Teach- ing and learning has shown that standards are being main- tained and improving. This monitoring entails lesson observa- tions, book scrunity, discussions with the children and pro- fessional dialogues with the teacher. I am pleased to report there is some outstanding practice at Shorne. This practice is being shared with other teachers within the Academy as exemplary teaching. All members of staff work incredibly hard to improve, learn and develop as professionals and this is evident form the standards observed by Mrs Tunnicliffe and myself. Attendance and Behaviour Attendance continues to be a key area of focus and we are striving for all classes to be 96% or above. This is an Ofsted requirement and as a school we are judged against this. Research shows that good school attendance impacts upon childrens success in learning. Good attendance helps chil- dren to achieve good results, helps them to fulfil their po- tential and gives them a chance of a better future. At Shorne we are committed to ensuring that each and every child in our school fulfils their potential. To help us achieve this we want all of our children to have the best possible at- tendance. We want to see all our pupils with above 96% attendance. Every day that your child is absent from school is an oppor- tunity missed. Schools and parents/carers have a shared re- sponsibility to ensure that children attend school regularly and on time. Punctuality is also just as important as attend- ance. Shorne Church of England Primary School starts at 8:50am every morning. It is important that children arrive in school on time as it supports them to learn good timekeeping and also reduces classroom disruption for the other children and themselves. Parental support is critical in ensuring that children achieve in education. What can parents/carers do to help? Ensure your child attends school every day and on time. If your child is not well enough to attend please contact the school by 9.30am on the first day of absence. Try to make dental and medical appointments outside of school time or at weekends. Take family holidays during the school holidays. We are una- ble to authorise term time holidays. Contact us immediately if you need help or support with your childs attendance or punctuality.

International Week

The first week back after Christmas we held International week. Every class studied another country looking at sim-ilarities and differences between the UK and the country they were studying. It was great fun learning about differ-

ent languages, cultures, food, celebrations and ways of life. At the end of the week we held a sharing assembly where every class shared what they had been learning and presented a poster. These are on display in the hall. We then invited parents in to see the what the children have been learning about.

Class 6 visit to St George’s Secondary School

On Wednesday 6th February Class 6 were invited to visit St George’s Secondary School to watch a pro-duction of “Little Shop of Horrors”. This was a thoroughly enjoyable outing for the Class 6 who have benefitted from the strong links that have been created within the Academy Trust. In addition to this our school Librarians have visited St George's library and observed how they implement Accelerated Reader. They are now working hard to integrate some new ideas into our school library. Finally, next term a group from Class 6 will be working alongside children at St George's in a writing group to enrich their creative writing.

Class 5 trip to the British Museum

On Wednesday 16th January Class 5 visited the British Museum in London as this term they have been learning about Ancient Egypt. Mack and Emma have written a short summary of their trip: ‘On arrival we saw fantastic statues, sarcophagus and mummies. We also learnt lots of in-teresting facts and saw the cano-pic jars which hold a person's organs after the mummification process. We also re-ceived a ruler with Egyptian hieroglyphics and a timeline on the back.‘
