STATEDEPUTY’SREPORT

As I was preparing and eventually sitting at my com-puter this month to provide the next newsletter article, two important items of focus came to my immediate attention. The first was the Knights of Columbus ongoing focus on the spiritual development of its members. The second was the season of Lent.

“In like a lion, out like a lamb;” so goes the proverb that describes the month of March, beginning with blustery winds and barrenness and ends with the promise of springtime and the gift of new life. To a certain extent, the Lenten season comes in and goes out of our lives in a similar manner each year. Lent can be defined in many ways. We compare OUR forty days in the desert to Christ’s forty days in the desert. We speak of fasting and abstinence. We speak of Lent as a time of self-sacrifice when many of us “give up something.” But what is so interesting is the definition of the word… “Lent.” Lent means “spring.” Those of us who are desperate to get outdoors and enjoy warmer weather may really enjoy hearing the word, “Lent.” Our altars are simple. The mass music is intentionally subdued. Blooming flowers are few and far between during the Lenten season. Some might say Lent is depressing and boring. And so, it can be hard to believe that Lent means spring. Lent is not so much intended to be a bleak, dry and dark time in which we match our spiritual mood with that of the winter darkness. Instead, it is intended to be a new beginning, a new spring in which we rejuvenate our faith. To our surprise, fasting, abstinence and self-sacrifice are not really the point of Lent; but the tools we utilize during Lent.

The KC’s have a golden opportunity to grow in their faith by extending oneself to our councils and parishes dur-ing Lent. I am more than certain pastors and parishioners alike would enjoy more volunteers in our parishes to lead Stations of the Cross, the rosary or attendance at our local parish/cluster’s Communal Reconciliation Service. Retreats are also popular during Lent. How many of us have made the effort to attend one?

A spiritual person knows it is his/her mission to tend to their soul on an on-going basis. This requires us to constantly ask whether we are right with our maker in heaven and to reconcile our differences with God, our neighbors and our family members. Please join a brother Knight by inviting them to a spiritual enriching opportunity in one’s parish. Be a leader by offering to facilitate the Lenten activities in your area. Get to know our God better by celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Let the golden opportunity of the Lenten season not pass us by failing to live life to the fullness. Live the dream by getting in touch with the God who provides our eternal destiny.

March Madness is upon us. For many perhaps when they hear March Mad-ness it means basketball and the Final Four. With the Knights it should mean much more, as March is an extremely busy month in many ways.

Our Parish Fish Fry’s are in full swing as Lent has begun. Our Church drives for recruiting are beginning and this year it should be a great month for recruiting as we have the Bishop’s Blast in full swing. Yes, the Bishops have sent letters to the parish priests asking to support and to help recruit new members into the Knights. On March 29th we also celebrate Founders Day honoring Father Michael J. McGivney who founded the Order in 1882. Also, this month we have info available for our upcoming state convention which is always an exciting time of the year. When we come together as a group of men with our wives or girlfriends and families sharing our ideas and success stories throughout the year meeting our friends and making new ones.

Already some councils have conducted their church drives and the results have been phenomenal. Our brothers at St. Francis in West Des Moines have YTD membership changes of plus 32 with 16 of those new members coming into the Order in February. Our brothers in Burlington I understand had their first drive and collected 60 prospect cards. Cedar Rapids has reported one church drive so far that brought in 25 prospect cards. Wow, now the task is to contact these new prospects and get them excited about joining the world’s largest Catholic men’s fraternal group in the world with over 1.8 million members strong “The Knights of Columbus”.

I am excited to recognize a few more councils having a great year in recruiting new members because they understand the need to bring in more members to the Order. Council 644 in Des Moines at St. John’s has recruited 18 new Knights for 163.6 % increase. Neola 1115 which is one of our new-est reinstated councils are at 100% in new membership. Others to commend Sioux City 8562 Briar Cliff College 133.3% increase; Humboldt St. Mary’s 8592 166.6%; Council Bluffs Father John F. O’Neill 10722 at 125%; 14267 Des Moines Our Lady of Americas 260%; 14481 St. Pat’s Iowa City 166.6 %; 14494 Manson- Pomeroy 100%; 14678 Davenport 100%; 14977 Des Moines Drake University 133.3%; 14987 Cedar Falls UNI 175%; Davenport 15254 166.6%; Elkhart 15347 St. Mary’s Holy Cross 100%; and 15430 Bettendorf 133.3 % and several others reaching for that 100% goal. Not yet recorded is Knoxville St. Anthony 7874 who just brought in seven new Knights setting them up for Double Star at 200%.

