Posh Frocks, Tuxedos and Camper Vans! Vintage buses, VW camper vans, limos and Hummers were just some of the vehicles delivering the students to the Craiglands. Lots of people took advantage of the fantastic weather to walk to the event and many parents made the most of the sunshine to watch their sons and daughters arrive at the ball. The students partied the night away enjoying a band and disco and were impeccably behaved and beautifully turned out, including some of the highest heels ever seen! The ball has taken place at the Craiglands for many years now and is a momentous evening for all concerned. Ian Swain, Key Stage Leader, said, ‘Our Year 11 logo for the year has been ‘2014 Amazing’ and that sums up the night: they were all amazing. The students were very sociable with staff and students alike. Everyone enjoyed the evening and the opportunity to say goodbye and also thank you to many of their teachers.’

GCSE Spanish Revision Sessions The Spanish GCSE speaking exam (worth 15% of the overall grade) is taking place in the week beginning June 30th. The Spanish Department wants to support students as they prepare and revise and therefore N7 will be available for quiet study throughout lunchtime from now on. Students can bring their lunch, and biscuits and squash are provided along with a member of staff to ensure a quiet atmosphere. In the past students have found this very useful as a way of boosting their grade. Please encourage your child to attend in order to achieve their target grade.

School Closure: Friday July 4th You should have all been notified via Schoolcomms of the planned early closure on the afternoon of 4th July (the Tour de France weekend). This is due to the likely traffic issues on that afternoon and to ensure all our students can get home. The early finish is in line with Skipton and Harrogate Schools. Students will be dismissed at 12.20 to

Super Tutor Group 2014 The cut off for collation and counting of points and certificates is Friday 11th July. Students have got their eyes on the prize and are trying to secure their tutor group as Super Tutor group for 2014. Tutor groups progress charts are displayed in Key Stage 3 and 4 Hubs.

Well done to Bethan Morley (7PDH) and Ella Shouler Harris (7SL) who represented Ilkley Harrier Junior girls and whose team won at Badger Stone Relay last week.

Well done to our Year 10 boys’ tennis team who were in action on Thursday at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe, Halifax. Left to right: Jai Cant (10ACF), Dan Pelkowski (10AJH), Max Tales (10FV) and Ollie Burton (8ALC). They all competed in the AEGON tennis league fixture and won three out of four single games and both double games. All four boys played really well and a special mention to Max and Dan for being very last minute replacements and helping the team to win their first match of the season.

Congratulations to our Year 7 cricket team who qualified for the final against The Grammar School of Leeds on Tuesday afternoon. They played fantastically well but it wasn’t to be their day. The match finished GSAL 121-7 IGS 63 .

Back row (L to R) Isaac Hutton (7LAM), Cameron Hawdon (7LG), Fin Tunney (7LG), Matthew Revis (7SP), Laurie Stephens (7SP), and Joe Wolf (7DSF). Front row (L to R) Charlei Day (7LG), Adam Haw (7PDH), Alex Bentley (7SL), Ryan Stockley (7SP), Charlie Harrison (7PDH), not in picture Freddie Smart.

Well done to our Year 7 C3 groups who visited both Bradford Cathedral and the Gurdwara Temple on Tuesday as part of their study into religion. The groups were fantastically behaved and enjoyed experiencing other faiths and their places of worship.

You’re Hired! Our Year 10 students have all been grilled under interview conditions this week...to give them a taste of what it’s like to be job hunting. As well as CV and letter writing they all managed to impress their interviewers with their answers to tough questions and explain why their qualities made them the one to hire. Well done to all our Year 10 students, they dressed to impress, they were professional and had their eye on the prize! Our mock interviews are extremely beneficial and great experience for everyone involved. The feedback from the interviewers was very positive. Special thanks go to all our interviewers and Mrs Daly and Mrs Mitchell for organising the three days.

You’re Hired!

Congratulations to Imogen Parton (8JRW) for being the first student in Year 8 to achieve their Platinum Award (160 credits this year).

This is an outstanding achievement: well done Imogen.

IGS have traditionally done very well over long distances and this was no exception; when the boys took to the track, Cameron Reilly (8ADM) set a new personal best time of 4:52 winning the 1500m race by a comfortable margin. The girls did well in all field events with strong performances in the high jump and long jump and took second place in the Inter Girls’ category. To round off an excellent day for the boys, the 4x100m Inter Boys’ relay team cruised across the finish line with a solid performance taking the maximum points to take the team into an overall lead. Despite not fielding a Junior Girls’ team, it was looking promising for an Ilkley victory with wins for the Junior and Inter Boys’ and a second place for the Girls’ team, but we were pipped to the finishing line by Bradford Grammar by 10 points.

Congratulations to 27 of our students who represented IGS in an athletics event at Horsfall Stadium, Bradford, against Rishworth and Bradford Grammar School. Due to our Year 7 and 10 girls’ team being involved in a rounders fixture it was up to the Junior Boys, Inter Boys and Inter Girls to win the points for IGS. The girls started strongly on the track, with four Year 8 girls racing up an age category, whilst the boys dominated the field events. Josh Boon (9BJS), who was making his debut for the athletics team threw the javelin over 30 metres, claiming all 6 points to win the event. Some strong performances from the Year 7 boys were raising eyebrows in the stands about the threat they could bring to the English Schools’ competition next year including Fin Tunney (7LG) javelin, Dom Coy (7SP) 800m, Charlie Wilde (7MPC) high jump and Josh Rowland (7PDH) long jump.

