything that they are capable of – their ‘Personal Best’ - from Year 7 through to Sixth Form and beyond. We are very proud of our excellent reputation in the local community, as well as the wider Leeds and Bradford areas and pride ourselves on the quality of education we provide to our students. Ilkley Grammar School consistently achieves excellent examination results at both GCSE and A Level, and we are delighted that this has been recognised in the Sunday Times Top 200.

Goodbye Libby Wells! Good luck and goodbye to Libby Wells (KS3 Student Support Manager) who is leaving IGS just after Christmas to start a new exciting career as a social worker. Libby has been a well known face in the Hub since joining us in 2007.
We didn’t see Libby’s application form for her social worker course, but we are positive she listed some of her obvious talents: patience of a saint; funny; ‘unstressable’ and unflappable; mum of the school; official Pudsey and 3 legged walk organiser and last but not at all least, as quoted by some students, ‘The glue that holds us together!’
We wish her all the best in her new career.
PTA News The minutes from last week’s AGM can be found on our website here.
The next PTA meeting is on 21st January and will be held in the function room at the Wheatley Pub with the usual 7pm start. Well played to our U15 netball team who played Beckfoot School last week. Unfortunately they lost 15-5, but the girls played very well and are really improving every game. Player of the match was Becky Hadfield (10JB) on her first game of the season - well done! A special mention goes to captain Sophie Armitage (10JB) who still came to watch the girls play despite having a broken finger!
Congratulations to our U14 and U15 hockey teams who have been in action this week. The girls played matches against Bradford Grammar on Tuesday night and both teams were victorious.

Well done to Archie Minto (8AMB), George Wilde (11JLF), Cameron Reilly (10JB) and Sam Naylor (11HGW) who all competed in the North East Regional swimming championships in Sunderland last weekend, representing the City of Bradford Swimming Club COBSC. There were swimmers from a number of clubs present, and the COBSC swimmers put in great performances. Archie Minto secured 5th and 6th places in 3 of the age 12 events, and Sam Naylor won a silver medal in the 15 years of age 400m freestyle, and was 4th in both the 200m and the 1500m event.

Futsal Focus Futsal is a variant of association football that is played on a smaller field and mainly played indoors. It can be considered a version of five-a-side football. Its name comes from the Portuguese Futebol de salão , which can be translated as ‘room football’ and was developed in Brazil in the 1930s and 1940s. In Brazil, futsal is played by more people than football but does not attract as many spectators as the outdoor sport. Several futsal players have moved on to careers as successful professional football players. Futsal is a game played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface and walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football due to the surface of the field. The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces. Our Year 10 and 11 footballers took part in the Bradford Futsal Competition on Tuesday night and thoroughly enjoyed the new experience. The Year 10 team finished league runners up, losing the first game 4-1 to Buttershaw but bouncing back to beat St Bedes 4-1 and Dixons Trinity Academy 4-1. The Year 11s won the league and booked a place in to the final. They drew 3-3 to Buttershaw in their first game, then beat Dixons Allerton Academy 8-1 and St Bedes 3-1. Unfortunately, they conceded a last minute goal and lost 2-1 in the final to Buttershaw.
Well done to Robbie Potts (11JI), Ben Singleton (11CT), Alfie Warren (11CT), James Doyle (11HGW), Ben Thompson (11LO), Charlie Nixon (11JI), Chris Davies (11JI), Miles Brear (11HGW), Cameron Shankland (10MEK), Christian Farrar (10JK), Ben Bearpark (10LV), James Silson (10MWC), Max Turner (10JPC), Tom Archer (10KL), Joe Haigh (10LV) and Ben Knight (10MEK).