Two district deputies who have obtained their membership goal to date: Brother Zachary Jakaitis District 37 College Councils at 125% and Brother Timothy J. Dempsey District 42 in the Des Moines area at 109%.

What common goals do all of the above councils have? They have a priest that is on board and they have a council of men that realize why it is so important to recruit new young members. We have said it many times we lose 500 plus members a year in Iowa to deaths. When we do not keep our brothers active and let them know how important they are to us, our church and community. We lose another 300 plus members to non-retainable status (and this one, brothers we can control).

Remember the Four Mores: More new members bring More hands, to do More of God’s work in evangelizing, including raising funds to help More people in need.

Brothers, as you fulfill our greatest principal of Charity, when raising funds keep two important causes in mind. In addition to your other great causes, consider the “Catholic based radio across Iowa” and “Give Cures John Paul II Medical Research Institute.” Please reach out to these two great causes.

In closing I want to thank all of our service men and women serving our country here and abroad and our clergy. Also, I thank all of you for allowing me and Cheryl to serve this great state as your state deputy. Vivat Jesus!

PATRIOT’S CORNER

STATESECRETARY’SREPORT

Dan Werner

My hometown is Manchester, and the Manchester Council 1962 recently asked me to say a few words at the council’s annual awards banquet. At the end of my brief speech, the council presented me with a thank-you gift of a copy of a Form 100 for my father, Lawrence Werner, who had joined the Manchester Coun-cil just a few days before.

Dad’s admission into the order means we have three living generations of Werner men in the Knights of Columbus; my wife and I have one son who is a member in the Des Moines area, and the other is a member in Omaha. My family is happy to welcome my father into the Knights of Columbus, and I would like to thank Manchester GK Dennis Scherbring, FS Jim Kerper, and DD Phil Turnis for their recruitment efforts.

Carol and I also recently attended the an-nual fund-raising dinner at the Colfax Council 11597, and we enjoyed visiting with the Knights and their families there.

I recently attended a First Degree ceremony at my home council; it was great to see 20 new Knights initiated from two local councils.

So far, I have recruited seven new brother Knights this fraternal year. Membership re-cruitment can be a challenging task, but it is a rewarding one as well, and I encourage you to make the effort to recruit at least one new member this year and to offer him the experi-ence of a lifetime.

The state convention is coming up. I look forward to meeting many of you and your wives. If you have never attended a state convention, consider serving as a council delegate.

Finally, as always, if you feel you have the interest, talents and desire to serve as a state officer now or in the future, please contact me or any of the other state officers. I am happy to provide further details to anyone interested. Thank you for the calls and e-mails from those of you who have already visited with me.

Happy Easter from the Werner family to your family.

I am very pleased to announce the forma-tion of three new assemblies in the Des Moines area. The new assemblies are Pope John Paul I Assembly 3377, Des Moines; Father William Thomas Cummings Assembly 3378, Granger and James L. Chambers Assembly 3379, Al-toona. These assemblies will play important roles in the Church and communities in their area. Let us congratulate the new assemblies and wish them the best of luck for success.

We had a Fourth Degree Exemplification at Queen of Apostles in Council Bluffs on February 9. There were 16 new Sir Knights who joined the highest and patriotic degree of our Order. Currently we have exemplifications planned on Saturday, April 6th in Storm Lake and Friday, April 26th at the state convention in Coralville. Please see the flyers in the Iowa K of C website for further details.

Supreme has strict rules regarding commu-nications with them on Fourth Degree matters. All communication must come through the District Master before going to Supreme.

