We also have Stations of the Cross with Benediction in the church on Fridays at 6:00 p.m. in English and at 7:00 p.m. in Spanish. REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD As witnesses come forward to testify in a court of law they are asked, “Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?” They must respond, “I do” before the court will hear what they have to say. Everyone expects, however, that their testimony will be colored by whether they are hostile or friendly toward the defendant. In today’s Gospel account the woman at the well must have expected Jesus to be hostile toward her. As a Samaritan woman and a sinner, she was considered unclean by the Jews. No wonder she seems afraid and defensive in her answers to Jesus. Yet Jesus tells her the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. She tells Jesus the truth, too, but it is only a partial truth, the truth that she is willing to admit to herself and to this stranger. When he responds by speaking the whole truth about her past, why doesn’t she harden her heart and protest his rudeness, or simply take her bucket and go? It must be the love beneath his testimony that allows her to hear and accept the truth about who she is and who Jesus is. Then, perhaps for the first time in her life, she is free to testify the whole truth to everyone she meets. Only love can break through the defenses that we erect to hide the truth from ourselves and others. Only love can reveal the truth about a God who responds to our thirsts and ignores our fear and faithlessness. Only love can account for the fact that “while we were still sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).—Virginia StillwellCopyright © 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved

R.C.I.A.THE BROWN ROBES AND THE SCRUTINIES

On Sunday, March 9th, our Catechumens went to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election with Archbishop Gomez. They will now be called the "Elect" instead of "Catechumens". Our Elect are preparing for Baptism. They will wear the brown robes during the weeks of Lent. The brown robes are a visual to set the unbaptized apart from the baptized community. The brown robe symbolizes original sin which we are all born into as we enter the world. The brown robe of sin will be exchanged for the white robe of sanctifying grace in Baptism at the Easter Vigil Mass. On the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent, the Elect will celebrate the Scrutinies. Each Scrutiny is a Rite of Exorcism. The Scrutinies are for self-searching and repentance. Their purpose is to heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the Elect. They also bring out and strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. The Scrutinies deliver the Elect from the power of sin and protect them against temptation, giving them strength in Christ who is the way, the truth, and the life. Please keep our Elect: Ileanna Aguilar, Jose Chavez, Brittany Dean, David Partis, Vanessa Soria and Judy Wang, as well as all of our R.C.I.A. Candidates, in your prayers as they journey toward Easter and the celebration of all their Sacraments during the Easter season.

FILL US Open wide the windows of our spirits and fill us full of light; open wide the door of our hearts, that we may receive and entertain Thee with all our powers of adoration.—Christina Rossetti

LENTEN PRAYER FOR THE DROUGHT

During the Season of Lent the Cathol ic Bishops of California invite all to exercise restraint in the use of water as an expression of solidarity with those whose livelihood and welfare are at risk due to extreme drought conditions. Lent is a holy, penitential s e a s o n i n t h e C h u r c h ’s liturgical year, reflecting the forty days Jesus spent in the desert in fasting and prayer. In this time we unite ourselves with the Lord in the struggle to overcome the power of sin. We do so with prayer, fasting, abstinence, as well as other penitential sacrifices, and charitable works. This year, Californians are in an actual desert as an historic drought looms over us. We are starkly reminded in the time of drought of our dependence on the Creator. As the economic and health impact of the drought grows, those with limited resources will be the first to suffer. Wise conservation practices will mitigate those effects. They also serve as concrete acts of solidarity giving life and hope to other fellow Californians. During this Lent, we pray that God opens the heavens and lets His mercy rain down upon our fields and mountains.

DID YOU KNOW?HOW OLD DOES A CHILD NEED TO BE

IN ORDER TO STAY ALONE? Do not assume that when your child understands what you are saying, he is ready to walk out the door by himself. Besides the fact that many states have laws against leaving children of certain ages alone (for example, younger than 12), experts say children should not be left by themselves until they are capable of fighting off an abductor or handling a crisis situation. Experts also say children do not have the mental maturity to cross busy streets by themselves until they are about 10 or 12 years old. Finally, parents who are certain their young children would never walk away with a stranger will be shocked to learn that studies show they probably will. Stay alert and vigilant, even if you believe your child is aware of possible dangers from others. For particular help, call 213-637-7650.

BUSY THIS LENT? BUT YOU STILL WANT TO MAKE TIME FOR GOD THIS LENT?

If so, join us for the completely online program, “Making Time…A Busy Person’s Retreat” sponsored by the San Fernando Pastoral Region Office of Evangelization. Join us online this Lent for our ‘Busy Person’s Retreat’ which will include reflecting on scripture and the writings of Fr. Ronald Rolheiser. There are short weekly reflections for you to take in at your own pace, plan about 30 to 60 minutes per week. To join the retreat please email [email protected].

Jesús vino a cambiar nuestra perspectiva. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