Charity Donation On Monday the 16th of November we presented two local charities, Outside the Box Community Café and AWARE (Airedale and Wharfedale Autism Resource) with recently raised donations. Veronica Hepworth (Behaviour, Intervention and Outreach Specialist) presented each of the charities with the cheques for £100 which were raised from a raffle held at the staff summer party. There is a strong connection between Ilkley Grammar School and Outside the Box, some of our students have benefitted from work experience at the Café. Outside the Box Community Café, open Monday to Sunday 9am to 4.00pm, offers support to adults and young people with learning difficulties, helping them to lead more independent and fulfilled lives. You can find more information on Outside the Box here.
AWARE is a parent run group supporting families with children and young adults on the autistic spectrum (formal diagnosis not required). The group covers the Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven areas and beyond. Members include families and supporters in general, as well as health, education and social care professionals. Early diagnosis of autism can greatly improve the chances of a person receiving appropriate help. AWARE can support families through the maze of local services which cross health, social care and education boundaries and can help them access specialised education which can make a huge difference to a person with autism, helping them to maximise their skills and achieve full potential as an adult. The group provides activities such as weekly youth clubs, holiday play schemes and social groups for the children/young people and support for their families, more information can be found at [email protected].

Media Trip 2015 After a gap of a year, media students returned to York for the film festival organised by Aesthetica magazine, a glossy, high end photography publication. The group of students had managed to haggle free passes for screenings of the diverse short films and music videos chosen for exhibition, an always eclectic range submitted by film- and video-makers worldwide. Unfortunately, the wonders of our railway network ensured that, one cancelled train later, they missed out on these entirely! However, it was primarily the ‘masterclasses’ they were there for: though, hour-long lectures (usually with question and answer time at the end) with an extremely impressive line-up of leading industry practitioners across the fields of film, TV, music video, and more, including experts on animation, documentary, film criticism and marketing.
Our Year 13s went to masterclasses on music video, the links between advertising/marketing and film careers (presented by a senior executive from Ridley Scott Associates – a company and a career that spans TV ads for Hovis bread and the global hit franchise Alien/s!), and women in film. They got the opportunity to speak to Craig MacNeill afterwards, a music video director who has worked with some of the biggest names in pop and rock (such as Adele) and who has built up a phenomenal catalogue of videos for acts associated with Beggars Group, a British label which is now the world’s biggest ‘Indie’. Craig promised to review their A2 coursework music video when its done – based on early editing I’ve seen, I’m confident he’s going to be highly impressed!
Although it’s an issue that we look at for our AS exam work on British Cinema, tackling critical academic theories such as Laura Mulvey’s ‘male gaze’ concept, and again in more depth for the A2 exam (comparing feminist and post-feminist readings of music videos for example), none of the AS gentlemen opted for the women in film session by Professor Linda Williams, though some of their female counterparts joined the A2 students in this one.
We cover a lot of ground on the Media A-Level, and look at an exceptionally wide range of theories (applied to production/coursework as well as to exam preparation). Digitisation has emerged as a challenge to the way media industries operate, but also to many longstanding media theories, especially around the concept of audience. Warp Films’ Head of Production, Barry Ryan, gave a masterclass on convergence: the idea that the barriers between media industries are collapsing, whilst the way we access media content are also changing as technological convergence means we can use a phone as a computer, web browser, video camera and more. This is England neatly sums up the idea: originally a 2006 film, it has now had three sequel series on Channel 4, with rumours that director and writer Shane Meadows might revert to cinema for a final installment. Ryan compared the viewing figures for the This is England film through cinema and DVD sales with those for the TV series – boosted by the 4oD catch-up service, and the large numbers accessing ‘TV’ through smartphones, tablets and other gadgets, not just the traditional TV set itself. He also highlighted the role of social media not just in boosting audience figures but in essentially extending the text itself – a point we explore through various ‘web 2.0’ theorists such as Dan Gillmor, Henry Jenkins and more. At a coursework level, our students are ever more engaged with social media as a core element of their production work, utilising this to brand and promote their work, engage in audience research and to actively seek out audience feedback, as well as a core organisational tool for communicating with each other and their cast. We’ve seen students get offered well paid jobs while still at school on the back of their impressive blogging work, featuring all of this and more, utilising this valuable skillset. Our students were invigorated and inspired by what they heard, and the terms, concepts and industry case studies they explore in lessons brought to life by a heady mixture of leading academics and industry practitioners involved in the production of some of the work they closely study.