Security is our Concern! To improve security, the front doors are now closed during the day and can only be opened by using your swipe card or being buzzed in by Reception. This applies to staff, students and visitors. The following rules apply:

Students should only access the front entrance if they are entering

school after 8.30 (when the gates have been closed). Students should not be attempting to enter the school building via the front entrance before that time. If students have arrived into school after 8.30 they will need to press the buzzer to be let in.

If you are dropping something off for your son or daughter, please press the bell for Reception to let you into school, the item should then be let with Reception. Please remember we do try to encourage students to be organised themselves and items should only be brought in for them in an emergency.

The gates at the bottom of the car park are for vehicles only, this is not a pedestrian route. Whilst the number of students using this as an access point has dramatically reduced, a few are still trying to use this as an entrance route. Students will be challenged if they are seen using this route. Cameras are in operation in this area.

PTA UPDATEPTA UPDATEPTA UPDATE

Thank you to everyone who either staked out the field, manned a stall, spent money or cleared away at our penultimate Car Boot Sale last Sunday. For the second Car Boot running we were blessed with the very best weather. We filled 115 pitches, 100 small and 14 large (and a registered charity pitch) and raised:

Pitch charges total £1225 Burger van £75 Ice cream Van £60 Barclays £4£ £100 Total £1450

The bucket shakers were raising money for the upcoming Honduras visit and managed to collect £575. The final Car Boot Sale is 20th July and as always we need your help with setting up, marking out and helping to clear away. If you can give an hour or two of your time either on Saturday or Sunday – please email the PTA on [email protected]. The PTA are grateful to everyone who helps at and attends the events, they really do appreciate it and it would be lovely to see a few more faces at the meetings! You can get in touch with the PTA by emailing them [email protected] or follow them (as well as IGS!) on twitter

Putting the Art in Grand Depart! Do you remember Alice Vaughan’s (13EM) Claymation of Bradley Wiggins outside Leishmans Butchers as part of the Year 13 Art Exhibition? The butchers were so taken with her work that they have commissioned her to paint a mural on Lieshman’s back wall and car park floor in time for the grand de part. She is working all this week with the able help from Lilian Baldwin (13AJK) and next week to complete the floor.

Le Tour in Addingham Leeds Metropolitan University are partnering with Le Tour Addingham to run three big days of celebration to coincide with the amazing spectacle that is the Tour de France. Le Tour passes through Addingham twice, so there is no better place for the thousands of people booked into the local campsites to witness this grand event.

We are looking after the Big Screen that will showcase our Celebration of British Cycling conference, profile a back catalogue of cycling classics and show highlights from this year’s Live at Leeds. We are also tipping our hat to the other sporting highlights taking place this summer, of course, including Wimbledon, the Grand Prix and the World Cup. For the young (and the young at heart), our kids’ area is the place to be! Activities include games that will keep the youngest in the family entertained and a chance to showcase their DJ talents at our festival for the teenagers!

Leeds Met is also curating and running a stage celebrating the very best of Yorkshire’s up and coming musicians. With the sweet sounds of Leeds Met’s own Baxtalo and the soulful songs of BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award nominee Sunjay Brayne on Saturday 5th July, and the unbelievably talented self-proclaimed ‘happy-folk’ band The Coopers on the Sunday, this is an event not to be missed!

Day tickets are available at a cost of £5 for Saturday or Sunday. Weekend passes are available for £10, and includes entry to all events running Friday-Sunday. Wristbands for visitors under twelve are free. Tickets can be purchased from www.addinghamfestival.eventbrite.co.uk. We advise visitors to book in advance in order to avoid large queues on the day.

Show Camera Grid When taking photos with your iPad it’s useful to turn on the Grid to line things up. Nobody wants a skewed shot!

In Settings, choose Photos and Camera, under Camera turn the grid option on – note that it’s not available for the front-facing

Throw Away Notifications A small, but quick tip for getting rid of notification banners that pop down from the top of your screen – pull them down with your finger and throw them up to quickly get rid of them!

Find Definitions Ever wondered what a word meant and used the Dictionary.com app (others are available) to find out? Took you several taps and half a minute, didn’t it? Interested in a short cut? Just tap and hold to select the word and tap Define, the built-in Dictionary is at hand!

Ones to Watch... 9GAG is another way for users to spread sarcastic, degrading and potentially hurtful pictures or posts, 9GAG is a free app/social media site that focuses on uploaded images with captions and text. These images run from Disney cartoon characters spouting abbreviated profanities to random pictures of pets. Granted, there are many harmless posts on the site; however, just scrolling through the daily favourites posted on the site will expose your son or daughter to crude humour, sexually suggestive material and offensive behaviour.

Poof by Cydia. With one touch, Poof makes apps disappear before parents' prying eyes, allowing young users of "jailbroken" iPhones to virtually hide apps they don't want you to see. All your little tech genius needs to do is open Poof and select which app she wants hidden, and you'll never know it's there!
