Great value for moneyOur university-level fees allow us to offer a cost-effective Higher Education experience that combines high levels of tutor contact and support with excellent specialist facilities.

How much will it cost?Full-time learnersOur tuition fees for UK and EU learners studying full-time university level courses in 2013/14 were £6,000 per year. This is substantially cheaper than most universities which are charging between £7,500 and £9,000 per year.

Tuition fees for courses run with our partnership universities were also £6,000 for the same academic year.

These fees should be used as guidance for the 2014/15 year.

Part-time learnersOur tuition fees for UK and EU learners studying part-time university level courses in 2012/13 ranged from £1,400 to £2,800 per year, dependent on the number of module credits delivered each year. This is also substantially lower than most universities. If you do not already possess an HE level qualification you could be eligible for a tuition fee loan resulting in no up front fees.

Tuition fees for courses run with our partnership universities also range from £1,400 to £2,800 for the same academic year.

These fees should be used as guidance for the 2014/15 year.

What financial support is available?Even if your place hasn’t been confirmed, you need to apply for your Higher Education funding as soon as possible. You can apply for your tuition fees loan, grants and bursaries all on one form at www.gov.uk/studentfinance

If you are eligible you can apply for a “Tuition Fee Loan”, resulting in your fees being paid directly to the College on your behalf. To qualify you must be studying at least 25% of a full-time course.

How do I repay this? This loan is only repaid once you have completed your course and are earning more than £21,000. At this point repayments will be taken directly out of your monthly salary.

Additional supportWelfare advisers at the College can advise you about any additional support which may be available. It is recommended that all prospective learners talk to a welfare adviser before enrolling.

ShoppingLeicester is one of the top ten shopping destinations in the UK. Our Highcross shopping centre has 120 high profile shops such as John Lewis, Next, Hugo Boss and Apple, while Debenhams and House of Fraser complete the trio of department stores.

However, there’s more to the retail quarter than Highcross, with a pedestrianised centre packed with high street stores, plenty of independent shops in The Lanes and of course, Leicester’s famed covered market which is the largest in Europe.

Meanwhile, the Golden Mile is a stretch of Belgrave Road renowned for its authentic Indian restaurants, sari shops and jewellery.

Well-locatedSet in the heart of some of the finest countryside in the Midlands, rural life is never more than a ten minute drive away.

Located in the heart of the UK, Leicester has fantastic links to all parts of the country. London St Pancras International is just over an hour away by train – and a quick change at St Pancras onto the Eurostar means you could be in the centre of Paris in just over four hours.East Midlands Airport is 30 minutes away by car, and the M1 and M69 motorways means road travel to and from the city is quick and easy.

CultureMassive investment has seen Leicester become a real cultural player. The city now has a vibrant cultural scene with a growing number of exhibition spaces ranging from modern and old masters at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery to independent artist-led space at Two Queens in the Cultural Quarter.

Leicester also holds the biggest Diwali celebrations outside India and has more than 240 places of worship. The iconic Curve theatre is a truly world-class venue for the performing arts, while Phoenix Square, a stunning state-of-the-art film and digital media centre, opened recently. In addition there is the new 12 screen Cinema de Lux multiplex in the Highcross.

The city’s music and club scene is also thriving. Venues on the national gigging circuit include The Shed, Musician, De Montfort Hall and the brand new O2 venue at Leicester University.

SocialisingThere are many restaurants in Leicester and Leicestershire catering for every taste. You’ll find quiet country pubs serving food made from local produce to city restaurants offering fine food and comprehensive wine menus. If a drink with friends is more your thing then you won’t be disappointed by the choice of bars and pubs across the city from champagne and cocktail bars to traditional pubs.

guide to qualificationSThe term “Higher Education” is used to describe courses of study that fall within the Government’s “Framework for Higher Education Qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland” (FHEQ).

The majority of Higher Education courses at the College fall under the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ) intermediate category which we refer to as University Level Qualifications.

Higher National Certificates (HNC)

Foundation Studies (FS)

Diploma

Higher National Diplomas (HND)

Foundation Degrees (FD)

Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE)

Level 4These qualifications are work-related (vocational) higher education qualifications. While bachelors degrees tend to focus on gaining knowledge, HNCs are designed to give you the skills to put that knowledge to effective use in a particular job.

Level 5These qualifications are designed to equip you for a particular area of work – as well as giving you the general skills that are useful in any type of job. They’re university-level qualifications, but are designed with work in mind, with the help of employers from that sector.

Level 6These qualifications are designed to give you a thorough understanding of a subject. They help you develop your analytical, intellectual and essay or dissertation writing skills. You’ll also have much more of a say about the direction your learning takes than you’ve had previously.

Level 7These qualifications are of academic study. They can be research based, a taught course, or a mixture of both, and will take at least 12 months of full-time study to complete. You may also have to submit a dissertation at the end of your course.

Level 8This level gives you the opportunity to undertake an original piece of research. It will usually take at least three years of full-time study to complete. Many doctorate courses lead to a qualification such as a Doctor of Philosophy – a PhD or Dphil.

Learner Risk AssessmentsLeicester College has a legal obligation known as Duty of Care, to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all its learners and staff. Learner Risk Assessments are an important part of this process. It is part of the College’s Learner Application and Risk Assessment procedures that learners are required to declare if they have an unspent criminal record, including any pending court cases, or if they are bailed or charged with any criminal offence either at application stage or during their course. Learners will be written to for formal disclosure and may need to attend a Risk Assessment Interview.

Certain professions are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Any learner whose course includes a work placement and falls within regulated activity will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check. The learners must declare any “spent” or “unspent” conviction/s, which include any

warnings, reprimands, cautions and Referral Orders. This is because the requirements for working with young or vulnerable people are very strict – in some cases, some convictions bar individuals from working with young or vulnerable people. If the enhanced DBS Disclosure or Risk Assessment Interview reveals convictions or information that make a person unsuitable for the course, alternative course options will be discussed. If you are unsure how your previous or current conviction may affect a course, or whether a conviction is spent, and if you need to disclose the information, please contact the Risk Assessment Team on 0116 224 2225 or 0116 224 2138.

During the Risk Assessment, support-needs are also identified which means that we can, if appropriate, refer you for Learning Mentor support, to a Counsellor or for support for mental health.