I would like to thank the assemblies who have completed the Form 1728 Fraternal Sur-vey for Supreme. If you have not yet, please complete this form and send it to Supreme. This form was due on January 31. If you have not sent the Assembly Delegate Credentials for the State Convention, your donations to the Bishops Catholic Communication Fund and Masters Fund please do so by March 15. All of these will need to be sent to me. I also would like to thank Assembly 278 Gallitzin for your contribution to the Military Scholarship Program. Please continue your support of this very important program.

Since the turn of the century, members of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus, “the patriotic degree,’’ have combined their Catholic heritage with their love of country to sponsor and participate in a variety of interest-ing patriotic programs and activities. TO BE A PATRIOT has been established to recognize these programs. Developed in 1985, the “To Be a Patriot” Award annually recognizes the top three single best patriotic programs conducted by Fourth Degree assemblies each fraternal year. Entries are submitted to me by April 30th and I will determine the best program in Iowa. This entry is then sent to the Vice Supreme Master, who will select the best program in the Father Padilla Province. There are several worthy programs the assemblies have spon-sored in Iowa. Please take the time to complete this form and submit it to me. I would like to

recognize the assemblies who demonstrated their patriotism. Details of this award can be found on the Iowa K of C website.

I thank you for what you do as a Fourth Degree Knight. Please pray for the safety of our military personnel and their families.

Ed Pancrazio

MEMBERSHIPDIRECTOR’SREPORT

It is my pleasure to report the election of IPSD Mike Laake to Special Olympics Iowa Board of Directors. Mr. Laake is the repre-sentative for Iowa Knights of Columbus and brings valuable experience to the Board. Con-gratulations Mike and thank you representing the Iowa Knights.

Brothers, One Member per Council per Month - are you asking men to Join us every Month? This March we especially encourage you to go the extra mile and utilize the support from our bishops in asking men to become Knights. Now is the time to execute a coordi-nated membership drive targeting certain men for personal invitations and informing all of your parish about who we are as Knights. Using a combined Father Wants You invitation campaign and a Bishop’s Blast Church Drive weekend is a proven winner in recruiting new members.

Visit http://www.iowakofc.org/page/growth-development to learn more. Click on Bishop’s Blast to read the letters of support from our Bishops. Click on Recruitment to learn more about the components of a suc-cessful Church Drive and Father Wants You invitation campaign. I challenge all councils to bring in new members this our Founder’s month. I encourage you to do so in honor of Pope Benedict XVI.

But don’t stop there. Encourage your new-est members to enroll in the Shining Armor program. Assist them to achieve the require-ments of this award. Challenge them each to invite a buddy to join them in the Knights of Columbus. As they are busy family men in-troduce them to the 24 hour Knight - 24 hours over the next year that will change their life and with brother Knights in unity of purpose and action change the world one life at a time. Let them know the Knights are there for them and their families - it’s not only about giving their time to Knight’s activities but what they can get in return from the Knights.

Visit http://www.iowakofc.org/page/growth-development for more recruitment and retention ideas. As we move forward together to “give the world new hope” remember always the hope and joy we have in our wonderful fraternity of the Knights of Columbus.

Prayer for the Church in this Time of TransitionDear Brother Knight,

Earlier this month, the world learned of Pope Benedict’s decision to retire from the Papacy, effective today.

As he steps down from his role as the leader of our Church, and in the days of transition that follow, our thoughts and prayers are with Pope Benedict XVI, who has worked so hard in leading the Church, and has always been such a good friend to the Knights of Columbus. We wish him all the best in his retirement. In addition, we pray for all those cardinals who will take part in the conclave, and for the pope’s successor, that God may inspire them as they carry out the mission with which they are entrusted.

Our Supreme Chaplain, Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore has written a Prayer for the Church in this time of transition. I ask you to please commit to pray this prayer daily until the Church has a new pope, and to encourage your brother Knights and fellow parishioners to do the same.

We have developed a website for this campaign: PrayerfortheChurch.com. In addition to sharing the prayer itself, please share this site with your council and your parish. The site will allow individuals to add their names to the list of those praying for the Church daily, and will assist them in sharing the prayer and their commitment with family and friends.

