HCS D1 - Technical Description

HCS D1 is a Humidity Regulator / Control Unit, for drying apparatus used for grain.This Humidity regulator will select feed out speed from your grain-dryer dependingon input from humidity sensors and your own settings on the panel.

The more you need to dry your grain, the longer time will elapse between outputs. Acontinues reading from the Humidity Sensors is displayed on the analogue instrumenton the panel of the HCS. It is possible to have this printed on a continuous linerecording instrument. Settings are made by a number of switches and the LCD display.

This Control Unit has two modes: Manual and Auto.

When in Manual mode the Humidity Sensors are not engaged, but the out-put speedis set by activating the switch at + / - ( 1 – 100 %) on the panel. When in Auto mode,the signal from the Humidity Sensors are used as well as your settings in manualmode to determine out-put speed. In case the water content in the grain changes,the out-put speed will change as well.

HCS has an alarm out-put, this will be activated in case of the system not being ableto lower the water content in the grain to the desired level. This could be caused bya fault in the dryer.

On customers request the HCS can be equipped for, so called, volumetric out-put,meaning the signal for out-put will be split up in up to 9 pulses.

When starting up, or changing grain, always start in Manual Mode,

Switch on the unit ( switch 3) and push down the Auto / Man –switch ( switch 4) toManual . The display (2) will now show; “MAN” and a percentage. If you want tochange the percentage, do so with the + / - Switch (5).

The percentage shows how long time the feed out drive is activated, in per cent oftotal time. High percentage – more feed out time – more water content, lowerpercentage – shorter feed out time – drier grain.When the dryer is running, check the water content on the processed grain. If not asdesired, adjust the percentage with the + / - switch (5 ). Grain drying is a slowprocess, when changing the settings please allow 1 to 2 hours before doing furtheradjustment.

3. The Instrumentation amplifier, HCS 200

When the water content of the dried grain is right, switch to Auto Mode. The simplestway is to push down the Auto-start switch (6), the Control Unit will then automaticallyfinds the settings to match the previous manual drying. If your check shows thewrong water content, please adjust using the + / - switch ( 5 ). A higher Auto-valuewill result in a higher water content, a lower in the opposite.

When the water content is right, make a note of the set Auto-value. This is useful thenext time you are going to dry the same sort of grain.

When using Auto-mode an alteration by 1.00 will result in a change of about 6%water content on the dried grain. This gives you an idea about how small changes insettings can give a big difference in processed grain. Make only small changes, wait1-2 hours and check the water content again.

When the light at “Torrt” ( Dry - 9) is on, the feed out drive is working full throttle andyou will not be able to produce a higher water content by increasing the Auto-setting.

If the Alarm light ( 8) is lit, the water content is higher than desired in 7 out feeds ina row. The light is reset when the water content goes down to desired level, or youincrease the setting on the + / - switch( 5 ).When the Alarm light is lit the Alarm rely is activated (closed).When the red light is lit, the feed-out is stopped.

Mounted close to the dryer, indoor or outdoor, between the Humidity Sensors andthe HCS. This Amplifier is encased in a rigid and dust proof box. Connects to theHumidity Sensors with two wires. Mount the amplifier only where it is accessible forservice. There is approximately 1 meter of cable from the Amplifier, to be connectedat a junction box. The cable from the junction box to the HCS must be shielded, atleast 3 * 0,5 mm2, the length is practically unlimited.

The Humidity Sensor consists of a holder with sensors and two 4 meter long cables,to be mounted inside the dryer accordingly to instructions. The mounting in the dryeris best done using no tools. The design of the Humidity Sensor prevents straw fromsticking to it, and thus leading to wrong readings. Depending on the width of thedryer 1 or 2 pcs Humidity Sensors are used.

5. Mounting of the Humidity SensorIn the picture below, right, you can see the first row of beams / members at the mark“X”, where the drying zone meet up with the cooling zone. In height the HumiditySensor should be mounted in the row of beams / members at mark “A” at the intakeside. When possible, mount the Sensor in one of the air beams / air members, insuch a way that it is situated one third of the dryers full width from one side. If this isnot possible, you can mount the sensor closer to the centre, but not close to oneside. Example: When Dryer full width = 1,5 meter, the Sensor should not be closer toone side than 0,5 meter.

In case you mount two Sensors, mount them symmetrically / evenly spaced, abouthalf of the dryers full width between the two Sensors. Example: When Dryer full width= 4meter, distance between Sensors should be 2 meter.

You don’t need tools to mount the Sensor

Actually the Sensor is designed to be best mounted without tools. Look at thepicture below. Lower the screw “2” and unscrew the two screws, called “3” in thepicture, a bit. Insert the Sensor inside the air beam / air member the way showedin the picture, the Sensor should rest in the triangular opening, and the lipunderneath must be inside the Dryer.

Adjust screw “2” until the Sensor is in level horizontally. Tighten the two screws “3”with your fingers, making sure the sensor is pointing straight into the air-beam / air-member. Tighten the screws until the Sensor is well fixed.

Please, do not tighten these screws more than necessary, normally no tool shouldbe necessary.