I ask that you also encourage those brother Knights and their families that are on Twitter to show their prayerful support by using the hashtag #prayerforthechurch. If you’re on Facebook, you can also pledge to pray and encourage your friends to do the same with our Prayer for the Church facebook app. Visit facebook.com/knightsofcolumbus for more information.

The names of all those who pledge to pray this prayer will be brought to the Installation Mass for the new pope.

Knights have long been supporters of the Church and the pope, and during this time of transition our prayers are especially needed. This prayer and corresponding campaign provide Knights and all Catholics an opportunity to show their solidarity with the Church through prayer.

Thank you for your assistance and for your prayers for Pope Benedict XVI, for the Church, and for our future pope in this time of reflection and preparation.

Fraternally,

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson

Special Olympics Iowa selected Musca-tine’s own Corey Leonhard to serve a two-year term on its Board of Directors as an athlete representative. Leonhard has been competing with Special Olympics since 1994 on the state, nation and world levels.

Brother Knights, Grand Knights, District Deputies and Regional Directors,

It is coming to the time of the year when many councils and districts are very near achieving their quotas for Star Council and Star District. With the Bishop’s Recruitment Blitz still underway, this is a great opportu-nity to recruit those needed members. With Easter soon, this is also a great time to have that fellow Catholic gentlemen expand his faith, serve the parish, community, country and strengthen his family life by joining the Knights of Columbus.

Don’t forget this also gives him the op-portunity to secure his and his families future by investing in our orders top rated insurance and investment products through the Knights of Columbus Insurance Program.

As you look at the 2nd and 3rd Degree schedule listed, there are many dates still available for scheduling in April, May and June before the end of the Fraternal Year. Please contact your district deputy for securing a date in your area.

Brothers, it is a great time to be Catholic! If you look around, everything around us is a constant reminder of God’s love and how special we are for Him. We are in the midst of Lent, a season to make a stop and analyze ourselves as men, husbands, fathers, citizens, and Christians as a whole. It is a season of sobriety in preparation to the glory of the Resurrection. We are also five months into the Year of Faith, rediscovering Jesus’ presence in our lives. Finally, the Conclave to elect a new Pope is underway. The Holy Spirit works by inspiring the cardinals of who will take St. Peter’s place in leading the Universal Catholic Church. Many publications talk about which cardinals are likely to be elected. Some of the mentioned most often are two brother Knights Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York and Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Arch-bishop of Manila. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit inspires those who will elect our new Holy Father.

And talking about inspiration, we get ready for the Iowa State Convention the last weekend of April. Knights from all over the state will gather to share their works of charity, their ex-periences in unity, the fruits of their fraternity, and their devotion in patriotism. We will also be inspired by those who will be honored in the different Service Award Categories: Church, Community, Council, Culture of Live, Family and Youth. An inspiring group of people will also be honored as the 2012 Grand Knight, Knight, Youth, Family, Religious, Chaplain of the Year. All these awards should be an inspira-tion to all councils and all brother Knights on their efforts to improve the lives of those around us. The letter to the Hebrews tells us “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Heb. 10, 24-25). Our convention is how we spur one another, how we meet together, and how we encourage one another.

If your council submitted a nomination this year I thank you and wish you the best of luck. If you didn’t, I encourage you to be inspired by those who will be receiving the awards so you can start planning your submission for next year’s convention in Des Moines. I will be publishing all the submissions on the web page after the convention so that you can get ideas on activities for your councils next fraternal year.

Talk to me during the convention about the programs your council is working on. Tell me how the 2012-2013 Featured Programs helped you in planning this Fraternal Year and let me know how you are doing for your Columbian Award application. I know that this convention will send Knights home excited to “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.” (2 Tim 4:2).

Qué Viva Cristo Rey! Vivat Jesus!

Most youth activities are in their state final phase. March 3rd marks the Spelling Bee final in Ames, IA. Thanks to Brother Knight Tim Simodynes from Council 2230 in Ames (St. Cecilia) for leading this wonderful effort in put-ting the Spelling Bee contest together. Thanks to all those who went through the hard work to organize and hold the Regional competitions as well as to every council that participated in this great State Program.

March 10th is the final of the Free Throw Championship which will take place in Clarion, IA. Thanks go to Brother Knight Tom Sim-mons for leading the state and a regional competition. To all those who organized and held the regional, district and local competi-tions, many thanks. We had ALL seven state regions covered for both events. This is very exciting and promising for the future of youth programs in Iowa.

If your council still needs one more youth activity for your Columbian Award, you may still squeeze in the Essay Contest. Order your materials from the Supreme web site and submit them by the end of March and to State Program Director Antonio Bañuelos by March 15th. The theme of the essay contest is “The Importance of Religious Freedom.” The contest opens the doors of young minds, enabling the entrants to be creative, thoughtful and introspective in their work.

The Silver Rose dates back to 1960 when a Squires Circle wanted to give something back to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The “Run-ning of the Rose” starts in Ontario, Canada and continues its journey down to Laredo, Mexico where it crosses the border and it is “run” all the way to the Basilica of Guadalupe by December 12.

Last year, Silver Rose in Iowa crossed through the state in three weeks and it was present at the state convention and at the state officers installation. The Silver Rose was at 15 prayer services with over 930 attendees traveling over 750 miles across our state.

This year we will have the Silver Rose for three full weeks, arriving on the East border on June 30 and leaving for Nebraska on July 21. Councils in District 38 have committed to pick up the Silver Rose as it crosses the Mississippi River into Iowa. Council Bluffs councils will deliver it to Nebraska across the Missouri River.

WE ARE INVITING ALL COUNCILS, ASSEMBLIES, AND SPECIALLY SQUIRES CIRCLES TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS YEAR’S RUNNING OF THE SILVER ROSE THROUGH IOWA.

Please contact Antonio Bañuelos, Iowa Silver Rose 2012 Chairman to participate. Call me at (515) 991-2791 or [email protected]

Running of theSilver Rose 2013 in Iowa

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe continues traveling across Iowa and is scheduled to visit ALL COUNCILS IN THE STATE. The Rosary Service takes about 40 minutes and can be directed by a priest, a deacon, a nun, a Knight, a Squire, the Family of the Month, etc. Be creative. We Catholics can show our love to our God and His Mother in many ways.

If your Council has not received the icon, please let Antonio Banuelos, Marian Prayer Program Chair know: [email protected] or 515-991-2791 so we can schedule more visits.

The Council Bluffs Exemplification on Feb. 9, 2013 was held in honor of Fr. Dan KirbyDistrict Master Pat O’Keefe presents Father

Dan Kirby with his plaque and certificate dur-ing the exemplification held at the Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Council Bluffs.

The class welcomed 16 new members into the Fourth Degree for several assemblies in the western part of Iowa.

The Drumm Assembly 270 of Council Bluffs was the host assembly and provided the location for the class and the banquet that followed the Saturday evening Mass.

Father Kirby had been the pastor at the Queen of Apostles Catholic Church from 2002 until 2012 when he moved to St. Joseph Parish in Winterset as their pastor while also continuing to serve as Director of Seminarians for the Des Moines Diocese.

The St. Francis of Assisi Council 12422 presented a Live Nativity at the Des Moines Pastoral Center as part of the “No Room at the Inn” event sponsored by Catholic Chari-ties. This annual event raises funds for a local homeless shelter.

As I look over the history of the Iowa KC Perpetual Memorial Society that Russ Hensing was instrumental in getting started in 1990 I find that we have come a long way. We now have two hard bond books with our enrollees each spanning 10 years (1990-2000 & 2000-2010) plus a notebook with our 2010 & up enrollees.

At the present time we have deposited $205,000 into the Christopher Fund at the Supreme Office. The interest earned from this fund is presented to our four bishops annually to support vocations. To date we have presented a total of $175,415.93 (or $43,853.98 each) from the fund.

Since we are now covering our expenses from the donations to the Perpetual Memorial Society, I would highly recommend that you ask for your donor’s letter to be returned by e-mail. Currently it costs a little over $0.50 to send a letter in the mail. Any savings that we can make will provide more funds for vocations.

I would urge all councils and assemblies to enroll their deceased members. I have received many thank you cards stating their appreciation for the enrollment of their de-ceased members.
